This song reminds me of my teenage years in the mid 90s when living in Cambridg-MA. Gosh, it´s so nostalgic it hurts my soul so deeply. Feels like a whole lifetime ago! I also relate to the lyrics so much, ´cause I´m a real outdoor type.
Wow! So after years of listing the Lemonheads version of this song in my Top 10 favourites of all time I find out it’s a cover. I will always love Evan’s version but I’m growing to love this too. A beautiful song ❤️
One of the most under-rated and little known bands of the day - true genius! One of many Australian bands of the late 80's/early 90's that should have been huge!
darren lunan iIknow im like super late, but could you recommend me some other australian bands. Discovered this band on accident while looking for a band name and really enjoy their music

My absolute fave line too. When I play it live, I always chill out the guitar and slow it down to really give it some impact. Such a great feeling when people listen to it, and get a chuckle... often an ironic chuckle as for many in the crowd it would be a bit too close to home :)
i always think of an ex that would flip out if she didn’t watch the Saturday night Scifi channel line up both times (they always aired everything twice back then). A wise man who created many amazing and beautiful things wrote on a sign, “ I did all of this while you were watching television” (sic)
Great to finally hear the original. These guys remind me of the Hoodoo Gurus. Love the Aussie sound. So many amazing bands & artists from there. A shame so many (from anywhere actually) don't get the recognition or exposure they deserve to make it big. But I guess there are plenty that are happy to just the make music - & that's enough. Kudos to them.
good times, we had wonderful songs that were actually covers, which meant a chance to know more great bands we wouldn´t know otherwise. so nice that many bands that hit the charts were so generous.
I guess they had no chances to become huge. The music is subtle and touching and such material is not for everyone. What they have managed to do is to touch the hearts of these few who understand and appreciate this kind of art.
This is one song I'll play and sing and think of how funny it is because I do all the things in the song fairly frequently, except the fighting. But I would.
Morgan also wrote 'into your arms' originally recorded it before the lemonheads too... Which was like, their biggest song beside mrs robinson.lol so to agree with whoever commented here, YES, THEY do do that way too much... But the songs are great and we remember them so who are we to complain really?
I knew the cover, but never knew this was an Australian song (or maybe I remember if from way back when). I think that’s The Bluff in North West Australia is the surging bit ?
How was this song not a bigger hit. Absolute classic.
I thought the Lemonheads’ cover would fix that, but you gotta remember what the landscape looked like in that part of 1997

I'm feeling that nostalgia pain yet again, fuck me it's so mistifying
One song that's more poignant is Becks 'Loser' 😊
The Outdoor Type, great Aussie lyrical genius by Smudge.

Tom Morgan (guy who wrote this) and Dando are buds and one of Toms bandmates Nic Dalton was the bassist of The Lemonheads for a bit
This is my favourite Smudge song. I always sing along.

Clouds, Falling Joys to name a few. V Spy V Spy were massive in Brazil and should have been huge here, incredible live shows and songwriting.
I am blown away. I never knew lemonhead was a cover. I love this song soo much. It sums up my (obviously bad) relationships
Awesome. I heard the Lemonheads version first and didn't even realize it was a cover. I love both versions.
me too...
Alison the Smudge drummer use to go out with Nic Dalton formerly from the Plunderers then went onto play bass with Evan Dando of the Lemonheads
the lemonheads do that way to much.

Woah! After so many years of absolutely loving this song, this comes as news to me!! I'm in shock, and in love!
If they don’t play this at my funeral, I’m not going…. :).
I’m painting this songwriters house at the moment.
sounds like he may have lied about being the handy type too
“What if something is on tv and it’s never shown again” that line kills me.
Kids today wouldn't understand the concept

Was true back then and I kinda liked it, now everything is 24/7!!!
real music.... best composing ... i was in australia at this time when this was in the air!!!!!!!!
Lemonheads put some Gram Parsons in their version. To my hearing anyway. Love the original. Love the cover. Both are special in their own way

Dam, where has this song been all my life, Such a great song
Beautiful.
I seemed to remember seeing them at the First Big Day Out. My memory is hazy but I think they were one of the first bands to play.
It's the lost art of the cheap Super 8 video I miss. Time capsules with theme music.
good times, we had wonderful songs that were actually covers, which meant a chance to know more great bands we wouldn´t know otherwise. so nice that many bands that hit the charts were so generous.
Very beautiful track !!
correct! how did we miss these guys? btw, sir, are you that john peel?!
Great song! Love both the original by Smudge, and the brilliant Lemonheads' version!
Always had a roof above me
Always paid the rent.
I never set foot inside a tent.
Couldn't build a fire to save my life
I lied about being the outdoor type
I never slept out underneath the stars
The closest that i come to that was one time my car,
Broke down for an hour in the suburbs at night
I lied about being the outdoor type
To scared to let you know
I knew what you've been looking for
I lied until I fit the bill
God bless the great indoors
I lied about being the outdoor type,
I've never owned a sleeping bag let alone a mountain
Bike.
I can't go away with you on a rock climbing weekend
What if something's on TV and its never shown again
It's just as well I'm not invited I'm afraid of heights
I lied about being the outdoor type
Finish
Never learned to swim can't grow a beard or even fight
I lied about being the outdoor type.

Thus answering the question no one was asking, "I wonder what the clearly audible lyrics to this song are?"
If you can listen to this song and not wish you had written it....
somethings wrong.
listen to it again or something. Awesome vid too
So well said. It's so simple but so believable and relatable. The melodic sensibility in this song is incredible
It’s too good.

Sublime ❤
Never realize that's the Lemonheads version was a cover 😮
So I just found out one of my fave Frank Turner songs isn’t his song 🫣🤯 this is a lovely original
So much nostalgie at the same time...
It's all about the second verse ... like a lot of Tommy's songs ...
Hahaha. Thank you. I thought Lemonhead's original.
Classic Australian song...why isn't Tom Morgan better known?
great song
God I wish they'd come to the Uk for one final gig

Essa banda me traz muita recordaçao de Lemonheads e Vaseline,em algumas cançoes tem uma mistura de Sonic Youth e Nirvana muito boa essa banda

Robyn St Clare wrote 'Into Your Arms'.

nice, thought it was lemonheads track. both great
Waiting for the great leap forwards by billy bragg
yes they can all sound the same ........wer did billy get it from...?.....
Fair call. Thanks for posting. Interesting to listen to both songs. Noel Gallagher borrowed heavily, even the mighty Sabbath borrowed riffs (Vanusa).
@@MrSuicidal69 yeah - I suspect it’s just coincidence rather than them deliberately ripping it off. There’s only so many chords....
@@fastfrankblack Still a brilliant song. I revisit it often.

Beautiful? No, sublime
Wow! Very used to the Lemonheads version but something about this one is a little more haunting... not nearly a poppy.
What the fuck this is so genius fuck
