    StageFright and Michele Saovi are both wildly underrated - thanks for doing this. I think everyone knows about Dellamorte Dellamore at this point, so let me suggest The Church as a followup. Regarding the alternate title, some astrology-types say that the owl is associated with the star sign Aquarius - that is the best correlation I can find for the it.

    • @pandaloon6083
      @pandaloon6083 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know, but I think, that the movie's title is derived from the aquarium scene in the hospital, wherein the nurse is feeding those small fish to the big fish. Wallace, the infamous actor is the big fish; our cast are the small fishes; and the theatre is the aquarium.

    • @zetetick395
      @zetetick395 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pandaloon6083 Yeah, I think the aquarium scene is a visual gag, punning on the original title of the movie (Aquarius)
      - I suppose pretty much the whole film takes place in a theatre, which is kind of an 'actors aquarium'

    3:22 Simon Boswell is definitely a great talent. His music score for Richard Stanley's Dust Devil (1992) is fucking incredible!
    With a script co-written by George "Big Ape" Eastman, and one of the producers being Joe "Porno Holocaust" D'Amato, how could this possibly fail?!?

    Great review and huge thank you for not calling Stage Fright a giallo even once. Some fuckers think any movie from Italy where somewone gets mutilated is a giallo. Huge number of TH-camrs and even some books call Stage Fright a giallo even when the murderer is presented clear as day in the first act. Did those hacks think story like this would be told in those yellow-cover books in the 60's.

    • @horrorfanandy4647
      @horrorfanandy4647 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree, obviously Giallo is quite a broad genre in terms of how you can manipulate the basic structure and tropes, but a general rule of thumb it's a murder mystery where we usually don't know the identity of the killer until the final act, and more often that not, not until the last 5 minutes! Stagefright literally follows the American 80's slasher plot structure in every aspect, except it does it way better! Therefore to call it a Giallo is just stupid, it's an Italian slasher in the same way Absurd is. My mate does that mind you, he's got a fondness for Italian Horror, but he always calls The Beyond his "favourite Giallo" and it takes every fibre of my being to say "It's not a Giallo ffs!" Very irritating! 🤣

    More than 20 years ago I alongside a couple of friends attended an event called "Kettensägenmassaker" (what is german for "chainsaw massacre") in Düsseldorf.
    It was a huge party in an industry complex, where they played horror-themed music like White Zombie, Turbonegro, Misfits etc.
    They also projected horror movies on one giant wall of the hall.
    I was the designated driver that night and after a while got pretty bored being the only sober person in a room full of drunk people.
    So I got a coke, lit a cigarette, sat to a wall and watched this movie from start to finish, mind you without the actual soundtrack, but accompanied by loud metal music.
    I've seen it a couple of times since then and love it dearly, but for this memory alone Aquarius holds a special place in my movielovin' heart.

    Some surprising emotion elicited in the shower scene. Laurel and Main Girl have tension throughout the movie. When the killer picks her up, she looks at Main Girl, who in turn looks back pleadingly. Will Laurel scream, beg for her help, and thereby reveal and endanger Main Girl? A final bitch move on her part? The sympathy we feel for Laurel is countered by the realistic, but somehow cruel, desire for her to remain quiet on for Main Girl's sake. In some respects this harkens back to the earlier kill on the stage: everyone is genuinely concerned for Corinne...until they learn that only Corinne knows where the key is hidden. Sympathy shifts to ugly self-interest in a hurry. Although I'm not a horror fan, I suspect that Stagefright has more layers than most slashers, am more confident that it has more style than most slashers, and am certain that it is a good, entertaining slasher.
