Although both the words are often used interchangeably, yet we can mark a minute difference between the two. Every author can be called a writer but every writer can not be called an author. For example you write a letter for me, so you're the writer of that letter but I will not use the word author for you. Shakespeare is the author of 'Hamlet' but I can call him the writer also of that drama. 'Author' has a more literary and authoritative connotations. An author has published work but a writer may not have published work. An author has the copyright ©️ generally but a writer may or may not have it. Still I would like to say that these differences are not essential.
