This man has filled me with confidence for this game. I wasn't really paying attention to it before, but now I'm going to play it for sure. Especially since Reeves was writing for it. And Gears tactics was a pretty good xcom type game that's the first I saw without a grid. I think gridless is the way going forward with these types of games.
I think when some people 1st heard cards, they thought Hearthstone type of cards with monetization (Which Marvel Snap has done a good job of turning on it's head.), But when it was shown to be more Slay the Spire (randomized abilities dealt each turn), I think it opened the eyes of a lot more people who may have been cautious. And as a fan of Marvel's Midnight Sons comics, X-com Enemy Within, X-com 2, and Slay the Spire, this is the perfect game for me. I've already digitally pre ordered it on PS5.
So informative. This completely sold me on the game. Ben is such a good, earnest interviewer, and Jake seemed really open and honest. This interview rules. Hope to see more of these in 2023 from MinnMax.
Midnight Suns was a pass for me until this interview. Wasn't interested in the card aspect, but seems like it's in good hands. Definitely going to check it out now.
@@Alastor255 i did! Didn't beat it, or even get that far through the story I feel like, but had a fun 20ish hours watching super heroes riff with each other and beat up some baddies. I'm still not totally sold that the card based combat was the right way to go, but it works well enough.
Fantastic interview Ben! Jake seems like a fantastic developer who really knows his stuff, and listening to him talk about design has really sold me on this game (I was unsure before). Thanks for the great video =D
Thanks for doing these developer interviews. Much more genuine and much better than ones that come directly from the studios or publisher. Sometimes those seem scripted or staged.
Really good interview, thank you. I'd happily listen to Jake Solomon talk about his games and walk me through the decisions for another hour and more. It's certainly warming me more towards those which went into this game.
This interview gave me so much more confidence to the game than any trailer. It is fascinating to go through the thought process behind the various design choices.
Great interview and great interviewee! Jake Solomon seems like a really engaging and friendly guy. I know Ben isn't too hot on the card aspect of the game, but that's the thing that really turned my head. I like tactic games, but I don't really care for the luck aspect in X-Com. I'm glad Jake really stuck to the idea of turns being individual puzzles. I like having reliable tools that I know the outcome of before I use them. I was always frustrated with setting up a perfect plan of attack, but not really, because there's always a nagging percent chance that one of your attacks will miss and throw the whole plan out of whack. I understand why people like that emergent, high stakes, problem solving, but it's not for me. I'm more of an Into the Breach/Chess kinda guy. I really hope this game rules.
If you want a Marvel tabletop game, check out Marvel Crisis Protocol. It's plastic miniatures that you can build and paint (Like Warhammer 40k), and has pretty much all the mechanics described in the interview including terrain pieces you can throw at people, or knock people into, etc.
The game rocks. Best superhero themed game ever. I was never a deckbuilder fan but this game is truly special and the mechanic works really well with the superhero theme. Can't wait for the sequel.
I think "cards" permanently hurt this game's perception. Listening to him explain it in detail, I get the reasoning, but there are just so many games that lean on a card based system and it's definitely begun feeling like a crutch. I don't know what a good solution here would have been, but dressing it up differently would have gone a long way. As is, even with the explanation, it still feels like a bandaid solution to "it doesn't make sense for superheroes to have hit percentages". The game will have to be a banger to overcome this.
The problem is helping players understand the system by making the abstract concrete. They could have just not called them cards, but that would actually have been even harder to grasp and could have led to an even worse reception.
Then the only thing that's actually trash is your opinion, as you obviously can't tell the difference between a turn based strategy game and an actual card game lmao.
I'm Pulling My Hair Out At The Fact That They Took All The Cool Dark Characters & Made This Weird Ass Game... This Is Something For A Little Kid..!!! Should Be Able To Be Out There Using Your Powers & Kicking Some ASS!!!!!! Instead They Turned It Into Pokemon & Final Fantasy Have A Baby!!! Total BOMB!!!!! BOOOOOOOO!!!!!! It Looks Just Like Another Dragged Out PC Game, I'm So BUMMED OUT I CANNOT STAND IT!!!!!! I Saw The Cover Of The Game & A Couple Cut Scenes My Bud Showed Me & I Was So Excited.... There's room for both grid and gridless tactics games.

What a thumbnail. Lol. Love that Minnmax is getting these interviews.
Amazing interview. It was such a treat. Very excited for Midnight Suns!

Hey, thanks so much! Any help spreading the word online is appreciated.
Really good interview, thank you. I'd happily listen to Jake Solomon talk about his games and walk me through the decisions for another hour and more. It's certainly warming me more towards those which went into this game.
Thanks so much for watching, Zeb. Any help sharing is appreciated!
6:56 that's awesome I love that marvel gave them that freedom man
I’m so excited for this game! The combos look super fun from what they’ve shown on their streams.
Amazing Episode! Thanks for this Ben and Jake!

Really loved this interview. Was already interested in the game, but now I'm thinking it might be a Day 1.
This is a brilliant interview! So much of what Jake has to say about the exploratory nature of game design is relevant industry wide.
Thanks so much for watching, glad you found it!
Love Firaxis, and Xcom. Love Slay the Spire too. Not a marvel fan, but I have faith in Firaxis and think this looks awesome. Great job Ben and Jake!
Really great interview, i watched the whole thing. Was already hyped for this game and am even more so now. The countdown begins.
Well, he's a good salesman- I'm way more excited for the game now than I was before watching this interview😄
Such a great interview! Was vaguely aware it was coming soon, but was only casually interested. Way in now. ^^
Really good interview. Sold me on the game for sure.
3:44 I can't believe he mentioned whizzer what an obscure like golden age timely comics character

Jake Solomon has always been a goddamn real one. Love him.
Great interview, can't wait for the game!
Great interview! Looking forward to sinking into this one in December.
Very excited for this. Great interview. Strong work.
Great interview Ben Hanson

At 3:30 Jake pronounces Lego correctly, like an Adelaidean.
Great interview!
Quick, name 5 characters created by Chris Claremont. Great interview and I am very curious about the game; potential first week purchase? Maybe.😊
Love to hear someone give props to heroclix!
Buddy I knew this game was inspired by HeroClix!
I really hope 2k doesn't ruin this game man
Wish he had made another xcom instead :(

I was interested, until I saw it was a card game. Honestly, trash.

Seems harsh
Spend just one hour with Slay the Spire and you'll see that cards are great, actually.
