I've been theorycrafting for decades about this, Shaman _should_ have been the first 4 spec class. 4 elements, each naturally aligned with a role; Air - Melee, Water - Healer, Fire - Caster, Earth - Tank. Even in vanilla they seemed to have some skills and abilities aligned with tanking, Rockbiter Weapon increased threat, there was some talents to boost shield block or something iirc. I actually suspect that it was intended to have a tank spec, but it was abandoned before vanilla launched.

It's why in vanilla a bunch of "Buckler" shields existed with agi on them. However, at that time. Getting avoidance mechanics to work properly proved too much of an issue. AC did work. But they hadn't quite figured out how to split class abilities from specs. So, all the AC buffs/spells/abilities those classes got would have made dps specs OP as crap. So, they scrapped them. Hell, even pallies were incomplete in vanilla. Both tanking and Ret weren't finished at launch lol.

I dream of them slowly adding a 4th (3rd and 4th for demon hunters) for all classes allowing those with only dps to tank (rogue warlock hunter) or to heal (mage) and others new options like a range paladin, or a support for deathknight think rune carver along the lines of augmentation and gladiator with shout buffs for warrior
You know what class blows my mind that it isn't in the game yet? The Artificer, I mean come on we're constantly fighting enemies that are riding mechs and fighting with gadgets. They even strongly hinted at them being a thing in BFA Island Expeditions, where you can fight against an NPC team of heroes, and all of the heroes represent different classes, but one of them you can encounter is an Artificer that rides around on a mechanical strider and throws out turrets and bubble shields. They even had us randomly discover Mechagon and add the Mecha-gnomes as a playable race. Could there have been a better time to add this class than back then? If they added them now, I imagine they'd be a DPS/Tank class that could be taken up by Alliance: Human, Dwarfs, Gnomes, Mecha-Gnomes, and Earthen. Horde: Undead, Blood Elves, Goblins, Vulpera, and Earthen. They might function kind of similar to that of a warrior, only instead of building up rage, they build up heat, which they can expend to use abilities. Maybe they could also have some sort of stacking buff that makes them have more haste/damage the higher their heat, is but comes with a downside like taking more damage.
I think I vaguely remember shamans being originally being intended to being able to tank back in prerelease. They were supposed to be a direct counterpart to the paladin when the class was faction locked.
I think one of the reasons tanks and healers are so scarce compared to dps is availability. EVERY class can be a dps, but only 6/13 can be a tank or healer. Adding more tank and healer builds could help a lot, and I think they should use SoD as an inspiration. Use choice nodes for existing specs to allow them to sacrifice damage to fill tank/healer roles for things like shaman/rogue tanks and mage healers. They can probably adapt even more ideas like assassination rogues able to trade poisons for healing mixtures and salves to become healers, etc

Makes sense to me. Earth/stone wards or whatever a shaman would call it would make the perfect protective layer for them. Kinda odd that they never went through with this. So I can definitely see them bringing in this new tank spec for Shamans.
Wouldn't be any stranger or surprising than when they made survival hunter a melee spec. Some people might that Survival was sort of a melee spec or at least could be a melee spec in vanilla.... but then you could also say that in the very early days Shamans also had some tank characteristics such as something that increased their threat.

Yes, in the follower dungeon we see Baelgrim, displayed as a Shaman, be a tank. The issue here is the fact that chononically, Baelgrim is who tells you to enter the Rookery to help fight the void touched earthern (I cant remember the actual name they are given). This essentially is a "Story Mode" dungeon where the normal rules of the game are either bent, broken, or ignored entirely. Now I will agree, they could have instead made Baelgrim a DPS and filled in with another unnamed earthern warrior as the tank, but story wise it wouldn't have fit as well. As for the xmog sets that are obtained very early on in the expansion, yes they are very Shaman-esque, but thats just because its the theme for the Earthern Stormriders. It is not a shaman-specific set. This honestly makes the set and its various appearances no more special than the fel sets we got during the Legion pre-patch event. They are sets that just go with the launch theme of the expansion to drum up hype and get people excited. As for referencing Blizzards highly generic post of "have plans for further updates that will come with a future patch" they could mean yes, Shaman tanks are coming; they could also very well mean they are just talking about new dungeons, raids, pvp maps, class reworks, tweeks/tuning, and so much more. Again, I want to reitterate that I would be stoked for a new tank class, especially shamans, but as ive stated, I feel a lot of the "hints" are just people being overly hopeful. I would love nothing more than to be proven wrong, but Blizzard has, unfortunately, a VERY long track record of getting peoples hopes up over something they never officially, or unofficially, said anything about just to squash those dreams in the mud (Im looking at you, Draenor Garrison promises...)
Not sure if its another hint but in the Chromie event where you fix past events in Silithus there is a game where you sit on different NPC characters to indicate which belong to the past. Theres a few modern models with moder animation and there is a Shaman tank npc in one of these.
I think midnight has a good opportunity to create a 3rd spec for DH. The Illidari took on the power of demons and fel in order to topple the same type of beings. It might make sense that they learn to utilize the void in midnight, especially since it's billed as the elven expansion. Ranged spec perhaps?
So far I've seen two specs that could be coming to the game. Shaman tank (I'm guessing it's going to be called Warden) and Hunter (Guessing it'll be our long wanted Tinker/Delver and basically use potions/injections for healing)
Evoker needs a tank that is Black and Red aspect. It makes the most sense for them to be the first mail wearing tank too since they have the tempered scales passive. It also makes the most sense from a lore perspective because dragons are often big beefy boss mobs.
I believe they used the season of discovery to expose the community to weird class-role combinations and other kind of features which they may include later in retail if it is well received. would love to see warlock tanks to return as well
I can't understand why they'd add that to retail. Demon Hunter exists already. I'd much prefer they add a healing spec to mage or something. Metamorphosis is a DH thing now. They removed it from Warlock for a reason. Unfortunate, but true.
@@hobosnake1 for me it doesn't even have to be the same mechanic. Its more about the idea giving more classes the possibility to fill in multiple roles. In BC was siphon life the big tanky thing. A class that tanks through sharing the HP with a pet would be a unique thing for example.
I tanked with my shaman in BC and WotlK. Shamans have got at this time a weapon buff for generate Aggro and in the old skill tree are several points for defense stats etc.
Instead of tank they should have turned enhance to actual enhance that enhances itself and others with totems and weapon imbues so we could get another support style spec in the game. And turn arcane mage into tank spec that uses either mirror images, barriers and debuffs at medium range (image is the one tanking and splits dmg taken with mage and mage swaps the position with image when image is starting to fade (too much dmg) or when mage needs to reposition the target. But mage can't survive too long without image (image will evocate while not tanking because mana is the thing that keeps image alive and every hit taken takes % portion of mana from image) that would be unique and interesting tanking concept that rely on being "ranged" tank and "pet" tank (pet cannot be controlled and disappears when combat ends). Another tanking idea would be that arcane uses barriers and images (reduce dmg taking or swaps with image on active use so that image takes big hit and dies) and instead of casting most boring skill named Arcane Blast, they either summon levitating arcane weaponry/shields and use skills to hold aggro or they turn staff/wand into something like sword and board when in combat and use arcane melee range skills that also cause arcane explosions. Shaman tanks are cool and all but after all these years classic (yes shaman can tank fine in classic wow), discovery and pirate servers have had Shaman tanks so they don't feel anything new. Also knowing Blizz they will make Shaman tank to be just same as any other tank = do dmg and forget that you are even tank because there is like 1 or 2 skills that needs some thinking when it comes to tanking on like 2 classes (Brewmaster Stagger purging and CD tracking and Blood DK selfhealing usage and needed resource management/timing). Rest of tanks just press dmg skills and have macroed defensives in those dmg skills or spam the "reduce dmg" button that barely even looks like anything compared to the dmg skills (good example are warriors and druids, all you do is spam dmg and keep up dmg reduction/s that do not even show unless you look at your buffs/have WA for it). Shaman is gonna be just like that... Press button to do dmg in melee and have passive dmg reduction that happens because you press dmg buttons and maybe 1 way to reduce dmg for a moment like a totem (that atleast can be seen). Tanking simply is not fun because it's literally dpsing but losing when looking at damage meters. It should be about 90% of positioning and active use of defensives / evades depending on what the enemy does. Like Aug Evoker have their own damage meter style that tracks the "support" part of their rotation, it makes the class interesting and unique even tho they basically just do dmg too. Tanks should also be "rewarded" with dmg reductions by active skill usage and there should be night and day difference between tank that just spams dmg skills and tank that knows when to reduce dmg taken/shield team mates and control the enemy position correctly.
What i want is warriors becoming supporting c Dps class. Bringing in banners and more shouts to assist your ally's damage. Like guild wars 2's warrior...
I tanked as a shaman in wotlk and had a blast. Always hoped blizzard would get behind the idea, because I love shamans but also tanking, and I know I'm not the only one.
I feel like theres potential for hero classes to modify a specs role, like certain runes do in season of discovery. i can't see them changing them up like that mid expansion though, but maybe in midnight.

Here is the thing. Shamans could off tank in classic and they are tanks in season of discovery. Blizzard also wanted to bring tank shamans in cata, but scrapped the idea. They said in the last year blizzcon, that in the next addon the midnight, they making 3 huge dreams come true. The 3 things i know, that the playerbase wanted, was 1. Player housing 2. New speccs for all classes like everyone got 4 like druids and there a lot of fan made in the forums like tank shaman or second tank specc for warri, range caster for paladin and priest, who use holy magic to punish enemies and the list goes on. 3. Class skins like how warlock got green fire
As nice as that would be, I think this isn't anything different from what FFXIV does, using Gosetsu, a Samurai to be the tank in your NPC party. It's just a way to keep the story NPCs involved with what goes on inside dungeons
Back in Vanilla Shamans could tank and heal and support all the same time with their totems I remember running quite a few dungeons with shaman tanks and it went very well and then one day it just disappeared.
Ahhhh this brings back memories... for all the yung'n in the chat, enhancement tank used to be a thing in vanilla and they tried to bring it back at some point, i wanna say Cata maybe, whenever they gave taunt and the threat melee enhancing spell back to it. tank was never good, was mostly just for trolling pvp, 1 shotting people and never dying. also they deffs should bring it back but actually viable of course, should just be Enhancement (tank) and (dps) for specs

Well they could also try Demonology Tank, Instead of you summoning minions you take the form of them. Kinda like a druid. Felguard or void walker for tanks. Or you remember the old Metamorphosis (warlock ability) That form. If i don't remember wrong during WoD, That form was very tanky but it lacked the ability to really tank.
I'd love to see it but I've seen Ion on mulitiple posts and interviews complain about druid having 4 specs and how it's so hard to balance. So I'm not holding my breath unless Metzen really pushes it. Which he might because people were pretty vocal about getting aug and not a tank spec for evokers.
I got early access and as soon as I did the rookery I noticed the tank was a shaman. My first thought was blizzard is looking at a mail tank if not this expansion then the next.
My only concern with this is that a 4 spec class makes the talent tree fucking garbage (Druid) and caused you to take shit nodes that do nothing for you in all 4 specs which feels awful.
Reminder that there are 6 elements in WoW, not 4. I'd rather they make a showing on how decay works into the natural order alongside the other elements as they have only shown bad guys using it so far. As far as Shaman tank, not gonna happen. You can look at elements and think "you can make a tank out of that" but a Shaman is more than that. You reeeally don't want to start mixing tanking mechanics with totem mechanics.
Could basically tank in DF with my shammy , and crit monsters, I roll 2 tanks atm in WWN and wouldn’t have an issue tanking with a shaman at this point , just seems logical.
Next class is Tinker. Two specs: tank and dps. Available for gnomes, mechagnomes, goblins and vulperas. It will have overheating mechanics and you will be able to exit the mech like DVa from Overwatch. Trust me, I am certified Blizzard leaker 😂

If I could channel into getting an elemental to act as a body suit I'd play it. Sham can already give himself a buff. Let his eyes glow red, and control fire / wind with his entire body. Steep ask, but doable.
I don't see them introducing shaman Tank in the war within due to the hero talents, redistributin the talents around by adding a fourth spec seems uncertain.

Don't think it will. The only spec that ever received a full relaunch was Survival because it Blizzard just couldn't make it stand out from Marksmanship enough as a second dedicated archer spec. Enhancement is a perfectly healthy spec as far as identity and gameplay goes so I see no reason to remove it and an earth-based shaman tank isn't going to thematically intrude into the lightning- and fire themed Enhancement spec either. At most Enh will lose Sunder and Ele will lose Earthquake.
Always thought shaman tank spec should exist. They wear mail, shields and they may have a play style like building stacks of earthen armor, self heal like all shamans do, get aggro and defensives with totems. I mean a lot can go on with this idea
Used to be around buffing your teammates with weapon buffs and then supporting the group further with totems. Worked very well matter of fact it was the best tank in the game for a while till they nerfed the concept.
Will blizzard finally break its 1# rule for tanks? A tank that can lust and wears mail? Until i see it i won't believe it. They would atleast have to get rid of its bloodlust ability. For these 2 reasons i knew from the start that aug evokers werent tanks. If shamans became tanks it would reduce the chance of picking a mage, evoker, hunter for lust when you have a tank that can do it. If they do make shamans tanks then evoker and hunter are next

This idea has been knocking around since Vanilla, when Pallys were Alliance only, and Shaman were Horde only.

Evoker needs a tank that is Black and Red aspect. It makes the most sense for them to be the first mail wearing tank too since they have the tempered scales passive.
It also makes the most sense from a lore perspective because dragons are often big beefy boss mobs.
Shamean would be nice to get a tank and with it it’s final earth elemental ascendance form 😂

I believe they used the season of discovery to expose the community to weird class-role combinations and other kind of features which they may include later in retail if it is well received. would love to see warlock tanks to return as well
I can't understand why they'd add that to retail. Demon Hunter exists already. I'd much prefer they add a healing spec to mage or something. Metamorphosis is a DH thing now. They removed it from Warlock for a reason. Unfortunate, but true.
@@hobosnake1 for me it doesn't even have to be the same mechanic. Its more about the idea giving more classes the possibility to fill in multiple roles. In BC was siphon life the big tanky thing. A class that tanks through sharing the HP with a pet would be a unique thing for example.
Shaman tanking in s1/s2 of SoD was peak wow in 20 yrs for me
I would like for shaman tanks to be playable.
I tanked with my shaman in BC and WotlK. Shamans have got at this time a weapon buff for generate Aggro and in the old skill tree are several points for defense stats etc.
Instead of tank they should have turned enhance to actual enhance that enhances itself and others with totems and weapon imbues so we could get another support style spec in the game.
And turn arcane mage into tank spec that uses either mirror images, barriers and debuffs at medium range (image is the one tanking and splits dmg taken with mage and mage swaps the position with image when image is starting to fade (too much dmg) or when mage needs to reposition the target. But mage can't survive too long without image (image will evocate while not tanking because mana is the thing that keeps image alive and every hit taken takes % portion of mana from image) that would be unique and interesting tanking concept that rely on being "ranged" tank and "pet" tank (pet cannot be controlled and disappears when combat ends).
Another tanking idea would be that arcane uses barriers and images (reduce dmg taking or swaps with image on active use so that image takes big hit and dies) and instead of casting most boring skill named Arcane Blast, they either summon levitating arcane weaponry/shields and use skills to hold aggro or they turn staff/wand into something like sword and board when in combat and use arcane melee range skills that also cause arcane explosions.
Shaman tanks are cool and all but after all these years classic (yes shaman can tank fine in classic wow), discovery and pirate servers have had Shaman tanks so they don't feel anything new. Also knowing Blizz they will make Shaman tank to be just same as any other tank = do dmg and forget that you are even tank because there is like 1 or 2 skills that needs some thinking when it comes to tanking on like 2 classes (Brewmaster Stagger purging and CD tracking and Blood DK selfhealing usage and needed resource management/timing). Rest of tanks just press dmg skills and have macroed defensives in those dmg skills or spam the "reduce dmg" button that barely even looks like anything compared to the dmg skills (good example are warriors and druids, all you do is spam dmg and keep up dmg reduction/s that do not even show unless you look at your buffs/have WA for it).
Shaman is gonna be just like that... Press button to do dmg in melee and have passive dmg reduction that happens because you press dmg buttons and maybe 1 way to reduce dmg for a moment like a totem (that atleast can be seen). Tanking simply is not fun because it's literally dpsing but losing when looking at damage meters. It should be about 90% of positioning and active use of defensives / evades depending on what the enemy does.
Like Aug Evoker have their own damage meter style that tracks the "support" part of their rotation, it makes the class interesting and unique even tho they basically just do dmg too. Tanks should also be "rewarded" with dmg reductions by active skill usage and there should be night and day difference between tank that just spams dmg skills and tank that knows when to reduce dmg taken/shield team mates and control the enemy position correctly.

I tanked as a shaman in wotlk and had a blast. Always hoped blizzard would get behind the idea, because I love shamans but also tanking, and I know I'm not the only one.
I feel like theres potential for hero classes to modify a specs role, like certain runes do in season of discovery. i can't see them changing them up like that mid expansion though, but maybe in midnight.
I just want them to make like a hunter tank spec with the spec and such. Being a beefy boy with a bear or something

Here is the thing. Shamans could off tank in classic and they are tanks in season of discovery. Blizzard also wanted to bring tank shamans in cata, but scrapped the idea. They said in the last year blizzcon, that in the next addon the midnight, they making 3 huge dreams come true. The 3 things i know, that the playerbase wanted, was 1. Player housing 2. New speccs for all classes like everyone got 4 like druids and there a lot of fan made in the forums like tank shaman or second tank specc for warri, range caster for paladin and priest, who use holy magic to punish enemies and the list goes on. 3. Class skins like how warlock got green fire
When the patch hits for the 20th anniversary Dracthyr will be able to be warriors. That's a guarantee.
If we go this route then there needs to be a light casting paladin DPS. Would be so sick.
As nice as that would be, I think this isn't anything different from what FFXIV does, using Gosetsu, a Samurai to be the tank in your NPC party. It's just a way to keep the story NPCs involved with what goes on inside dungeons
If druids can have 4 specs then shamans should be able to as well. Would love to play a shaman tank!
Back in Vanilla Shamans could tank and heal and support all the same time with their totems I remember running quite a few dungeons with shaman tanks and it went very well and then one day it just disappeared.

Ahhhh this brings back memories... for all the yung'n in the chat, enhancement tank used to be a thing in vanilla and they tried to bring it back at some point, i wanna say Cata maybe, whenever they gave taunt and the threat melee enhancing spell back to it. tank was never good, was mostly just for trolling pvp, 1 shotting people and never dying. also they deffs should bring it back but actually viable of course, should just be Enhancement (tank) and (dps) for specs

If they add new specs they have to be support specs to offset the aug meta.
Well they could also try Demonology Tank, Instead of you summoning minions you take the form of them. Kinda like a druid. Felguard or void walker for tanks. Or you remember the old Metamorphosis (warlock ability) That form. If i don't remember wrong during WoD, That form was very tanky but it lacked the ability to really tank.
And there was Glyph of Demon Hunter, which allowed you to tank, which they took off us to create actual Demon Hunters

I'd love to see it but I've seen Ion on mulitiple posts and interviews complain about druid having 4 specs and how it's so hard to balance. So I'm not holding my breath unless Metzen really pushes it. Which he might because people were pretty vocal about getting aug and not a tank spec for evokers.
I got early access and as soon as I did the rookery I noticed the tank was a shaman. My first thought was blizzard is looking at a mail tank if not this expansion then the next.
Noticed this in the first 5 seconds and even told my wife, shaman tanks wtf!

My only concern with this is that a 4 spec class makes the talent tree fucking garbage (Druid) and caused you to take shit nodes that do nothing for you in all 4 specs which feels awful.
Been saying this for 10 years at least. Earth shaman tank should have been a thing from scratch.
Reminder that there are 6 elements in WoW, not 4. I'd rather they make a showing on how decay works into the natural order alongside the other elements as they have only shown bad guys using it so far. As far as Shaman tank, not gonna happen. You can look at elements and think "you can make a tank out of that" but a Shaman is more than that. You reeeally don't want to start mixing tanking mechanics with totem mechanics.

Could basically tank in DF with my shammy , and crit monsters, I roll 2 tanks atm in WWN and wouldn’t have an issue tanking with a shaman at this point , just seems logical.

Next class is Tinker. Two specs: tank and dps. Available for gnomes, mechagnomes, goblins and vulperas. It will have overheating mechanics and you will be able to exit the mech like DVa from Overwatch. Trust me, I am certified Blizzard leaker 😂

No, there will be no shaman tanks, this is not a missed concept, it is the follower dungeon and if you notice, the NPC that is the "shaman tank" is dead.
If I could channel into getting an elemental to act as a body suit I'd play it. Sham can already give himself a buff. Let his eyes glow red, and control fire / wind with his entire body. Steep ask, but doable.

Actually I disagree as the Vanilla shaman tanks were built around Totems and Totemic already exists it would fit perfectly.

Don't think it will. The only spec that ever received a full relaunch was Survival because it Blizzard just couldn't make it stand out from Marksmanship enough as a second dedicated archer spec. Enhancement is a perfectly healthy spec as far as identity and gameplay goes so I see no reason to remove it and an earth-based shaman tank isn't going to thematically intrude into the lightning- and fire themed Enhancement spec either. At most Enh will lose Sunder and Ele will lose Earthquake.

Always thought shaman tank spec should exist. They wear mail, shields and they may have a play style like building stacks of earthen armor, self heal like all shamans do, get aggro and defensives with totems. I mean a lot can go on with this idea
How would it work
Used to be around buffing your teammates with weapon buffs and then supporting the group further with totems. Worked very well matter of fact it was the best tank in the game for a while till they nerfed the concept.

Will blizzard finally break its 1# rule for tanks? A tank that can lust and wears mail? Until i see it i won't believe it. They would atleast have to get rid of its bloodlust ability. For these 2 reasons i knew from the start that aug evokers werent tanks. If shamans became tanks it would reduce the chance of picking a mage, evoker, hunter for lust when you have a tank that can do it. If they do make shamans tanks then evoker and hunter are next

we need new everything, a new tank, a new healer, a new form of DPS. and a 4th spec for each class. druids get nothing because they already have everything, demon hunters get nothing. because what else do they need? turn outlaw rogue into a dodge tank, cause im tired of the swashbuckling gun toting BS they keep nerfing into the ground everytime it starts to take off. if they wont let me do big damage then let my blade flurry aoe uncap and go full dodge Main Gauche spec.
