Tree Shadows Study & ArtGraf Playtime

  • Spring is coming, so before the trees leaf out I'm taking more time to study the light and shadow pattern on tree trunks and tree limbs and the fascinating designs made by bare tree branches. In this video I also play with water-soluble pencil or graphite and a set of ArtGraf earth color pigment blocks to tint the graphite with.

    "Pretty good for a study" Oh, the humility of the ridiculously talented teacher. Beautiful tree. Thanks for these tree videos - I'm obsessed with trees but have an awful time drawing them, partly because of the complexity of them, partly because I'm not very good at determining proportion. I'll keep watching tree drawing videos as long as you keep making them.

    Love trees! My 10 acres is heavily wooded and I never tire of looking at the trees - winter is my favorite time to study them. We had a light dusting of snow yesterday and today is bright and sunny so there is a high contrast between the branches and the snow on them - really highlights the form. Thanks for the video Steve! Great and interesting video. I have sepia and brown and figured out a way to carry them. I cut each in half, then glued one half of each color into an old eye shadow compact. I also attached palette paper to the inside lid using Repositionable Glue tape. Now I can easily grab the compact and not get my fingers messy. I love the look they gave to your tree, Steve.

    Steve, I watch your videos to inspire me to paint. Trees are intimidating, so I am very happy that you have done several. Watching you makes it seem more "doable." I wish I could snap my fingers and magically have your many years of experience. My husband is a painter, and when a client asks how long it took him to paint a painting, he always answers, "Forty years." Because that's how long it takes to have the EXPERIENCE to do it.
    Blessings to you, and enjoy this beautiful Spring that is beginning all around us (here in Texas anyway).

    Glad you showed these, I have looked at them a couple of times. I was concerned that the cost was more to cover the packaging and didn’t know about the product for the price. Oh well, I am sure there are many people that love them and they are perfect for what they use them for. It’s just like Cretacolor Aqua Brigue set. I love them and they cover paper so well. To me its just another form of gouache. The tree is beautiful and its always great when you go into detail on the shadows and how to handle the curves of a subject. Please don’t ever stop, we all need the lessons and the reminders. 👍🏻

    Thank you so much! I'm drawing (or painting) a tree a day in 2019 hoping, obviously, to get better. This video was incredibly helpful and I'm going to watch all your tree videos. Trees are such puzzles, especially this time of year in the north. I start out to really capture each nuance and by the skinny branches am exhausted. I draw from life (through my windows this time of year) or from photos I have taken. Once in awhile I break this rule - because they are my rules to break - but mostly not. Thanks again.

      Sarah Noda I’m guessing that you are sometimes needing peace and quiet when the boys are noisy. For clarity between you, your authenticity, and their consideration it would be healthy for you to verbalize this before retreating from them. That way they have a choice in the strategy for you to get piece and quiet which may be a different than the one of retreat from them. 🤷‍♀️

  • @SheilaLandry
    @SheilaLandry 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you. You saved me about $100 (with shipping. ;) ) I had been looking after getting these because I, too, had thought that they would be similar to the Derwent Graphitint line. I have the XL blocks and there are no reds or similar colors like that and I had thought they would have the same muted look. They are pretty - but I have many watercolors that I can easily use, as you said. I received your beautiful M. Graham 10 tube set about a month ago and I am loving the versatility and using it for so many things. I also love your videos that show how you mix them and I can boast that my palette looks as 'messy' as yours - but I am using every bit and just having a ball extending the already-mixed colors. I have supplemented your 10 colors with just a couple of my favorites for when I am too lazy to mix them or run out of room.
    I was wondering . . . (always dangerous!) I have the ArtGraf small tin of graphite (which I made a beautiful flamingo painting with greyscale following a class from Maria Raczynska) and I thought if I wanted brighter or 'different' colors I would be able to mix the graphite with regular watercolors. (?) Have you ever tried that? I guess the best teacher is experience, but I thought I would throw it out there, as the small tin is inexpensive and there may be some others who follow you who may want to try it. Or you could do so and show us your thoughts on it.
    Anyway - thanks, as always for the great information.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can. You might want to keep the graphite out of your watercolor palette and mix them on a separate surface. Styrofoam plate or small plastic palette for example. Just to keep your regular watercolors clean.

    Not what I would have expected either, but a great study anyway. Will be using the hints on light and form. I too love trees but I have a question. I don’t think I have ever fully understood the squinting thing. Does it have to do with leaving out details or seeing certain colors. I heard its benefits described in so many ways and never really understood or been able to achieve what the “teacher” is describing. Maybe you can help me further my watercolor Sensei. Again, yet another great and informative video!

      Reducing detail mainly and seeing major areas of contrast.

    @ mind of watercolor... are the water soluble graphite pencils erasable after they dry ?

    • @PeterQuentercrimsonbamboo

      Not well erasable after drying - once wetted, the graphite ends up binding to the paper, rather than just being layered on the paper as with left-dry graphite -

      no, no more than regular watercolor. It erases well while its dry before activation. The pigment gets into the paper once activated. Some lifting with a wet brush is possible but just like watercolor the amount depends on paper and color.

    I'm rather surprised that there was no blue. Other than that, they seem nice.

      You can use the black as a "blue" because of the cool tones in it! Not the same like a primary blue, but eh, it works! ✨

    I was trying to sketch some trees from life, but kept getting overwhelmed by all the branches. I felt like I kept getting lost in my drawing. Any tips on how not to get overwhelmed by all the branches when drawing trees?

      Squint a lot! It really works. Draw the largest branches first. Add in only enough fine branches to make the tree feel convincing.

    Looks like quality watercolors but the form factor doesn't make much sense, maybe for sketching on very large paper, and then spray it with a plant moisturizer?

      I kind of agree. Don't like the tailor's chalk hand held form for the way I paint. Messy too.

      Darkvine that’s how I would like to try them. Sketching on a large paper like 18x24 and then activating with brush or spray. I think it would render unique results. Impressionistic and expressive of course. Ahhh, but I have to stay on track. This is off my path for now.
