  • So I visited the new Walmart store at Hillside Mall (which was built in the former Sears space) and expected to see a new elevator shaft with two 330A's...but instead, they kept the old Otis Series 1 that was in the former Sears store. I am quite surprised they didn't tear out this elevator and add new ones. I like the charm of the Otis Series 1, however only having one small elevator in a Walmart doesn't seem like a good idea, especially if the cart escalators go out of service. They did re-do the cab at least!

Yes this is indeed the original elevator Sears added in 1986 but like you I was also surprised as it is small and woefully inadequate for those with shopping carts and larger mobility devices. Sure there are conveyors next to the (brand new Schindler escalators) for carts but for people with visual and mobility challenges they are awkward and clunky. Walmart really should have installed a modern wider elevator indentical to what Canadian Tire at the other end of the mall has which are safer and much more accessible.. I have to say they really cheaped out on this new store on so many levels. On the other hand; gotta love that classic Series 1 chime.

Also, the cart escalators tend to not be very reliable. A few days after I shot this video, I went back to the store and the cart escalator for the down direction was already out of service! So as you can probably imagine, there was a HUGE lineup for the small elevator (15-20 people long). A lot of people just gave up and walked out of the store. And then what happens if the one elevator they do have goes out of service? There is zero redundancy which is quite a problem. Doesn't seem like they planned it very well!

Hm, they still kept the old elevator. Interesting considering it turned into a Walmart.

Yeah it definitely surprised me, especially since the Walmart has been under construction for several years. Although I love the nostalgia of the Series 1, only having one small elevator in a major supermarket is pretty crappy elevator service if you ask me.
