Tales from the Vault: Life of an Extraordinary Apache Basket

The Illinois State Museum recently accepted a generous donation of an exceptional antique olla-style basket created by an Apache weaver. The basket was made in Arizona or New Mexico around the turn of the 20th century, came to the family of the donor in the 1920s, and has been in Illinois ever since. It is remarkable not only because of its size, but also the diversity of forms woven throughout which illustrate important parts of Apache life. Join Curator of Anthropology Dr. Brooke Morgan as we learn about how this basket was made and used, how it came to the ISM, and how the ISM cares for this type of object as part of its anthropology collection.
"Tales from the Vault" is a collaborative program hosted by the Illinois State Museum and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum that allows the public to discover some of the treasures from these institutions' collections.
