Before I really got into knowing the BJJ competitive scene I though Bernardo Faria was just a guy who had made an incredibly succesful platform for hosting the best talent in the world. Even the whole "huge honor for me" thing I thought was just because he was meeting his idols. But no, these guys are his peers, he's just that humble and understands that everyone has aspects of their game that are worse than what other people bring on that technique. If I remember right there was a guy he had on one time who was still a brown belt just because he knew that the brown beltin question had the best whatever technique he'd ever seen. Truly one of the most humble and open minded people Ive ever seen

When Danaher said “it’s a pass you might not like but someone’s always gonna use it to pass your guard” I already knew it was the knee slice... as a half guard player this is one of my most constant battles lol. Anyone else?

    • @joeyripswell

i never play 1/2 guard but i always use knee cut to pass lol

good man. im a white belt 4 stripe i took the perma genin route and would skip gi classes to avoid any premature promotion.
now im starting to feel ready for it so i will be getting it soon.
that was of course 3 years ago for you , i would assume you are a purple belt now. i don't even know where ill be in 3 years when it comes to the outside world let alone 1. but im happy i got to experience jiujutsu enough to work towards a solid (GI) blue belt.

As a white belt I can only imagine how profitable a 3 day seminar or even better a solid week of training just the fundamentals with John would be. The way he teaches especially concepts just clicks with me, & my ability to recall the technique or concept vs some other great professors is on a different level. I would love to see John do a entire video stripped down for bjj for self defense. I know that is what got him into it (NYC bouncer), but he is clearly focused on competition which is clear even in his verbage.

Purple is the second given on your merit. You are not a purple belt, if you can't get out from the bottom against a blue belt (unfortunately which is what I am). If you don't have a good strategy on both bottom and top, you're again not deserved for a purple (which is again what I am), and so forth.

The reason is bc the brain space you use to worry about your next belt is replaced with knowledge of the art of jiujitsu as your skill set gets amplified. Enjoy the journey. Enjoy the art. Very grateful for these videos. The fundamentals is what all the greats stress. And with all these guards and tricks, it’s easy to get lost in “what should I work on?”. I’m a 4 year white belt. My coach doesn’t give belts out like other gyms. I rolled with my two buddies who are purple belts and they said I’m at least a 2 stripe blue belt. It’s frustrating because this video is what I’ve been wanting to know so I can strive and focus on getting my blue belt. I train both, Gi for a maybe a year and no Gi for 4 years.

John is organizing BJJ and defining the system in terms of its rules. He’s literally giving structure to reality at a rate that is so far beyond everyone else. I guess an education in philosophy CAN be profitable.

That breathing by the cameraman completely ruins what is (probably) such an informative video.

Is this video intended to come out from BJJ Fanatics? My BJJ skill is still bits and pieces in a scramble, even though it became much more organized than before after purchasing and watching Danaher's previous videos. I hope I am equipped with a structured knowledge of BJJ skills. Thank you.
