The way you create videos remind me of the way that journalists are supposed to write articles. I hope you stick to this way of making your videos :)
tell y'all a silly story when i first started off on how to learn how to DJ with my friend on the first week, we didnt know how to mix in and out and everything. We used a computer DJ software. then somehow I decided OK lets use song A's buildup but swap it with song B's drop coz I determined A's drop was a bit meh. As a total newbie the biggest question I had in mind how to make sure both songs sounds smooth together and come at the right timing? I didnt know how to set cue points and everything- all i know is press play and click on the track. I devised a very clever trick. I listened to both songs and wrote down the timing for song A on the point where I wanted it to end. and wrote down the timing for song B on the point where the drop will happen. I gave both songs a 10 secs leeway/ window and as an indicator when I should start playing. So I mark Song A as minute 1:00 Song B marked on minute 1:00, actual drop on 1:10 As soon song A reached 1:00, i played song B which I preset on 1:00 and silenced song A on 1:05. It worked pretty well. The entire process took me like 5 hours to figure out. Fast forward right now.... I wished I knew about and watch the part @2:00 onwards. That would saved myself a lot of sleepless nights hahahahahhaa
This is my favorite part about DJing. I can’t even call myself a DJ, I just have a love for house music and want to share it. I really know nothing about DJing or music theory for that matter. I can’t recognize keys or dissect music on a scholastic level but I’ve always felt it was an innate ability of mine. I can’t tell you that a note was a,b,c,d ect but I often find myself guessing melodies that I’ve never heard correctly just based off of what I think sounds correct. Now that I’m actually getting into DJing I know that my strengths come from putting together beautiful mixes of diverse house without it sounding like it’s all over the place going from bass house to something more classic or disco. I watched a ton of your videos before I ever took the plunge, Carlo. You’ve been an incredible asset to my growth as a DJ hopeful. I’ve been putting together mixes for a few months now and plan to purchase a controller very soon! I would have been lost without your help and I plan on picking up the DDJ 400.
Knowing music structure and more specifically knowing the structure of the music you are playing is key to consistency. You could hand me 20 songs I've never heard before and I bet I can pull off near perfect mixes just because I know structure. Great video, as always.
DJiMMa you can only see the breakdown on very few songs and it's still really hard to see with the light plus a lot of old songs barely had a breakdown of predictable structure...
Hidalgo House i started with vinyl too, the trick is to count, if you know beats, bars and phrases, just count along, 16,32,64...etc If you do this for a while, you wil soon start to develop a feeling, and you will know when to mix, without counting..
I'm old school. This looks just to easy . It not roar skill . Its runs true you press sync . What skill is that . Love to see these next generation dj on vinyl and how shit they are

It is essential to know your music. I listened to every track I purchased. I practice my sets before I either play out or on my radio show. Since I play House music, I had longer blends with slow transitions. A right track is not to be rush unless you are running out of tune.
WOW this is GOLD xD MASTER, its really true as DJ'S some of us neglect or some of us like me who don't even know the basics that is knowing your song, this is often forgotten and neglected....by DJ'S the very basic know the feel of each tracks like a book..thanks again MASTER i really really found this very helpful its really awesome....and also knowing the feel of each tracks and how they can make the crowd feel is gonna make a whole lot of difference..this is the reason why many small DJ'S fail..and the crowd tends to loose attention very quickly...WOW thanks again master i better keep this in mind its very basic but yet very very important..
I always ignored this video thinking that title was click baity. But thank God I took the leap of faith and watched. I have watched easily 40-50 of your videos and this is probably the most valuable one. I struggle with this and always feel embarrassed about it. But now that you have explained this. I ll give it a shot. Do share if you think looping small intros until they complete the number of beats of sounds like a good idea? Because the number of beats the drop lasts for the first track could be a problem.
Most of the time I mix intro of 2nd track with chorus(or outro) is of 1st track but when I am playing my favorite EDM I prefer mixing with build up and chorus of 2nd track right after the end of chorus of 1st track just to keep the energy level high..I hope to get lesson of messing with build up and the bar before the drop to make a jump start in upcoming days and thanks for the video man!!love it🍺🍺
You make great videos! The graphics are fantastic and help explain the concepts. I didn't realize you can set your beat jump to 32! I'm using this tip for sure.
There's a faster way to counting beats: See how 1 of every 4 vertical grid lines in the waveform is bright white instead of grey (see 3:04 for example)? That's called the downbeat (or beat 1) of the measure or bar of which there are 4 beats total when in 4/4. By doing simple math you'll find that there's 16 measures in a 64 beat section. Why count by inches when you can count by feet?! You can even count by cadences too, which are the sections within the sections that repeat rhythmically, melodically or both and they're usually 2 to 4 measures in length (from what I hear these 2 songs consist of 2 measure cadences, so 8 cadences to a section). Hope that helps some of you and thanks DJ Carlo Atendido for making the art of DJing so accessible for people!
I admire this guys videos..and if mr guy you happen to be reading this comment then a personal thank you also.. The point I want to make tho..is I’ve been playing to crowds in bars and venues all over the uk and the music I play is rnb, reggae and hip hop.. I can’t really mix that well because I’ve never really bothered to learn, I just use my old school judgment and experience to guess what will go with what ect ect..yes I use my headphones to get a peek at how it’s going to sound before I play it out to the main speakers, but that is just about it.. I’ve always had good feedback while and after I’ve finished my set.. I use good equipment to, I own a pioneer ddj sx2 and the new ddj sx3 ( controllers I know ) but I don’t think nowadays you need much more than that, I also own 2 rcf 8003 mk2 subs, 2 rcf nx32a, 2 rcf 715a mk 4, 2 rcf 712 mk4 plus good lightning systems ect all that equipment makes my sound even better for crowd entertainment.

My preferred genres are very difficult to mix properly if you don't understand song structure or KNOW YOUR MUSIC because tempos and energy vary GREATLY. Keep up the great vids bruh and I will keep giving them that sought after "thumbs up" ! :-D
I set my cue points based on this method. The top layer is my cue points that I use to mix in 16 bars before the phrase and the bottom layer is where I set points on the beat just in case I miss a mix point.
Hey Carlo, I am interested to see what you could teach by just using a basic classic set up of two simple analogue decks and a simple analogue mixer. Awesome video, and an important one for beginners. I'm lucky as I already played piano before I started DJing, so it was really easy for me to pick up on the phrases and structure of a track! Props to you, Carlo, for making this vid! hopefully, DJs learn that the start of a drop is NOT when you should start mixing an intro in as my friend has done on many occasions >.

I'm not really a fan of mixing chorus-to-chorus, as choruses are pretty saturated and vocals might be getting in the way. Instead, I propose the following: First you mix intros with outros, each of them lasts about a minute (depending on genre and BPM). Set yourself a goal to make a 1h flawless mix with all tracks cleanly mixed intro-with-outro. This skill will save you from ever having to set up an emergency loop. Then you can mix intro-with-chorus2, hotcueing from intro into breakdown2. Choose some tracks with super hard drops and make it into another flawless 1h mix. Then you can mix intros with breakdown halfway through, building up for the new track. Now you can have some really cool double breakdowns! Make another 1h mix just doing these transitions. Once you can put an intro into any part of a track, you can bend your set time however you wish - you can go full length, or you can double-time it, or build up energy through introing into breakdowns. The most important part of all this is to actually have fun dropping some juicy beats.
Good video , you do it easy for understand you , i only speak inglish a few but i understand you with the images and test , congratulations from Sevilla - Spain
Thanks that was very useful. What I do not get (maybe a silly question) is, how to set the cue point. If I decide to set the cue point 64 bars before the breakdown and the intro of the next song only has 32 bars before the breakdown it does not work. OK. I could start counting if i know how long the intro is but do you memorize all of that?

Nice tutorial. My question is can you do this while live mixing (counting beats and setting cue points) or do you always need to prepare cue points in advance before mixing ?
Hi, thank you for your teaching. I want to buy --> GET ACCESS TO THESE TRACKS & MY SECRET TUTORIALS & MORE! But I have a question please. If I buy it, can I use the track on TH-cam for a mix live ? (Sorry for my English because I'm french)
@DJ Carlo Atendido. Can you make a video tutorial on what's the proper way of beat counting on house, funky beats, hip-hop rnb etc. And explain to us what's a second beater, third beater or fourth beater. Thank you.
Another nice helpful video, thanks a lot ;) What would you think about another #askdjcarlo ? I'm really interessted in some questions like: how did you earn money before being a DJ to buy all that equipment , like turntables... Or what was your "second Plan" if being a DJ would fail ?
Hey i know this is like super relevant but i just want to point out there are times when you might want to mix in together longer and have different parts playing. You know maybe the tracks ends with some vocal chops and you might want to keep that to add flair to your tracks. Instead of lets say mixing 8 bars of intro from the beginning of the chorus you might mix after 4 bars so you can get the last 4 bar buildup with some leftover sounds from the previous track.
Carlo can you please do a tutorial on finding the best opening track. I find this to be a pretty difficult task. Do I open with a banger or slowly build? So many questions
Oh, this won't fit into a tutorial. Essentially, it's different per venue, but rule of thumb is to keep it light on the bangers, or to not play them at all during an opening set! If ever you do, maybe only towards the very end (and it can't even be a massive track). As to finding them, it's up to your style and taste bud. Lots to unload there!
@@djcarlo Fair enough and so on point regarding venues and opening sets. Your videos give me so much technical knowledge and I really appreciate the added bonus of sending me out there with a better understanding of aesthetics (and dj...consideration)

Being an old school dj from the 80's, imagine trying to learn song structure on vinyl. You had to really know the music you were playing.
Same here. You had to listen to everything and remember where your breaks were. Since we didn't know any better, we rocked it the hard way.
You can read the vinyl though you can see the structure in the grooves. Hence the fucking light on a turntable so you can see this in a club

I'm not really a fan of mixing chorus-to-chorus, as choruses are pretty saturated and vocals might be getting in the way. Instead, I propose the following:
First you mix intros with outros, each of them lasts about a minute (depending on genre and BPM).

What would you think about another #askdjcarlo ? I'm really interessted in some questions like: how did you earn money before being a DJ to buy all that equipment , like turntables... Or what was your "second Plan" if being a DJ would fail ?
Very usefull video. Thumbs UP!
Very helpful. Thanks much!!!
Hey carlo what dj pool is the best to find new reggae songs I’ve used two different ones but I can’t find alot of the songs I’m looking for.
Excellent video...really helpful👌👌
Hey i know this is like super relevant but i just want to point out there are times when you might want to mix in together longer and have different parts playing. You know maybe the tracks ends with some vocal chops and you might want to keep that to add flair to your tracks. Instead of lets say mixing 8 bars of intro from the beginning of the chorus you might mix after 4 bars so you can get the last 4 bar buildup with some leftover sounds from the previous track.
Great vid again 👍
Carlo can you please do a tutorial on finding the best opening track. I find this to be a pretty difficult task. Do I open with a banger or slowly build? So many questions
Oh, this won't fit into a tutorial. Essentially, it's different per venue, but rule of thumb is to keep it light on the bangers, or to not play them at all during an opening set! If ever you do, maybe only towards the very end (and it can't even be a massive track). As to finding them, it's up to your style and taste bud. Lots to unload there!
@@djcarlo Fair enough and so on point regarding venues and opening sets. Your videos give me so much technical knowledge and I really appreciate the added bonus of sending me out there with a better understanding of aesthetics (and dj...consideration)
definitely donating! you put a lot of time and effort into these tutorials! i highly am thankful
Great video many thanks for sharing the knowledge 👌🏻
another perfect mix!
