This man changed the horse world and made it so much better for a lot of horses and horse people. And he did it without a big social media platform.

Tom Dorrance, the man who taught Ray Hunt who then passed Tom's knowledge onto Buck Brannaman. I enjoy hearing from these guys
A very nice man. He was really kind to me when I knew basically nothing. He really had no ego.
Years ago I read an incredible book by this amazing horseman. I was a young man trying to become a better horseman even though I was a full time wild land firefighter and his words opened my mind about how to handle our horses. I still can hear Toms written words in my head about what I was doing wrong when I handled our hoses with a heavy hand.
Tom Dorrance is a legend.
Just last month, August 2020, I was assigned to fight the River Fire in the mountains above Salinas CA with my strike team of dozers. We did the best we could trying to catch the rapidly moving fire whilst it was small, but the weather, the wind and the lack of available fire personnel made catching it extremely difficult, there were many other large fires in the state and the River fire grew to almost 50k acres by the time we could catch it. We fought the fire on many ranch properties during those couple of weeks, and the name of the “Dorrance” ranch didn’t stand out in my mind at the time for what ever reason.
I worked with several Dorrance family members during the time we fought the fire on their ranch and I never once felt unappreciated, even when we were failing miserably. Fighting wildfires can be frustrating when things don’t go as planned.
Mother Nature does not agree to follow man made plans.
The Dorrance family are salt of the earth people. I will always remember those hectic days and nights we spent trying to stop Mother Nature from taking what she wanted from the hills around Mt Toro.

The Ranch you speak of, was The Family of Bill Dorrance, Toms Brother and a notable horseman and rawhide braider.
I was fortunate to live not far from the Dorrance Ranch in Caiif...l got lucky when needing to start a colt , being introduced to a trainer named Ray Berta who had grown up with the Dorrance Brothers as neighbors on working cattle Ranches .... this was my first introduction into the deep wealth of knowledge of Classical American Horsemanship , from those who lived or were taught by those who had lived the experience of the last vears of the true American Horse dominated West. ..knowing them , warching them , listening to what they had to say , changed my life long love of horse's into something far closer to my childhood Dream......Galloping down a beautiful Beach , no saddle , no bridle only blue sky ,meetin blue water
And the oneness ... between my Horse and l .

One of the last of the old time horsemen. There were many great horsemen from his era, they spent days and weeks at a time with their horses, they understood them like best friends. Now we have busy lives and schedules and only spare a few hours with a horse and cant understand why things don't work. These guys like Ray Hunt and Tom Dorrance understood. I tried to obtain every ounce of horse sense and experience from my grandfather (another old school cowboy) but feel I only got about 10% of the great wealth he knew. I miss these old guys and their experience. If you happen to know one, talk them up and listen now....they are leaving us fast.
MrAzrancher I agree with you! I'm blessed from having a grandfather who was born in 1905! I wish I had video taped him teaching ME!

Yeah that it. Greatest comment on how to train and be with a horse ever. Ever. This has got to be it. It has to be alive. Am overwhelmed. No one has ever come that close. That's perfection. Have read and listened and studied and everything- holy grail style and hands down that's the best teaching ever. Ever.

John, between 2:20 and 3:20 I think he's talking about feeling for young horses? And when is the appropriate time to help them go a little and then waiting a stride before you ask again. Is that right? Some words were hard to hear and I feel I missed something pretty important there. I've watched it about 5 times and can't quite absorb all the words.

Tom passed a little over a year ago and he is missed by a lot of horse trainers.

I'm sure he's missed by a lot of horse trainers as he did so much to improve the training of horses for people...I've gone thru 23 training teachers and found Parelli the best of all of them. They all have different methods...
he discribed feel timing and balance perfectly..he nailed it.. what a kind man with no hidden agenda for horses..
His voice is so frail that subtitles would have been nice.
