Actually Ian, strength training your whole life should be the goal as it dramatically increases your health span. By going to the gym and working hard even at 70, you won't need a walker at 90. I don't train for the physique, but for all the extra activities and time I'll have with my grandchildren and even great grand children. Now is the perfect time to prepare for the rest of our lives. If we do this, we'll probably live substantially longer than any humans since biblical times
For me it isn't really about working out forever, but doing physical stuff forever. I've had years where I was only climbing, then about 2 years of grinding gym, got bigger, but missed the movement, so now I started doing Jui jitsu and yes, my physique got bit worse, but that knowledge and mental strength stayed and am using it to get better at jui jitsu. In my opinion it doesn't matter that much what physical activity you are doing, but that you are doing it. (btw love your vids)
It takes like a solid year for you to notice significant muscle loss if you stop working out and even if you do you can easily regain your gains due to muscle memory.
I started going to the gym at 17 I'm 52.....37 years at the gym. It will be with me 4ever. It has to be a passion for you and a life style to keep going til the end. By the way even if you are young u don't need to spend to many hours at the gym and when you are older 40-45 minutes of terror and u r out. Stay natural my man. God bless 🙏💪
Ian, I’ve worked out since I was 16 which is 25 years ago. I thought the same thing. My best advice is to make sure you’re lifting and working out correctly. Mainly to make sure you don’t hurt yourself in the long run. Then you really won’t be able to work out in the future.
Hey Ian it’s always much harder to build muscle for the first time. It’s 90% easier to rebuild the muscle/strength that you once had before a major break
4:17 its not that simple. Its kinda like with gaining/losing weight. When you get to a certain point of having some visible muscle for a while, your body will "remember" that and will try to keep you in that shape. And even if you lose all that muscle, it will be way easier to gain it again than it was to gain it for the first time Hope that helps clear the confusion out!
An opinion about the working out thing. You should not work out for the physique or other things, work out for your health, health is needed in all ages and since you're doing it for that, the other things come as secondary achievements (I.e, a good physique). You need to work out to keep your body healthy unless you have an injury or an illness, and then working out is not healthy. If you do it for a good physique, you might stop after achieving it, or feel less likely to stay motivated, but health is something that needs constant care.
i'd say otherwise, cuz health can't be seen, but physique can. to keep your brain in the focus, you not only need mental setup, but also positive outcome, nice physique is one of that. but i am not talking about muscle monsters, just a body which can endure 27 km run with a person on your back, can lift some weights 2 or 3 times heavier than own body weight, and also capable of straight thinking 🙂
@potter_army yes I do respect your opinion, but just like you , I'd say otherwise. Good health can be seen and felt. As you said, a good physique can be seen, and it's a sign of good health. A BMI ranging from 18-24.9 is a good BMI, and if you're somewhere between that, it can be seen in the form of muscles and mostly lean figure. Even if it can't be seen, you do know that you are better off health wise than others, and that's what matters, if others can't see it, it's fine, work out for yourself, not others. (Respectfully)
Hey ian in your lifting question about lifting and getting older. It takes allot of volume to grow and very little to maintain. So you might do 10 sets a week to grow your chest, to maintain you might only have to do 2-3 sets. So 1 whole body workout a week might be all thats nessesary
dear ian, actually, if you stop working out, it'll take around 4 weeks to get out of shape depending on your diet, but the main problem being inconsistent is you lose some your mental strength first, then your endurance. but if you want to work less and still don't want to get out of shape, do work heavy but for a short time, and keep an eye on your diet as the surplus calories you take gets stored in your body as subcutaneous and adipose fat, also glycogen. also as you are an endurance runner, i can assume your cardiovascular system is pretty healthy. and the main thing you want to keep your body fit is keep your mindset strong, and try not to stress yourself as it may make you feel drained. also, if you want to take a break, whether it maybe for a couple of weeks, you'll have to start working out with lighter weights, but muscle memory comes back very fast, it'll take around 3 weeks to get back where you stopped. stay motivated, stay healthy, just don't use anabolic drugs🙂
Its supposed to be a lifestyle and life long commitment, prioritizing your health is supposed to be afterall. When you reach a point in your life where your priorities will change, you can put this on the back burner and eat/train for maintenance. That would mean working out twice a week and eating for maintenance (reaching daily protein is probably the most important)
4:02 that's also wut I'm thinking about like ppl always wanna bulk and max out their physiques but the bigger u get the harder it'll be to maintain that physique and who knows if ur still gonna be as interested then as u are now
@@Dannathanavious i know but the bigger u get the more protein u actually need to maintain that muscle and let's just say high protein foods aren't really the cheapest foods out there
About your comment on fitness and working out, yeah eventually all people will turn old and have their physique's be gone. But it's a constant work of progress. You said it, consistency is key, and us people who work out will look a whole lot younger in our 50's than the people who've neglected their health all their life. Just look up jacked old people and you'll see what I mean
I injured my wrist and couldn’t work out for 8 months. It was very hard to get back into it and still am not as consistent as I once was. I think we’ll all dwindle off at some point, but even 2 days a week is better than nothing
ur actually spitting about the workout stuff. that’s why roids will never be an option for me, because then you have to be on them for the rest of your life unless you want to look worse than before
Wait til you have kids and a family. Working out is still important but it becomes selfish to a point. You’ll have to find a balance at some point unless you can manage it with your job, day care, and your spouse. Time becomes more restricted
Once you have spent your whole young life building your body it’s not that easy to lose it even if you stop working out. As long as you don’t eat like shit
wait til you get old. I'll get fat in one week if I don't work out consistently. i've been doing a lot of cardio, either on my bike or at the gym. i like cardio because I feel so happy afterwards.
i hope you know, you being at the gym for hours doesn’t do anything for you. Realistically, if you’re working out correctly, you shouldn’t be there longer than an hour. You’re just wasting your time if you are there for that long.
Not true at all. Very ridiculous statement. One hour is sufficient for most people but working out longer can not only be more beneficial but necessary depending on what you are trying to accomplish. Tell that to a body builder that spends all day in the gym. Or a cardio athlete like a competitive runner. An hour is not enough
I literally know a body builder and these people spend all day at the gym because they have nothing better to do. This body builder owns a chiropractic office and explained to me how to do it correctly. Tell me one body builder that is a doctor too. I’ll wait. He went to school for 8 years to become who he is. ill trust him over some ransoms guy who’s been working out for a couple of years.
you do not need to workout alot to mainetain muscle. so why ever stop. you have to eat everyday to for the rest of your life. not really planing to stop that either

That’s not true. Muscle loss can already happen after a few weeks.
@@sarahmuller4416 there's a reason I put "significant". A few weeks is nothing. 2-3 training sessions and you will be back to full strenght.
@@sarahmuller4416no I stopped working out for muscle 6 months ago and I’m the same if not bigger then I was before
You've got about 2-3 weeks before you lose a significant amount of muscle mass and strength.
@OG_Jado it starts after 2 weeks, it's not significant, it would take months of not working out and bad diet to lose most of your progress.
You’ll prob exercise your whole life but as you progress through different stages in life where your focus and your goals will shift
