Written for the 1982 Falklands war about a soldier dying, surrounded by his comrades, it is held in high regard by most British veterans and used at many of our funerals. I've got it penned in for mine when the time comes.
I’ve loved this song for so many years but this is the first time I’ve heard it described in this perspective. I think you’ve described it just brilliantly.
20 seconds in and I feel myself welling up. Every time. An immensely emotional, gripping song that tears at your heart even if you dont relate to the story. Masterpiece
Apparently it's about a British soldier who was shot during the Falklands war. His comrades/brothers sat with him and talked with him before his eyes shut. War is cruel.
His Bass player comes closest ,of course he is th only one to have played continuously with Mark since the inception of Mark's musical career ( 45 years +).
@@georgesheffield1580 He has had two regular bass players John illsley with Dire Straits until1977-1995, and since then for his solo work and touring he has mostly used Glen Worf.
My favourite line .... ´We are fools to make war on our brothers in arms.´ Everyone in every army, in every land, is a band of Brothers in Arms. All just humans.
I was lucky enough to see Dire Straits live in Australia back in the 80's as a teenager.... one of the best concerts I have ever seen in my life.... Mark Knopfler makes that guitar sing.....
Being 64 and still attending concerts fairly regularly, I keep saying, "If I could just see Dire Straits, I would die a happy girl"! He is in my top two favorite guitarists, the other being Derek Trucks! But M.K. has like a call and respond type style the I really dig. It's like he sing a verse or line and his guitar plays a response.
Lucky bugger, they came to Mackay Q and I didn’t have the nerve to go by myself, a too damn shy for my own good teenager. Still kicking myself to this day… Next day I went out and bought everything DS, kicked myself harder.
Ditto. Saw DS at Wembley back in the 80's. I have all their albums on vinyl. One of my all time favourite bands. MK is one of the greatest guitarists with a unique playing style & sound. TBH all the band members are very special in their own right.
This was my brother's favourite song, he is sadly not with us anymore it took me years to listen to it again I found it heartbreaking and just too emotional, but lately I look on the bright side and remember the good times we had. Thank you ❤️

This whole album was filled with great songs but this is the heartbreaker because it was written for a soldier, but it could apply to any person who has been affected by all the wars since - which never seem to end.
It's a perfect marriage of video, music and lyrics. All compliment each other perfectly. Such a powerful message. 'We're fools to make war on our brothers in arms'.

Although about the Falklands, it pertains to many wars. There’s a good video about that war. In another video, there’s a WW2 German soldier holding his son. You’re all so sweet. Luv ya!

I BEG OF YOU ! ! , please listen to Home Free’s cover. They do an A Cappela version that honors Mark’s song, yet brings out the heart twisting feelings and meaning of the song. They show the thankfulness of a wounded soldiers last words for not being left alone, to his anger, pain, and confusion of what happened, to his last goodbye. Their song goes to his fade to black, THEN ends with two notes that sound like a pipe-organ! Chills from beginning to end.
I have seen a lot of people recommending home free's cover, so I listened to it. It's decent cover, very different and because it is A Capella it loses so much for me. another comment here says Mark is but the narrator and his guitar is the singer, and that is so true. So the Home Free version leaves me completely indifferent I'm afraid. This is one of those songs that it would require an exceptional artist/band to cover and even come close to doing the original justice, Home Free isn't it.

It is about the futility of war and the people you are trying to kill are your fellow brothers living on one world under one sun but living in different ones. When they are done trying to kill each other, for reasons unknown to them, they return to their valleys and their farms and they will no longer burn to be brothers in arms. Just fellow members of the same world under the same sun instead of living in different ones.
This song demonstrates how foolish it is for us humans to fight against one another our world is just a speck in the universe we are an island in the cosmos and we are all brothers and sisters...WAR should be outdated and consigned to history.
