They weren't worried about running out of fuel. They were worried about busting the minimum diversion fuel requirements, because then they'd get in trouble. It's not nearly as close a call as you think, and these safety margins exist for exact situations like this.
10 minutes to play with = how much reserve fuel they have until they hit minimum fuel or their company SOP. Nowhere near unsafe, if it was actually 10min he would have declared an emergency.
This really shows that everyone in a cockpit understands it is an emergency with not a lot of info given to the tower right away. As that one pilot said, 'we'll get out of your hair' - they want to make sure attention is on those needing help. It is sad that the end result was no survivors.

They were not low on fuel, they were low on spare fuel to "play around" with. All flights need to have enough fuel to get to their secondary (backup) location and land there with enough left ever to try landing multiple times. They just didn't have much spare on top of that to wait with the decision to divert to their secondary for longer than ten minutes.
As someone who merely has an interest in these things, and not American I find the female controllers on this channel much easier to understand. The men seem to speak quicker, I realise they have to relay a lot of information in a short time.

Can't imagine knowing a mid air just occurred and having to direct aircraft coming from all arrival paths to hold in stacks at the holding fixes and then coordinate bringing them out of the holds out of the sequence they were placed in. Then add in the complexity of the aircraft needing to leave the hold for a shoet diversion in different directions with all traffic staying at or below 10,000. I'm confident there has never been a simulation drill for this level of complexity. These controllers had to handle it instantly and perfectly even as they fear the possibility that they may be responsible for the 2 aircraft down in the river. usually the instructions from tower about traffic includes the direction of traffic to avoid confusion. Like "traffic at 11 o clock ". this particular phrase is missing in the comm which could have caused the heli to sight the wrong aircraft.

Thanks for all your work Victor. I felt listening to the whole incident and understanding as best I can, would be more informative than listening to a near-octogenarian using this tragedy to complain about his predecessors, ethnic minorities and dwarves.
I don't understand why they can't share information better than this. Tower knew it was a helo-passenger jet collision that crashed into the Potomac the moment it happened and that the airport would be closed indefinitely. Why didn't approach know that immediately as well?
For those not familiar with the Washington area, Dulles (IAD) is 28 miles from Reagan (DCA), and Baltimore (BWI) is 35 miles from DCA. The three are so close that if you use Google Flights and pick one, the other two will automatically show up as options. For passengers, the diversion to Dulles would be slightly more preferable, as the Washington subway (Metro) has stops at both IAD and DCA. Grab your bags, hit the subway back to DCA to pickup your car. Or just take the subway home as many probably arrived that way. Parking at DCA is not the greatest. BWI does have commuter rail (MARC) and Amtrak connections back to DC, and a dedicated bus connecter to the closest Metro station. However, the frequency is lower, and in the case of MARC, they may have trains heading into DC at that time of day. Of course, passenger preference is probably not the highest priority when choosing where to divert to.
So TRACON was unaware for a long time that collision actually happened. Wonder if TWR had supervisor in charge that night to transmit info, or again single-controller operation?
Didn’t the Blackhawk or the crj have acas? And some of these irresponsible reporters are bagging on the pilots of the crj saying that one pilot ONLY had 6 years and the other, 2. Idiots. The articles I read didn’t even mention their FLYING hours. And even so, they are piloting a small regional plane. That’s what younger pilots who are trying to advance their careers do. How many flying hours did the helo pilots have? You must have had a hellava night trying to put these videos together! Get some rest and nice work. I subscribed today. Never saw any of your videos and I live for Mayday. Now I know what I’m doing all weekend. ❤❤❤❤
VAS do you have AI doing the audio transcripts. Excellent videos with a lot of work but just some fine audio remarks get misinterpreted on the visual text. Wrong time to bring it up, I know. The audio is there for us anyway. Thanks for all you do.
@Planefan1000 posted a list of all of those flights. (I tried to copy his comment as a link, but it gave me the link to the video, rather than the specific comment). I think they all went to Dulles except the one that went to Baltimore (3130).
I'm no expert but I'm really wondering who thought it was a good idea to have a Blackhawk training flight in an incredibly busy airspace at night in the middle of winter in DC..
i will ask here too anyone knows if its approved by the faa to issue visual commands at night for separation at a below 500ft? all things considering that tcas doesnt give audible commands below that alt..
Because the pilot doesn't simply stash the plane into his bag and take a taxi home after landing. After diverting, you now have a plane in the wrong place that is scheduled to be cleaned and resupplied, then be boarded by the next crew and the next load of passengers to fly somewhere. In addition, you have a bunch of passengers running around in a place they didn't pay you to bring them to. Spending a couple thousand bucks on fuel and wages to circle for a while in order to land at the correct airport is worth it for the airline. (Just imagine you commuting to work, there being some issue on the way---would you divert to the nearest Walmart parking lot instead? Or rather wait a while in the hope of getting to work anyway?) That's why ATC cannot expect planes to divert the second there's a delay. And that's also partially why they ask the planes how long they can stay up in the air. The other part is about getting them to their new destination in an order that doesn't mean the last one drops out of the sky because they ran out of fuel.
I believe that he 'flares' he saw were the flames from the two aircraft colliding. He was on final for runway 01 at DCA and was probably the closest airborne aircraft to the collision.
Ye know I actually don't want to listen to it so I'm just going to leave a message to all impacted by this tragedy. My sincere condolences and while that's of little comfort to people I truly mean it.
Interesting that AA472 and AA3130 were still hoping for DCA even after they saw the jet ahead of them explode on final approach! AA472: "Oh, they just went" AA3130: "Tower did you see that?"
It seems like there was a lot of confusion early on, a lot of people seemed to think that there was only the helicopter involved, and they would not have been aware that they crashed into the river, so the airport could theoretically have been reopened if the SAR response was not required.
Why would DCA V say i dont know what's going on at the airport? Is this not an air traffic control person? Seems like he is a little off or slow on what's going on. ???
This is all a distraction from the fact that the head of the FAA got sacked because Elon was upset that SpaceX was previously fined by the FAA for not having the proper licenses.
One of the first things that needs to be addressed is that staticky ass radio. That’s the clearest communication they can come up with for a system that’s lives depend on???
The recordings are made from receiving stations on the ground, in the air it is usually clearer. The normal issue is with ATC talking so fast and blurred that you can't understand them, but these guys aren't too bad.
No one in charge. Controllers asking planes where they want to divert instead of controlling the airspace. Surprised there was no other mishap. What a CF.
Controllers don't dictate to pilots what their new destinations are. Pilots tell controllers where they want to go (likely after communicating with their company dispatchers), after which controllers tell the pilots what altitude/heading/speed to use to get them there safely. "No one in charge?" Hardly. Everyone was still in charge of his own area of responsibility; and it sounds like they did a good job performing it, too.
Amidst all sadness and tragedy, there are still more planes with pilots up there that need to continue flying safely. It’s comforting to hear these professionals working through a crisis in such a calm and matter of fact way.
I saw people say “they don’t even care what happened. They just keep chilling” 🙄
@
Those people are called morons.
usually the instructions from tower about traffic includes the direction of traffic to avoid confusion. Like "traffic at 11 o clock ".
this particular phrase is missing in the comm which could have caused the heli to sight the wrong aircraft.
I'd bet some of those CRJ7 aircraft coming in behind 5342, might've known the crew, 72 CRJ7 in the fleet, most DCA based (maybe).
Thanks for sharing these fantastics visuals with Jaun Brown Blanchlirio ! You guys are at the top of the global coverage providing the clearest explenation of this tragedy.
Didn't hear any DEI hires behind yoke on this clip. Great to hear professionals working the contingency
The woman from ATC stsys very calm and composed. Clear instructions.
It will be really interesting to see the FAA investigation report when it comes out.

Thanks for all your work Victor.
I felt listening to the whole incident and understanding as best I can, would be more informative than listening to a near-octogenarian using this tragedy to complain about his predecessors, ethnic minorities and dwarves.
Amen yo
Many pilots upset. You can tell by their voice.
Thanks so much. So much better than the mass media.
You do great work, Victor. Any chance you're working on IAD arrivals for the same time frame?
Affirm
Apparently a similar incident happened the day before this to Republic Airways Flight 4514. Can you get that audio?
A terrible accident. At three minutes into the audio, things became confusing for everyone, as there was a ton of traffic as said.
Understood 🙏🏻👍❤️
TCAS doesn't give conflict resolutions that low as they could send one of the aircraft crashing into the ground.
VAS do you have AI doing the audio transcripts. Excellent videos with a lot of work but just some fine audio remarks get misinterpreted on the visual text.
Wrong time to bring it up, I know. The audio is there for us anyway. Thanks for all you do.

What happened to those 3 planes from the first 2 videos that were going to land directly behind the plane that crashed & we’re told to circle around?
@Planefan1000 posted a list of all of those flights. (I tried to copy his comment as a link, but it gave me the link to the video, rather than the specific comment). I think they all went to Dulles except the one that went to Baltimore (3130).
Crazy how long it took them to get info about the collision
Robin Lee Wascher caused 34 deaths, yet was never charged.
Did any other planes get to land immediately after the crash? Or were they immediately forced to go around?
In Victor's first video, it appeared all other flights were immediately told to go around.
The airport was immediately closed
all immediate go arounds
I'm no expert but I'm really wondering who thought it was a good idea to have a Blackhawk training flight in an incredibly busy airspace at night in the middle of winter in DC..
Same here. Seems like something they could do at 2am, when the commercial traffic dies down.
The same one who chose to have two separate frequencies for the same Civil Airspace.
the military is full of uneducated folks for a reason. DEI by the 1st trump admin got us this.
Did anyone monitor Dulles ATC?
i will ask here too
anyone knows if its approved by the faa to issue visual commands at night for separation at a below 500ft? all things considering that tcas doesnt give audible commands below that alt..
Why would you hold for an hour with Dulles and bwi so close
Nobody held for an hour
Or rather wait a while in the hope of getting to work anyway?)
That's why ATC cannot expect planes to divert the second there's a delay. And that's also partially why they ask the planes how long they can stay up in the air. The other part is about getting them to their new destination in an order that doesn't mean the last one drops out of the sky because they ran out of fuel.
🙏🙏🙏🙏
What's up with the flares?
I believe that he 'flares' he saw were the flames from the two aircraft colliding. He was on final for runway 01 at DCA and was probably the closest airborne aircraft to the collision.
@@danwiggins2972 He was probably the plane the helo was trying to avoid, as he was the next arrival.

Did anyone divert to BWI?
Should have made a lutz jump manoeuvre at the end there to avoid the rotors
Interesting that AA472 and AA3130 were still hoping for DCA even after they saw the jet ahead of them explode on final approach!
AA472: "Oh, they just went"
AA3130: "Tower did you see that?"
They’re numb to it. Dei cause this on a daily basis
Probably cause they were partly in shock, already set up and had minimal reserves so don’t wanna get stuck in a queue for Dulles or bwi
It seems like there was a lot of confusion early on, a lot of people seemed to think that there was only the helicopter involved, and they would not have been aware that they crashed into the river, so the airport could theoretically have been reopened if the SAR response was not required.
@garyoakham9723
The most stupid I've seen in one comment.

They saw flares....
Does that mean that someone survived the initial crash?! 😭
may have just been trying to light up the water as part of search and rescue efforts.
The flare they thought they saw was actually the fireball that occured when the aircraft collided, sadly
@@susanpetro4325 Likely, on the video, the falling debris looked similar to flares
Plus the strobes from the CRJ kept going till it impacted the water.

ATC did his job fine I feel, I’m no expert though. 100% fault of the helicopter pilot.
That is not what the Swiss cheese model indicates. The helo was the last through hole.
Why would DCA V say i dont know what's going on at the airport? Is this not an air traffic control person? Seems like he is a little off or slow on what's going on. ???
This is audio from TRACON/ARTCC, they are in a windowless room glued to their radar scopes, usually not even in the tower.
The plot thickens once again
This is all a distraction from the fact that the head of the FAA got sacked because Elon was upset that SpaceX was previously fined by the FAA for not having the proper licenses.
This accident was not planned.

@wenerjy YOU said it was a "distraction".
