  • In todays video I share a snippet of a lesson with 'Tai' a current Off The Track Thoroughbred in for Retraining with me. I am riding Tai to demonstrate how I ask him to stay forward and carry himself correctly.
On the Bit and Roundness is not about a forced head and neck outline held by the reins, but instead a symptom of the horse using his body correctly, maintaining balance and self carriage.
    Hope you enjoy the video!
I use Equitation Science Principles as my training foundation.
I help Off The Track Thoroughbreds transition from a racehorse to a calm and confident equestrian horse using COMPASSIONATE TRAINING and WHOLISTIC REHABILITATION.

Awesome training thank you! My OTTB is now 5 last race June 2022 and after downtime working now in remuscling and I do notice he wants to slow down and bring his head up braces against the bit. I wear spurs but gentle with them for him to respond to my leg and move forward.

Lovely information, thank you for the video. I do have a question about topline: So I recently obtained an ottb and he raced until he was 7. He is currently 10 - nearly 11. He has a really bony topline, (super high withers too), but Im wondering if there is anything else I can do for him. Hes on a performance feed and a muscle mass supplement. We do carrot stretches and a lot of work backing up to strengthen his back. Is there anything else I could do to help?
Edit: also where are his boots from?

Hi Sarah, I am glad to hear you enjoyed the video😊. To answer your question re Topline, yes there is other ways to improve your boys topline. It sounds like you are covering the diet, a good source of protein helps build topline. The carrot stretches and backing can help but won't have a significant impact without incorporating a good exercise routine where he is using his body correctly with a healthy posture. Before you can do this it is important to make sure pain or injury is not influencing his poor topline including bad hoof angles. Have you had him checked over by a vet and Bodyworker? Once you have eliminated any pain related issues etc. Adding an exercise routine where he is using his body correctly in a free and healthy posture will make the biggest difference. This will take time and also depends on where you are at with him. Has he been retrained or do you need to go through a retraining programme? Sorry lots of questions. If you can fill me in with some more details it will give me an idea of where you could start. The boots are called Iconoclast Boots . They are great boots! What country are you in? I can put the link to them in the comments here for you😊

@@offthetrackthoroughbredsuc9987 thank you for getting back to me! he has been retrained for the last three years, and he has been very recently checked over by two vets that gave him the all clear. I have a chiro coming out very soon to adjust him, and he gets his feet done every 4 weeks as he is barefoot. I'm not sure how much if any time off he had before I purchased him 10 months ago, but he had a very poor topline when I got him. The vet told me to continue riding him to build it up as it is the best way. I've started walking him over 4x4 (broke as hell don't have poles lmao) to build core and back muscle as well. Also I am in the US:D
