- Isaac is the second of the three main patriarch ancestors of the Israelites, God’s chosen people.
He was born to Abraham and Sarah in their old age to fulfill God’s promise that Abraham would be the father of many nations.
God tested Abraham’s faith in that promise by asking him to sacrifice Isaac on an altar. Isaac showed his trust in his father by listening to him and not trying to escape before God sent an angel to stop Abraham.
As Abraham’s heir, Isaac needed to find a wife to start a family. Abraham sent his servant to find a woman from among his people. With God’s guidance he found a beautiful woman named Rebekah who agreed to meet and marry Isaac. Like Isaac’s mother, Rebekah was unable to have children for a long time. Isaac prayed to God for a child and his prayer was answered. Rebekah gave birth to twin sons, Esau and Jacob, who did not get along.
Isaac favored Esau and Rebekah favored Jacob. Rebekah and Jacob fooled an elderly and nearly blind Isaac into making Jacob his heir. Jacob became the third of the patriarchs of Israel rather than Esau.
After Isaac died he was buried with his father and mother and his wife Rebekah.
