True story, Eli Wallach is one of my favorite actors and I wrote him a letter when I was a teenager, he of course responded with a signed photo and a handwritten letter which I still have to this day.. I will always treasure it
I rode the NYC subway with Eli Wallach about a year before this interview. He was very open and friendly to everyone who spoke to him, and seemed genuinely surprised when younger people recognized him.
I can’t believe he was 51 when he filmed that. That’s my favorite of the trilogy because of him. Volonte was a great bad guy in both dollars movies (he played despicable characters really well), but Tuco had so much depth character-wise and was funny as well. Wallach even improvised one of the best lines in ‘if you have to shoot, shoot, don’t talk!’
I just watched it again probably for the first time in 20+ years a few days ago. after rewatching you really see that its Eli carrying the film more then any one as his character has the most depth and shows the most character in the film
I have so much respect for Mr. Wallach. An iconic actor! the ending of the tg tb n tu, no other can cry/scream and make the ending like Mr. Wallach did. I don't have much good memories of my father yet, I remember how my father and I watched all the spaghetti westerns together... the power of cinematography !
Eli made the movie good bad ugly , also Sergio Leone with his great skills directing . Eye movement , sounds , scenery , just great great acting and directing . Good Bad & ugly is a true Classic hands down . Tuco
11:27 "Can I tell one more?" Are you kidding? I could sit for hours listening to this man tell stories, especially about The Good The Bad and The Ugly.
A rare outing where Dave hadn’t done his homework and spoke of Sergio Leone in the present tense, prompting Eli to gently inform him that the famed Italian director of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly was deceased. (Sergio had passed away the previous year). About 16 years after this Letterman interview, Eli had a memorable supporting role in The Holiday with Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Cameron Diaz and Jack Black. A touching Christmas flick.
"I like big fat men like you. When they fall, they make more noise, and sometimes they never get up." -Tuco (Eli Wallach) -The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
I saw an interview Eli did where he told the story of nearly having his head chopped off during filming of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. It was the scene where he jumped off the train while still handcuffed to his captor. At that point he was supposed to lie beside the track so that the next train would roll over the handcuff chain. Nobody told him about the metal step that was sticking out of the train. It almost got him.
*One of the last of the 'Great Actors' of the past, and you don't realize how important they were to film and the stage until they are gone* *It's odd how many of the 'Best of the Best' grew-up under severe and sometimes horrible circumstances that 'drove them to success' like Kirk Douglas or Glen Campbell* *Campbell once said "The first time I'd ever seen a flush toilet was when I went to Elementary school" which sounds impossible until you realize his family were 'sharecroppers' that lived with no electricity or running-water in what was nothing more than a 'big shack* *"I refused to accept I wasn't 'good enough" and had nothing to lose in trying because I had nothing but myself to rely on and could not accept failure from myself"* *That seems a common denominator from many people in 'show business'*
A great actor, whose fan I was and is and will always remain. In real life a wonderful man, I always had a dream someday hope I meet my favourite star Eli Wallach. The greatest blessing is he married one woman and till his death never separated (1948-2014) given the modern actors and actresses who mint money and then get married ample of times as if a family and marriage is a game. Another actor I remember is Ben Turpin who loved is wife till her death, whom he tried a lot to save and was by her side till she died, being a Catholic he took her to different religious sites praying for a miracle. Such wonderful rich actors are rare to find. I do miss Ben Turpin but above all I miss you, my favourite actor Eli Wallach!
@@helencampbell9203 DEAR HELEN , WE BOTH KNOW HE WAS SO WORTHY OF AN ACADEMY AWARD AS BEST ACTOR IN ""THE GOOD, the BAD, and the UGLY"" BUT SELDOM DO WESTERNS WIN IN TINSEL TOWN.
The movie he was referring to in Israel at the beginning ! Was Bruce Lee's movie "The Silent Flute" aka Circle of Iron but Lee past away while it was still being written ! R.I.P. Eli Wallach ❤🙏
According to IMDB, Leone used the name Bob Robertson for A Fistful of Dollars, which was actually his second directed film. But it's worth noting he had over 30 credits before that as assistant or second unit director, many uncredited. So he had quite a lot of experience behind the camera before Dollars.
That was true for some European prints, but in the American version, he was always "Sergio Leone." And the Italian version had TWO separate credit sequences--one where most everyone is credited under their real names and one like the U.S. version where everyone's under pseudonyms.
My goodness he certainly lied about his age in them films. 27 in his first film? He looked seriously old for that. He even looked older then his actual 41 years. But what a fabulous actor. He also appeared in Batman as mr freeze.
Watch all three films are getting which were released at different times in America. My favorite trelegy The Good the bad the ugly fistful of Dollars and for a few dollars more

He was such a great actor and not full of himself like today's Hollywood actors. Very humble.
Tuco! The most memorable scoundrel ever. He did such an amazing job with that role.
He was legendary as the leader of the gang in magnificent seven to!
Agreed. One of the BEST performances in ANY western ever made.
Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef get more notice of course but for me, Eli was the best, most entertaining part of that film.
I can’t believe he was 51 when he filmed that.

I love that he talks about Circle of Iron. I love that movie.
How come no one ever asked him about working with Clark Gable in his last movie? That's the first time I saw him. And loved his work in the Movie!!

Does Eli Wallach Mention The Toyota Truck Commericals?
Easily answered by actually watching the video.
Hey blondie come back you son of thousands .....
Was he lying about his age or just made a mistake? Wallach wasn't 27 in 1956....that meant he would have been born in 1929. Wallach was born in 1915

"Howling VII" is a bad movie. "Versus" is a bad movie. Godfather III is fine.
