    The Bachmann Skarloey Railway models are all actually based off their CGI era versions, unfortunately Peter Sam got the worst mismatching as his model series and RWS design were correctly based on his prototype's Corris/early Talyllyn days, minus the Geisel being permanent.

      Which is odd because I understand the designers went and measured the real life locos for making the cgi models.

    Fantastic review James, and im happy you managed to pick him up! Compared to 10 years ago, its really good to see a better availability of 009 stock!

      Cheers mate, yeah your right this is my third go at OO9 and it’s always been the lack of r-t-r locos that result in me giving up on the scale, now I seem to have more locos than my layout can handle (probably be time to start a new one)

    I don’t know if you answered this, but is it possible to remove the face and get a normal looking Smokebox door?

    • @WesternSignalman
      @WesternSignalman  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the face is a separate moulding held with the moulded pegs. I assume from your user name your in U.S so I don’t know if you can get hold of one but there is a company that do a 3d printed body replacement in the various guises of Corris No.4/ Edward Thomas.

    Honestly . To convert this thing just get the fourdees 009 tattoo bodyshells . They make both talylln no4 Edwardthomas and corris7 to both paint up and place on the chassis
    And Edward Thomas can come with his rounded funnel or geezel funnel
    Yeah 3 models but depending the era and railway modelled . It will fit on the chassis

      Thanks but this video is now 2 years old and was created on the release of the loco, at the time no kit was available. I have since built one of these kits th-cam.com/video/-VMJ_MwXUYY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=bEKBX2FGhk9qew3i

      Honestly I may just end up keeping PeterSam as is … I enjoy the old tv show from season 4 tho enjoy the cgi animated accurate funnel
      I however don’t like that big block under the saddle there . Honestly I may just paint that part black and then re paint the gold pipes . Then it will HOPEFULLY Look better .
      Anyways I need to stop typing before my thumbs drop off . Bye

    The trouble with all these “TV accurate” models is that the models in the TV series all look hideous. They are virtually an insult to the work of pioneers like Derek Meddings on Thunderbirds. They all look like crude toys.
    I find it particularly strange to base models on the TV series rather than the books or the real prototype when those alternatives are available.

    • @WesternSignalman
      @WesternSignalman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It does seem odd, particularly when Hornby went down that path with the likes of Henry who they used a black 5 moulding, I assume that it was part of Mattel’s requirement as I believe it was them who requested Bachmann make the narrow gauge models.
      I think the original models back in 1984 where based on the Dalby illustrations which the reverend awadry was never happy with, the narrow gauge models where originally o gauge and I assume Peter Sam ended up with that slab side to hide all the various electronics for the motor and moving eyes. I agree it’s a shame they didn’t use real basis, particularly as I understand when they went CGI they real life locos where measured up for the designs.

    Have you heard that Bachmann will release Talyllyn? Now, people don't have to convert Skarloeys as much.

    • @WesternSignalman
      @WesternSignalman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes my someone told me the other day my skarloey is breathing a shy of relief

  • @anthonyfisher-7090
    @anthonyfisher-7090 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I believe in terms of the back hatch. Back when the CGI era of Thomas dove into the narrow gauge engines a number of changes were given to each engine. I.e. skarloey's back number plate, Rheneas' hand rail on top of the boiler and Peter Sam's back was given the doors rather then the circle.
    Also that ending shot is beautiful.

    • @WesternSignalman
      @WesternSignalman  ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting, I believe the designers went to the Tayllyn to photo the engines for the designs when they moved to cgi

    When built Corris No4 aka Peter Sam only had cab access on the drivers side and the fireman's side was a plain sheet as in the model. Although the real sheet was flush with the cab side. It's just a mish mash of different era's of the loco but it is supposed to be a toy not a scale model.

    • @WesternSignalman
      @WesternSignalman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very true, the corris railway had all the platforms on the same side of the line so access was only needed on one side and this why the fireman’s side was not open. I’m not sure when after joining the TR this was opened up. Interestingly if you look at the illustrations in duke the lost engine you can see that the idea was used for the mid sodor railway.

    7:20 I have to disagree on it being a big ask for Bachmann; the Baldwin 10-12-D (which I love to bits) actually does have realistic daylight under the boiler. I'm yet to take mine apart, so I'm not entirely sure how the motor/drivetrain actually fits, but it definitely can be done.

    • @WesternSignalman
      @WesternSignalman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is very true. I’m going to do the same and see what’s underneath at some point but if the chassis is similar to Rheneas then I suspect the motor is going to be right where the daylight should be.

    • @pikablob
      @pikablob 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WesternSignalman Yeah! It's at 3:20 in the Bachmann Trains mid-year product announcments video (not sure if I can link in TH-cam comments? I've had issues with it deleting my comments before) - so far they've only announced Talyllyn and from the illustrations it's very clearly using the Skarloey moulds.
      They may be planning to announce them in the winter announcements over here, because they're apparently due 2023 - or it might be a licencing thing (I think that's why they previously said they couldn't do this? Because Mattel licenced the whole tooling suite - maybe there's still some issues with that in the UK)?
      Either way, I'm excited personally and I do hope we get them over here eventually :))

    I´m a little late to this, but I just wanted to share my 2 cents. As much as I really like these bachmann models for conversion, the running gear feels to plastic-y for my liking. Personaly my go-2 loco for conversion would be the old Minitrix T3, which was made entirely out of metal (which is why so many are still around today), including the running gear. You can get them for cheap at train shows, atleast here in the Netherlands.

    • @WesternSignalman
      @WesternSignalman  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I upgraded this loco last month with a fourdees kit but I agree the running gear is much to be desired especially when compared to the real thing. I may look at Improving It in the future depending how brave I feel. I’ll have to look for a minitrix T3 I wasn’t really aware of the model.

    Overall a good model (I don’t have one of my own), but it looks fairly decent. There is one part of the wheels they didn’t get right, that being the “L” shaped rods attached to the back driving wheels, but it’s kinda small, so i can understand why they didn’t model it.

    • @WesternSignalman
      @WesternSignalman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I think it’s that fine line between tv character and serious model.

  • @Steve-tq6yc
    @Steve-tq6yc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I’d be willing to bet I’m wrong but The chassis is geared with powered wheels at both ends because there was a lack of power on the other steam locos with them only having one powered wheel so they’ve done both.

    • @WesternSignalman
      @WesternSignalman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think your right, but I’ve never had any running issues with Skarloey or Rheneas, Rheneas is a particularly good runner too.

    • @RailwayFalcon
      @RailwayFalcon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The middle wheels are powered - through the rods as per the real thing - but it is actually due to a lack of power from one driven axle. An 0-4-2 with all wheels on a fixed frame will lift the centre set when it encounters a change in gradient, which halves it's pulling power right as it's trying to climb a hill - something Skarloey will demonstrate. All wheel drive ensures that the locomotive has sufficient power regardless of which wheels are in contact with the rails.

    • @WesternSignalman
      @WesternSignalman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RailwayFalcon I haven’t got any gradients so never experienced that but certainly would be interesting to experiment and see how the two locos compare

    it'd be nice to see it with the body shell off as it looks like it could be a very useful donor chassis, there's lots of 0-4-2s out there
