I'm currently playing through Sonic Heroes, and I can safely confirm that the third chaos emerald is HELL to get. I keep ending up on the ceiling, and falling down! Not to mention the intense lag that the bombs cause.
Okay, love them or hate them, I always get nostalgic when revisiting these special stages thanks to all the times I've played Sonic Heroes. Also I had the time and pleasure of going through each special stage (in both Sonic Heroes and Sonic Generations 3DS) numerous times, so I'm kind of used to do otherwise wonky controls and know how to get through them with little to no difficulty, I practically zip right through them with ease and in no time flat. And it gets really satisfying when getting each Chaos Emerald after clearing a special stage, feels so rewarding.
This is what the Sonic Heroes version should’ve been like, except still lock them behind keys and kept its music intact, but to make it more controllable and a decent challenge as this.

It's only limited to the final boss which is unlocked by beating all of the Special Stages, versus the console version where the emerald are just given to you
Anyone who says that this is like the Sonic Heroes counterpart, I raise the fact that Emerald 3 doesn’t make you want to *D I E* in this version.
Getting the emeralds in Sonic Heroes is horrible

Just complete the current zone. The Special Stage will appear when you do.
