@NC910Killa Hi, as far as I know Powell comes from Ap Hywel - Ap meaning son of. There were indeed Welsh Kings of the name Hywell, like Hywel Dda, but I don't know about wether all Ap Hywels would be descended from them - after all Hywel is a comon first name in Wales.
@Pibydd I seen it where a researcher doing the name Powell traced us back to a king in Wales around 1000 AD. Not sure about his name but I am sure that this person did trace us back. He said that the Powell family line descended from the one of the sons of this king.
Exactly and my last name Powell comes from Howell (both Anglicized spellings of Hywel) which is a family said by early researchers to be descended from a king in the early A.D time period. Either way I am proud to be what I am on my father's side I am Welsh and Irish and on my Mother's side I am Native American, Jewish, and Irish.
My father's side of the family is from Wales my last name is Powell. I have heard this is from a ancient line of king of wales not sure if this is right or not said the name wasn't Powell originally it was something I could not pronounce. Later on though it became AP Howell then later the A and H were dropped to become Powell. If anyone has knowledge on this let me know I am American so yeah not sure about history over there.
I have records found online of a researcher in the 18 century who dated the Powells to the Hywel family which was turned in the Howell family and eventually someone in the family changed their name to Powell....both Howell and Powell families are related through origins of their name to Hywel and he also traced the family back to a king in the early A.D time period "I THINK" named Hywel the kind or something to that effect. The Powell family he traced is the one in America where I am at.
Well, if that researcher did his job properly and you are related to that researcher then maybe so. My family have spent countless hours with visits to various churchyards and records offices across Wales but we cannot get back any further than the early 1700s. There are several thousand Powell families in Wales that are not even related by blood and not descended from King Hywel. Powell did not originate from 1 person but from very many that have no connection with Hywel Dda.
Yes but there is a researcher I found online from the 18th Century who was a Powell in America and traced the family back to this man and I descend from the Powells who first arrived in America in the early-mid 1600s.
It would be Hywell Dda ( Hywel the Good). So, named because in the 9th century he was responsible for setting down and codifying Welsh laws which were used by all the Welsh Kingdoms. Not all Powells and Howells are descended from Hywel Dda as many people from different Welsh Kingdoms would have adopted those surnames because Hywel was a common name in those days and still is today. There were many noblemen with that name and not just Hywel Dda, such as Hywel ap Maredudd of Brycheiniog.
The surname Powell would not have been created until around the 16th cent when Welsh names were Anglicised. e.g. Dafydd ap Hywel became David Powell. Maredudd ap Hywel became Meredith Powell. The "ap" means " son of". Prior to the Act of Union of 1536 all Welsh people would have followed the patronymic system but the English surnames were enforced & adopted after enforced Union. So, the name Powell does not have any connection with any of the Welsh Kings such as Hywell Dda.
Love your playing and quite entranced by the video as well. Thank you!!
@NC910Killa
The Welsh spelling of Howell is Hywel, pronounced roughly "HUH-well".
