For example, in the Kongu region has a lot of Goundar settlement, so Goundar traditions will have a heavy influence; like you said popular local deities among Goundars would be Chellandiamman, Ponnar & Shankar, Idumban, etc. Similarly, the type of music like motamelam, thudumbattam and such are mainly found in this region (and also Thrissur/Palakkad areas of Kerala, which were once part of Kongu desam). Like you said about Northern Tamil Nadu, deities like Angaalamman, Pavadarayan, Muniyandi and Ayyanar are popular there, but you won’t really find temples dedicated to them in south districts. Similarly, music like tappatai, pambai & udukkai along with thavil & nadaswaram kacheri are associated with the deities within the north TN region. I think with communities like Chettiar, Reddiar, Mudaliar and such settled in these areas, you will have traditions stemming from their communities. South region (Nellai, Thenkasi, Thoothukudi & Kanyakumari) has almost a very different culture compared to the rest of TN. South region you have a lot of Nadar, Thevar and even Viswakarmar settlement. Their clan deities are sudalai madan, esakkiamman, mutharamman, bhattavarayan, brahmasaktiamman, pechiamman, sangili bhoothathar, etc. Ironically, music like Naiyandi melam (without urumi), villu pattu and magudam kacheri (kaniyaan koothu) are strictly from these areas. Not only that, festivals are referred to as “kodai”, instead of “thiruvizha” like the rest of TN. Central south districts like Theni, Madurai, Dindigul and such have lots of Thevar and Nayakkar settlement. So deities within this region are popularly karuppasamy/sangili karuppan, Madurai veeran, mariamman, etc. Music associated with it would be naiyandi melam (with urumi) as well as urumi melam (deva thuthubi according to Nayakkars) and thappu melam (tappatai). Ironically enough, many of these deities have some sort of Kerala connection: Ayyanar, Karuppasamy, Bhattavarayan (muthupattan), Pavadarayan, Sudalai Madan, Esakkiamman, etc. Even places like “Kodungallur” and “Chottanikkarai” are mentioned in mariamman paadals. Many of the mainstream Hindus of Kerala come from the Ezhavar, Nadar, Pulayar, Paraiyar, Irular, Kurumbar and Cholanaicker backgrounds, so they follow these deities. In Kerala, mariamman is known as “mutharamman”.
