The Morgenstreich marks the beginning of the Basel Carnival. It's a unique event that starts on the Monday after Ash Wednesday at precisely 4:00 a.m.
During Morgenstreich, the city's lights are turned off, and the streets are illuminated only by the light of participants' lanterns. The participants, dressed in elaborate costumes and masks, form groups called "Cliquen" and parade through the streets playing music with piccolos and drums.
