- The German occupation of Yugoslav Macedonia started as soon as the Bulgarian occupation ended when in September 1944 Bulgaria switched sides. The Germans now installed a puppet government named: Independent Macedonia. The hoped for the help of Ivan Mikhailov and his movement: IMRO (Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization). Earlier the Anti-fascist Assembly for the National Liberation of Macedonia (ASNOM) proclaimed an independent Macedonian state. Eventually, the Yugoslav partisans took over the country.

a. it's a widespread myth that Skopje is part of the "region of Macedonia". Communists promoted this claim as a proxy to claim actual Macedonia, located in Greece, is part of a "divided' and "occupied' Macedonia. No such "region of Macedonia" has ever existed in history until 20th century.. Alexander's homeland is literally 100 percent Greece. Skopje was known as kingdom of Paeonia in antiquity (which Philip conquered). Later Skopje was also part of Roman Macedonia but that wasn't Alexander's homeland not did it have the borders many erroneous claims as "region of Macedonia" today. There was also a Greek-speaking eastern Roman (Byzantine) Macedonia located in Thrace but even that isn't part of the so-called "region of Macedonia'
b. This video makes a major error by claiming the Bulgarians "Bulgarianized". The former Yugoslvians living in Vardar already considered themselves Bulgarians. That' exactly why they saw Bulgarians as liberators (why Bulgaria also objects to their historical propaganda like Greece does). It was actually Yugoslav communists that "Macedonianized" as a method to eliminate Bulgarian irredentism. Loring Danforth mentions this but even he fails to appreciate they literally considered themselve Bulgarian "Macedonians" back then. This is exactly why the US government not only refused to recognize them as "macedonians" during the greek civil war but provided Greeks the weapons to fight communists promoting this exact "Macedonia" agenda.
c. You are correct that IMRO was a Bulgarian organization but it's worth noting the former Yugoslavians claim IMRO was a "macedonian" organization. Virtually the entire country (with exceptions) edit out their own national heroes used to self-identify as ethnic Bulgarians.
Prior to 1944 Skopje was not called "Maceodnia" by Yugoslav communists. It was called Vardar (which is the name listed on maps from that era). After 1944 is when they created the "People's Socialist Republic of Macedonia" and wiped out Bulgarian identity in Yugoslavia for purely a "Macedonian" one.
Today, Around half the former Yugoslavia now claim not to even be Slavs, but ancient Macedonians... aka founders of the Hellenistic period but ones that are antihellenic.
It's unfortunate so many, including some academics, journalists, politicians and even shockingly human rights groups that pretentiously lectured Greeks on this issue today, unethically, evade over this obvious lying and irredentism. Many of those that lectured Greeks on this issue. eem more interested in hiding their mistake of recognizing these frauds as "macedonians" than the ethics and history they claimed to speak for.. The fact is the former Yugoslavians are about as "Macedonians" as they are "Athenians" or "Spartans'. Zero. It's a gigantic lie.
Despite all the patronizing foreign bigots that ridiculously recognized them and today patronizing evade over their behavior, this fake country and fake ethnic group is destined to implode under the weight of the lies it peddles .Ancient Macedonian artifacts, all written in Greek aren't going anywhere. Nor are the references to their own "Macedonian" historical figures referencing themselves as Bulgarians.

Well, consider that some of them are not ethnic groups. For example, you probably think that us Montenegrians are ethnic group, but we are Serbs in fact. Bosniaks are just muslim Serbs and Croats. Macedonians are either Serbs of Bulgarians. So there's really not that much ethnic groups, just too many countries.

As small correction, 3:45 Mihailov didn't go to Italy in 1934 but to Turkey from 1934-1938 then to Poland till 1940 then for a short time in Hungary and only after that did he go to Croatia. After the end of the war he spend the rest of his life in Italy.

He spent time in Bansko, Pirin, Bulgaria and had a headquarters there. It’s in the foothills of Pirin just outside of the city. It’s a very large house and I’ve been there a couple times but it’s locked up and abandoned. A small restaurant is a few feet away. I’m not sure during what years but maybe the 1930’s and there was a lot of fighting and killing between his faction and others. My mother’s side of the family is from Bansko and they said it was like mafia warfare and not a good time for the people in Bansko and I would imagine throughout Macedonia. I believe that his wife even killed an opposition leader. Mihailoff always aid that he was a Macedonian-Bulgarian but wanted an independent Macedonia. He lived a long life in Austria or somewhere else in Hiding and came out as a very old man and still proclaimed his Bulgarian heritage but was really no more than a mobster. They made the people support them by forcing them to give money and food at least that’s what they did in Bansko. Now IMRO has changed its philosophy.

26000 Serbs who were expelled by the Bulgarians were in fact colonists settled among the hostile local population and given the best lands. During the Balkan wars nearly 300 000 Macedonians escaped Serbian rule in Bulgaria and in the interwar period supported the violent struggle of VMRO. A lot of them returned briefly as part of the Bulgarian army and administration and left again when Bulgaria itself was occupied by Stalin and withdrew from all Yugoslav territories in September 1944.
One more thing: the Germans were in control of Macedonia ever since they invaded Yugoslavia in 1941. They gave different parts to be “administered” by its allies but kept overall control until a postwar settlement. They had small detachments in the Balkans except for an army in Greece and took over from the Italians and Bulgarians when they changed sides.

I think it was not stressed enough this was only an idea that never saw any realization, mostly bc neither Mihajlov or Tatarchev found any support among the people who were heavily on the side of the communists as all the rebels were fighting for the partisans. Macedonia may be the place where fascism failed the most to get a local support.

In late May 1934 Ivan Mihaylov didn't fled to Italy, but to Turkey and later on to Poland (in 1939). His memoirs are 3000 pages and they are quite interesting...

Non of this is true.Macedonian Army fought the Germans and established modern Macedonian Republic.After the war in 1945.Macedonian State fought the Soviets and British - USA backed up with air force.Macedonian state was devided in to British Aegean Macedonia after 3 years of war and napalm bombs. Pirin Macedonia Under Soviet Occupation, and Vardar Macedonia as Yugoslav Federal republic .At the time in 1948-49 Yugoslavia federation switched sides and became Neutral .And USA backed up with Marshall plan and weapons supply.The Macedonian republic remained existing only in Vardar part .Newly Srbija was made in 1947 on previously occupied Macedonian Territory called Matea till 1878 and Russian colonial occupation.Soviet Occupied zone of Macedonia Eastern Matea Trace Odrin and Pirin was incorporated as Soviet Satellite Bulgaria previous Russian colony 1878 and Austrian German 1914-1918 and 1934-1944.Greece was Russian colony partly British and French in 19 the cent but became British in 1912 and partly Italian German 1939-1944.In 1945 Britain invaded and recolonised in 1948.The Territory before the Russian colonial invasion was known as Macedonian Ahaia.

Thank you Stefan for bringing the Serbianization of Macedonia before the Bulgarian army came here. Sadly, almost 95% of the Macedonian population have no clue about this. That's why "we" always view Bulgaria as the enemy because they came here as "occupiers", but no one talks about the Serbian colonization and occupation in the period between the WW1 and WW2, and yet we call them brothers.
Sadly commies from both sides (Bulgaria and Yugoslav Macedonia) were so much against an independent Macedonian state back then, maybe things would've been different now..
Between WW2 and the time Yugoslavia took over Vardar nearly the entirely population of Skopje considered themselves Bulgarian "Macedonians". This "minor" part of history is unfortunately edited out by fanatics in Skopje. Its also a shame your foreign apologists lack the integrity to admit Greeks had a point. Overall truthful historical video, but some very important details need to be mentioned.
1) There was no Macedonian ethnicity, before such was proclaimed in 1945.
2) The whole geographic region of Macedonia (not only the current Republic of North Macedonia) was inhabited by a population which widely declared itself as Bulgarian. There are numerous documents available today that show that fact.
3) IMRO was founded by people who declared themselves as Bulgarian. In their organizational laws’ book, it is stated that a member of the organization could be any Bulgarian. Later on, when it became clear that the great European states would not allow the creation of a new big state in Europe (namely Bulgaria), the IMRO leaders changed their goal from “liberating Macedonia and Southern Thrace from the Ottomans and joining Bulgaria,” to “liberating Macedonia and Southern Thrace from the Ottomans and gaining autonomy, with a future date of joining Bulgaria.” When that idea was also seen as unrealistic, the goal became to “liberate Macedonia and gain sovereignty in likeness of Switzerland.” That idea was brought forth by the IMRO leader, Todor Aleksandrov, and was carried through by his heir, Ivan Mihailov, who was the last leader of the historical IMRO.
4) When the Balkan allied states (Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece & Montenegro) were preparing for the First Balkan War against the Ottoman Empire, they signed treaties, specifying who will keep what lands from the newly gained territories, in the event they won. Bulgaria was to keep most of the geographic region of Macedonia, due to the Bulgarian character of the local population there (up to 85% in some areas) and the establishment of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church (Exarchate) in those lands, which were assigned to that church by the Ottoman Sultan, based on the request of the local population. After the victory of the Balkan Allies, over the Ottoman Empire, Serbia and Greece quickly negotiated behind Bulgaria’s back to keep the territories where their armies were currently stationed. If Bulgaria was to retaliate, they were going to join forces to defeat Bulgaria and keep the lands that way. Of course, Bulgaria retaliated and that started the Second Balkan War. As that happened, Russia encouraged Romania to invade Bulgaria from the north, even though that country had no beef in this dispute. Romania did invade Bulgaria from the north and reached unopposed almost to the capital, Sofia. When the Ottomans saw this ordeal, they quickly decided to reclaim some of the freshly lost territories and they invaded Bulgaria from the southeast on their own accord! Bulgaria was forced to surrender and sign a peace treaty not in its favor, which meant losing territories to all of its neighbors. Most of those territories were inhabited by population that mainly declared itself as Bulgarian (again, there are plenty of documents that show that fact). Well, next came WW l and WW ll, in both of which Bulgaria fought on the losing side… The only reason Bulgaria entered any of these wars was the attempt to unite all Bulgarians in one state. In WW ll, 40% of Bulgaria’s GDP was injected in the development of infrastructure in Macedonia, in the belief that Bulgaria would get to finally, rightfully keep those territories, but in the end it proved to be all in vain and to the gain of another nation.
5) After WW ll, Greece kept 50% of geographic Macedonia (while having 10% local Greek population), Serbia kept 40% of geographic Macedonia (while having 2% of the local population) and Bulgaria kept 10% of geographic Macedonia (while having 85% of the local population). At first, Serbia called the newly gained region of Vardar Macedonia (today’s Republic of North Macedonia) South Serbian Vardar Banovina, and tried to Serbianize the local Bulgarian population, but when it became clear that this was not likely to happen, Serbia gave Vardar Macedonia independence inside of the newly formed Yugoslavia. A lot of ethnic cleansing ensued, where the whole Bulgarian elite of the region was massacred, jailed and tortured, until most of that population either perished or immigrated. The remaining Bulgarian population saw that example and had to follow the new rules if it were to survive and have a decent life. Years of anti-Bulgarian propaganda followed these events, where false information was included in the history books and a specific law was passed, which prohibited any of the citizens of the newly formed state to proclaim as Bulgarian. The few who rebelled were swiftly punished. In 1992, Macedonia got its independence from Yugoslavia as the later dissolved.
That saw the formation of the first independent Macedonian state, since the Kingdom of Macedon more than two thousand years ago. However, the kingdom was a Hellenic (Greek), while the newly formed state was Slavic and the two of them had nothing in common, except for the name. Even so, the current citizens of the Republic of North Macedonia were well indoctrinated that they are the descendants of the Kingdom of Macedon and that Bulgaria is their biggest foe that needs to be hated with passion. That is the case to this day. Nowadays, the Republic of North Macedonia would not admit to the fact that it’s ancestors were of Bulgarian ethnicity and that became an effective obstacle on the way to their accession into the European Union, because Bulgaria would not have it. Very sad story for everyone involved!

Maybe it has to do something with the Monestery of Prohor Pcinjski of SO Church just over the Serbian border.

Fun fact: The referendum for independence in 1991 was held on the 8th of September, which was the date that the puppet state of Independent Macedonia was proclaimed back in 1944. To this day it is unknown why, since the most important date in modern Macedonian history is the 2nd of August, or Ilinden (known for the Ilinden Uprising in 1903 and the first session of the Antifascist Assembly of the National Liberation of Macedonia or ASNOM in 1944).

Some parts of them were for independent Macedonia accompanied to Bulgaria, but most of them were for independent Macedonia. Most were graduates from the Bulgarian male gymnasium in Salonika or teachers in bulgarian exarchist's schools in Ottoman Macedonia . All were well educated and of bulgarian self determination .

The Macedonian National Archive has published volumes with original documents on everything related to VMORO from 1893 to 1924 and later. Reading those should be important for you as a patriot.
After WWI the Serbs banned the very word Macedonia and Macedonian as they treated everyone as “old” or “south Serb”. The country was called Southern Serbia and later Vardar Banovina.
In contrast Bulgaria not only allowed but actively supported all things Macedonian - refugee political and cultural organisations (Makedonski bratstva), Macedonian institute, even Macedonian opera. It was constantly accused by Serbia and Greece for sponsoring VMRO and asked to ban it and hand over its leaders.
Yet the Macedonians as they were called by all alongside the Dobrudzanci and Trakijci from Odrinsko, were supported by all and played an active role in forming Bulgarian politics abroad and at home. It all ended with the bloodbaths between Mihailovisti and Protogerovisti in the 1930s and the murder of Serbian king Alexander and french foreign minister Barthu This was a cause for war against Bulgaria which was narrowly averted by the disbanding of VMRO and the escape of Ivan Mihailov. Still, he remained loyal to the cause of independent Macedonia as Switzerland of the Balkans - the free home from all its ethnic groups - Bulgarian, Vlachs, Turks, Albanians, Serbs, Greeks, etc.

Am I right in saying that Yugoslav Macedonia was relatively fortunate in both WW2, post WW2 and in the 90s Yugoslavia break up, in avoiding the worst of war ravages or atrocities in that region? It seems that Greece and other parts of Yugoslavia fared worse.

Independent Macedonia was a nation that was denied by every SS General there, and wasn’t recognised by anyone so it failed to be anything for a day. And, when Bulgaria switched to allies, independent Macedonia was technically given to Nedic’s Serbia.

Awesome video really liked it I rarely get to see my nation being covered in different periods in history there were some parts though that I found rather irritating like IMRO being called a bulgarian organization where in reality they were Macedonians trying to liberate themselves from the occupier. Overall a pretty good video well done keep up the good work.
The part about IMRO is so wrong.First of all,Ivan Mihajlov was born in 1896.TMORO or VMRO is created in 1893 by Damjan Dame Gruev,Hristo Batandzhiev,Petar Pop Arsov,Andon Dimitrov,Hristo Tatarchev and Ivan Hadzi Nikolov.Their idea was a "Independent,united Macedonia".Later when Goce Delchev(the most famous Macedonian revolutionary) came in to the organization he created a book with rules and laws.The first rule was:"We dont want our neighbours to free us,we will free ourselves alone".Meaning that Macedonians didnt want (mainly) Bulgarians,Greeks or Serbs to give them freedom beacouse they will try to annex Macedonia.Please inform yourself better beacouse Ivan Mihaljov is Bugarophile and nazist,who disgraced Macedonia.

Though VMRO's Goče Delčev was initially pro-independence both nationally and territorially it later got betrayed by the pro-Bulgarian part of it. And regarding the Communist party recognizing the state, I believe that every small state that came to survive in the 19th and 20th century had a political reason for it behind (backed from larger powers like Russia did for Bulgaria, Russia and England for Greece etc.) Nice work overall tho 👍👍

Amazing video, had no idea about this. I have one question, where there stories in WW2 similar to the Angels of Mons? I have heard some wierd stories from my grandparents. One of those was that you could hear the dead people calling you if you went near the river Drina at night (those people being killed by the Chetniks and Germans during the war, their bodies were thrown into the river), but I feel like that was just to scare away children from going near the river at night.

On the river Drina banks are lots of dark and dense woods, low mountains, no planes for the agriculture and comfortable cities.

Tito supported the nation building and statehood founding of the 2 nations declared on 2nd Conference of AVNOJ in Jajce, NDH-ISC, at the time, on 29th Nov 1943, the Montenegrians and the Macedonians.
Supported the old nations from the Royal Yugoslavia and Austro- Hungary too, but Serbians somewhat less.
Later post war that Conference was implemented in the first Constitution of FNRJ of 31st Jan 1946.
Only nationalists that opposed the Tito and went out of the communist agenda, or aligned with the hostile foreign power - like during the political switch towards the Stalin's USSR, were prosecuted.

In 1908 Macedonian Trace was occupied and in 1917 after the fall of Russian Empire Austria took over the colony.When Astrian Empire fall the colony was under French rule.After the coup in 1934 Nazi Germany took over the colony.Many kvinslings took part in German army wearing German uniforms and armed with German weapons as you can see on the video .While in Vardar Macedonian Dutchy which was part of the Kingdom Yugoslavia in 1941 Macedonian liberating army was formed.All the Previous guerilla troups and local rebels who fought the colonials 1878-1941 joined together in an Army.With head command free territories formed in 1942-43 .In 1943 the modern Macedonian Assembly and parlament were proclaimed.Macedonian army took over the weapons of defeated Italian Army ,some of the Italians joined the Macedonian army. Macedonian army fought the German troups while the Kvinslings from Sofia ran away long time ago ,they were just fodder meat mainly former criminals and outlaws symply traitors.In 1944 Soviet troups enter Sofia and occupied the colony.
