    • @TroyMcMillan
      @TroyMcMillan  ปีที่แล้ว

      I do hear you! It is great filament, and I think worth the investment if you print a few of their planes especially. The pricing is approximately the cost of another roll in shipping, like you said if you purchase a few rolls at one time is the best way to get the most bang for your buck.

We’re messing around with 75% scale builds and PolyAir of 3DLabs Spitfire and P51D Mustang. Tip stalling is a major issue with these warbirds. A lot of learning still to be done.

    Troy, I tried to print the piper and I did printed every part but the holes to put filament as a hinge is too small. And the hole to put the filament as the reinforcement of the wing is also smaller than a regular filament. Do you know what is my mistake??

    • @TroyMcMillan
      @TroyMcMillan  ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you using LWPLA or regular PLA? Either way it has to do with having the flow rates too high, so it is printing the walls of the plastic too thick, so you need to reduce the flow rate. For regular pla, i print at 215C and 102% flow. For LWPLA, i print at 235C and 55% flow. I hope that helps :)

    Troy can I ask you please why you dont use PETG for plane printing??

    • @TroyMcMillan
      @TroyMcMillan  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, for this plane specifically, I used LWPLA because i wanted to save weight because this is a smaller plane and i want it to be as light as I could. In general, I don't use PETG or ABS for my builds because it has pretty bad warping, so when you are printing out thin parts I find there can be warping - which just doesn't happen with PLA or LWPLA.

    Great build as always Troy. I just got some HT LW-PLA that I plan to try with this model. A couple of comments that others may find helpful...Personally I have a hard time with medium CA setting too fast and also just too much glue mess in general. I find using the Zap Slow CA with the Zap Flexi glue tips makes assembly a lot cleaner and easier. Also for the servo...personally I wouldn't use blue painters tape to hold the servo. Blue painters tape is almost a low tack tape so I would be concerned with it holding. I use Shoe Goo which peels off the servo just fine when it comes time to move it to another plane. But if you must use tape I'd suggest the 3M automotive mask as it is much higher adhesion then the blue painters tape.

    Since this plane is about the size of the cub you did a year ago i was wondering what the typical cost is to build this plane? Reason i ask is i wanna get into 3D printing and making planes and experomenting but if the prints cost more in filiment than it is to just buy it in foam version than im not sure ill build full planes with it. Id probbaly print stuff to experiment with but no one seems to have answered how much filiment is used but i presume most watchinf generally have an idea but i have yet to get a printer so not sure the cost of it all filiment wise.

    • @flynbenny
      @flynbenny ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the Cub cost me around $10 in filament (including some messed up prints and a crash repair), servos at 4x $2, receiver was $20, motor and esc were $20, and the battery was $15, prop was $7. A bottle of medium CA was $10. I think that is $90 USD total. You need LWPLA, PLA, PETG, and some TPU filament on hand.
      I am printing the Hurricane now. Don't forget the value of being able to print and replace stuff you break too.

    • @DDRDK
      @DDRDK ปีที่แล้ว

      @flynbenny thanks for that, probably going to order a printer and get learning because that is very economical for planes especially like you said printing new parts if you crash is helpful. Plus I have a ton of stuff around the house I wanna do.

      @flynbenny I used to mess around with inventor back in the day but could never justify the crazy cost to own it as an individual. What does fusion 360 cost? For most simple things I'd love to be able to take off the shelf designs people have made and slightly change them but havnt found any good software to do it that doesn't cost a substantial amount of money. So my main concern is being able to make my own stuff. Regardless, I do know that there are soooo many files out there for common stuff you can download and print but my main worry in the last 5 years that kept me away is the high cost of cad software.

    Wow, great build man! I have been struggling so much trying to get my Bambu x1c to be able to print any of the models from 3dlabprint unfortunately. I wish they would come out with .3mf files that were configured correctly. Do you plan on getting that type of printer? I'm sure if you reached out to their marketing team they would send you one :) It would make the coloring of the models SO much easier I'm sure. Keep up the great work!

      You can use the 3mf files for your bambu x1c you just need to import the 3mf file and then select your physical printer from the drop down on the right side of prusa. I show it on this video if you hadn't seen it! I hope it helps. th-cam.com/video/vCMJD2DdqGY/w-d-xo.html

      @@TroyMcMillan unfortunately, I tried to use the method you suggested, but it did not work. For some reason the prusaslicer .3mf files are not compatible with the Bambu studio or orca slicer forks. Those slicers are pretty much required to run the x1c. The x1c requires an internet upload feature as well as custom .gcode from bbstudio and/or orca slicer.(due to missing a usb-interface option) I would like to see some x1c content if you can secure a machine! You seem very talented with slicers/CAD. Anyway, I will update if I figure out a fix from 3dprintlabs! so far radio silence.

    Very surprised you didn't sand it, would improve aerodynamics a lot. Nice to know it flies well without that though.

      that's one of the coolest parts about 3d printed airplanes, you can take the finish work as far as you like it to be. If you want to take it straight off the printer, or if you want to sand it, it's going to fly great either way.

    hi Troy, congratulations for your models and for your videos, your works are really very interesting. If I may, I would like to give a small suggestion, one thing that was very useful to me was sanding the surface of the model with sandpaper gradually finer and finer. consumption and aerodynamic efficiency of the model have increased greatly. You can see an example on this model (th-cam.com/video/DjOA52Slkq4/w-d-xo.html) that I designed, the video doesn't have the same quality as yours, I don't I'm so good .in case you are interested in the project I will be happy to send you all the files (for free).hi Troy and congratulations again ...
