காரைக்குடியில் இருந்து சென்னைக்கு கவிஞர் கண்ணதாசன் தனது டிரங்கு பெட்டியுடன் முதன் முதலில் வந்திறங்கியபோது, அவரை மெரினா
கடற்கரையே வரவேற்றது. போக வேண்டிய இடத்துக்குச் செல்ல பயணக் கட்டணம் (25 பைசா) இல்லாததால், உழைப்பாளர் சிலையின் அடியில் தலைவைத்து
படுத்தார். காவலர் வந்து, “இங்கே படுக்கக் கூடாது”என்று அப்புறப்படுத்தினார். அப்போது தலையில் டிரங்கு பெட்டியைச் சுமந்து நடந்தே சென்றார் கண்ணதாசன். இவ்வாறாக, சென்னையில் வாழ்க்கையைத் தொடங்கிய கண்ணதாசன் சாதித்ததும், சொந்தத் திரைப் படத்தைத் தயாரித்தார். முதல் காட்சி உழைப்பாளர் சிலைக்கு முன்பாக இரவுக் காட்சிப் பாடல்.
