    They really should have done away with some of the maps tho.. all the desert and swamp. Fuck that desert fortress with the archers especially. Honestly I think echoes is worth going through once if nothing else but it's not offering much for any subsequent playthroughs for me at least.

    I do hope that when they remake another game they take effort into more gameplay improvements and reinterpretations as well as presentation - Geneaology with an optional revamped mode (since a lot of the classic fe4 unbalance is pretty fun but it'd be fun to see a new take as well) or FE6 with the improvements to weapons and reinforcements that FE7 made (not counting 2x weapon effectiveness) would be great along with all the new bells and whistles
    Also y'know no premonitions

    Hey, we all have opinions and we can agree in some things and disagree in some others.
    Personally, I like the combination of story and gameplay. It is really tricky to achieve it but Echoes did a way better job than both Awakening and Fates in that part.
    For example, I LOVE Genealogy and the way the chapters were actually parts of the world map and how it felt like an actual war.
    Echoes, took a game that has NOT aged well, brought ALL of the gameplay aspects of that era, added a couple, and made the story and the presentation of it WAY BETTER. That is a big YES for me. That is what I want from a game of this genre. And I am totally OK if some1 disagrees because I would probably disagree with their opinion on something else.
    Out of the 3DS games for me, Echoes is rated first, Awakening second and Fates dead last for obvious reasons.
    P.s.: What you mentioned about the Falchion scene that is presented to us, and actually happening later into the game, is something that happens in other media as well, like TV Series and movies, and is often used to pique the interest of the viewers. You might not like it but A LOT of them use it nowadays and it actually appeals to MANY people.

    I always found it strange how much people were willing to overlook its glaring flaws and brush them off with "well, it's a remake/at least it's a real FE." It's not a bad game, but a lot of the game is like playing through Valla except with infinitely spawning enemies and skirmishes which add nothing to the experience except pained sighs.
    To continue the meme, Padding Emblem is a pretty good title.

It's story was fine, but with less supports and switching between the stories the only reason I was really invested at all was because of the Voice Acting, I'll take Awakening or Conquest any day.

    How Echoes would go from being a very good game, to one of the best games.
    1: Better map design
    2: Less random encounters
    3: A few extra supports
    4: A Lunatic difficulty with restrictions on Mila’s Turnwheel
    Aside from that, it is probably in my top 3, only after Conquest and Binding Blade in terms of how much I enjoyed it.

    • @MogofWar
      @MogofWar 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Redoing fatigue. Either have it carry over in the over world or do away with it entirely. Having it reset upon leaving dungeons trivialized the mechanic. Stat debuffs probably also need more tiers than just a 50% reduction. The developers clearly intended more of this at first but decided it got in the way. But if fatigue carried over into the over world, perhaps sinking slowly, people would not hoard as many food items or would visit the shrines more...
      More in line with the turn wheel being reworked, if the regeneration of turn wheel uses didn't happen in the over world, and aside from the long rests at the end of each act, Drink offerings at the shrine are the only way to regenerate it... Then the Turnwheel would be more balanced. Beyond that, If I had been designing Turnwheel mechanics I'd have more uses than just rewinding a battle. With if Turnwheel uses did not reset, perhaps have an over world function of reversing overworld moves between battles but at the cost of one move per turn. And also have accessing DLC cost Turnwheel uses. You know so that the free weapons and items players get for essentially playing a green units in a garden chapter, don't essentially come for free. Then again, might just be over thinking it.

    But really, at the end of the day, I really like Gaiden's place in the fire emblem franchise, especially before Echoes existed, it's such a damn unique and interesting game with it's own personal charm, so I feel conflicted Echoes exists as that makes Gaiden's lone spot no longer, but at the same time it is great to see the masterpiece updated with new cool shit.

    If we're gonna talk about premonition scenes, technically Radiant Dawn had some big spoilers in the intro cutscene, since it's literally just playing blue-washed clips from every cutscene in the game, including Ashera's awakening. The player just has no concept of what they're seeing at the time.
    I could have done without the premonitions, honestly, and while you can find a lot of good plot in Celica's journey (as seen by Ghast's support science), frankly even I felt the "trust in Falchion" scene was stupid and forced when I played it, and I usually have a high tolerance for those types of things.
    My biggest question for you is what you think of the forging system. Did you enjoy it, or not? Did you look up what weapons can be turned into what, or go in blind? I really liked the fact that you had to work with effectively-limited resources, so that even if weapons are infinite-use, you still only have a handful of weapons to work with, so you need to figure out who gets what. That is, unless you have the DLC, which ruins all of that thoughtful balance and just gives you everything you could ever want.

    • @Mekkkah
      @Mekkkah  5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think you get more intro imagery unlocked as you process into the game. I know the BK scene isn't unlocked initially. But I'm not sure on the specifics. And I do think first timers not knowing what they're seeing is a fine excuse to show certain things, that's why a shot of Ashera is acceptable but one of BK fighting is not.
      I knew Killer Bow existed and at some point I looked it up. I like that they tried something different with forging weapons, but I don't think this is the way to go from here on out. Gathering gold and silver is an annoying process so instead you tend to turn towards selling items. But as a blind player you have no clue which items might be useful later and which items are needed for sidequests so you should be kinda scared on what to sell. I forged some random things but I had no idea what was optimal.

    Narratively Alm's story is much better than celica's story, sadly celica has a much less developed character arc than alm. Maps and enemies spawns in the dungeon are really bland sometimes. But that's all fixed for how amazing the voice acting is, which is probably the only thing I was really playing echoes for. The voice acting reminds me of snake eater, the dialouge is funny, characters are really endearing, and the overall message about the story is probably the strongest part about the story. I give it a 7/10.

    This game would have bombed so freaking hard had it not been for it's production and budget. They did very little to fix Gaiden but focused on the only thing that kept people from playing it: It's an old NES Game. For that, it's worth to play, but goddamn, this game is just too blunt.

  • @Expa0

    I enjoyed SoV a lot, though admittedly a lot of it was also tied to being able to play without the pair-up feature once again, or having to calculate debuffs/skills and whatever for every single battle, which does fall into the category of "it could be worse". Of course the map design is bad and the gameplay is a bit too simple because of that for the most part, but it is also kind of charming in a way at points.
    The presentation both art and sound wise is superb and the story and dialogue, while simple get the job done and ooze of charm. It's probably not a game that I'm going to return to very often but I really am glad I experienced it as well. I really feel like I should play OG Gaiden at some point too though just to experience what the original was like.

    Basically almost everything that you can hate about Echoes (map design, balance) can be explained as the game being more faithful to the original game that it should have ever been. That doesn't necessary include story complaints, but I think that there is a lot more good than bad in the overall plot (the dialogues were really enjoyable throughout and the voice acting helped a lot too!).
    I love the game to bits, there's so much charm and love put into it that I cannot help but be drawn to it. However, I find criticism like yours to be perfectly reasonable, and I hope that IS can find a good balance between good map design/gameplay and charming aesthetics for future games. Also, they should probably take more risks with future remakes, but I guess that didn't pay off well with the DS games.

    tbh, i found it kinda meh. fun the first half, then a slog. I have one file that has over 100 hours of grind on it, because i bought the season pass (worth, if you enjoy the game) the dlc classes are op as hell, but look really cool. I started the game the second time, and used only my units that were mercenaries, so i could constantly roll them back to villager, and continue the lvling. i used these units to go through the starlight dungeons (idk what they are called) and until i had (i think) around 6 starsphere's and then grinded all my units with starspheres equipped, until at last, every unit was a dlc class, at max level, without skipping any levels. It was tedious as ****ing hell, but worth, just so i could steamroll the entire game, and oneshot almost every enemy. also, the game is seriously p2w ;)

    As someone newer to the franchise (For reference, I've played Fates, Awakening, Echoes, and FE7&8) I absolutely adore Echoes. Looking back, the premonition was very unnecessary. It not being there might've even made me more invested in Celica. Alm's army remains the game's highlight for me.
    While the game could serve to be much better, the change in combat was very refreshing. Fates and Awakening had grown to be a slog because of how repetitive they were for me, though I remain happy with the GBA games.

    I don't recomande it the only good parth of the post game is there a section in the other tower that you fight useing only alm and it kinda badass to use only him you kinda have to use terrain and all it really fun and chalangeing I don't know what lvl you play the game but even on Normal IT was pretty hard (tho my Alm didn't had his Royal sword max lvl and his lvl wasn't the highest yet but stil it was really fun so If you do the tower only do that parth tho I think is about right in the midle of the tower... :( So it a long grind of boring stuff to get there.)

    I have one piece of advice about Thabes Labyrinth: You won’t be going in circles at all. The path options are mostly just “go left or go right” without any other branches at all. Your choice either goes to treasure or the next area. There are some dead ends without treasure, but they do have something that’s worth taking a looking at.
    Also, what did you think of the attack animation that plays when you defeat Duma (unless you got the kill with Scendscale)

    I actually quite liked Thabes given how starved I was for challenge for most of the game and it can be fun to replay the game with Thabes and its boss as an end goal in mind as opposed to just Duma Tower (which is substantially more tedious imo). I also really like Alm Part 4 but otherwise I agree that the good parts of this game are in the beginning. I haven't played the original Gaiden so I dont really have a good comparison point for how this game "should've" been or if it was better or worse. It and FE1 are the only FE games I haven't played and probably dont have any plans to since they're just too aged for my taste compared to their remakes and I simply have a hard time swallowing that either game has anything substantial over their respective remakes, but I've heard opinions to the contrary so who knows.

  • @MrCactuar13
    @MrCactuar13 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think all of Gaiden's Act 4 and beyond map issues could be resolved if route wasn't the only objective. If Kill the Boss or Seize were objectives then at least dumb chapters like Nuibaba's Abode and that one quake mansion in Celica's route would be so much more tolerable.

  • @tinchosabala
    @tinchosabala 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have to say something here.
    I prefer the first 5 games to the rest. And no, not because I think everything else is shit, quite the contrary. And I wasn’t even born until after FE7, so I didn’t grow up with them. So, why?
    It’s not because I think the gameplay is better, or map design, or anything. At least not when it comes to them as a game. But as a story.
    They don’t have nearly as much dialogue or anything as the rest of the games, or characterization. But that helps. What I feel is that these games feel much more natural than the last ones. They aren’t designed to give the best experience as a _game_, but as a story, it’s wonderful. I just cannot explain it, but play FE6, and analyze the dialogue and story. Then play FE7. Even if you did, to refresh. You will probably see that FE6 feels much more....real. It feels as a fight that you are trying your hardest to win, not an already made script, that you kind of know how it happens, or you know you are supposed to win, because you are the good guys, but in the older ones, the baddies aren’t as bad, and the story isn’t as...linear, I guess. It FEELS like a journey, and you don’t necessarily know what is going to happen.
    Alright, I didn’t explain myself well, but play the first 6 games, maybe skip the first two if you want, and I hope that you’ll see what I mean.
    And, completely unrelated matter, the final battle in Gaiden/Echoes is freaking great.
    Right, so I have a better way to explain it with something Kaga said. He said that Marth isn’t necessarily the main character of the story. The lack of dialogue allows every character to have the same amount of importance. This doesn’t happen in FE4, 5 and 6, but they still have a Si,Olaf atmosphere. The story is _maleable_. The amount of dialogue the lords have in the rest of the games make them a little bit more boring in my opinion, as weird as it sounds. Look at Void’s Blitzarre Adventure. It’s kind of the same, except that there is no world, but I’ll get into that later. If you want to, the protagonist of Gaiden might as well be Zeke. Or Kliff. Or Gray. Each character, at least for me, felt more...real. Like, what actually mattered in the story was what happened in the battles, not in the dialogues. The story is told through each enemy killed, each lucky dodge, each death and every critical. The dialogue is just for context. It’s quite literally “Show, don’t tell”. Now, what’s good about FE4, 5 and 6 is the world. Each country has more characteristics than in other games. Thracia is pretty well developed, as the south and the north can’t flourish without co-existing, and they can’t quite reach that, and that’s their problem. In FE6, Etruria is your ally, but not really, and the plots between the Lycian nobles and everything that happens, it makes everything feel more real, like there’s a world that exists outside of what the stupid color-headed lord has to say about how bad it feels to kill people.

    it is important saying that people enjoy the game, for some weird reason japan didn't like it but the rest of the world kinda did. maybe because the rest of the world did not have gaiden, or maybe japan audience has changed.

  • @Maid_of_Spiders
    @Maid_of_Spiders 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree the map design is bad but I think that is a fault for original gaiden and I commend IS for keeping it the same even if it is antiquated. I think Mila's turnwheen was implemented almost specifically to remedy the tedium of most maps but that's just speculation. Personally i really enjoyed the falchion scene, my thought process was "whoa! this is cool, i wonder how it got to that point. what could the context be? what has changed?" etc but that's just me. Admittedly I had never played gaiden before echoes but I can tell a lot of work went into polishing the game from the music, visuals, gameplay, and quality of life. I will admit that i disagree with you on your stance of criticism. I feel like criticizing a games every minor shortcoming just feels entitled, especially when the overall package is impressive or even good. This applies to any other media I consume as well. I'll admit I have a strong suspension of disbelief but if a piece of media does things more well than not I see no reason to complain. I reserve criticism for media that does more wrong than right, when you criticize an overall good product it just sounds nit picky to me, like you have to find something to complain about and nothing is ever good enough. This isn't a dig at you specifically either, it's a pet peeve watching anybody being overly critical at what i would call a well made piece of media. I do however respect your opinion even if we differ, especially knowing you as a level headed fire emblem youtuber and longtime fan. Overall i'm glad you enjoyed the game, I certainly did.

    I'll be honest, kinda wish Celica's death was something that could be affected by your actions as Alm. Like, if you went out of your way to subdue her in combat as opposed to just watching a cutscene, that's the only way she wouldn't die in that cutscene. Alternatively, what if instead Saber or Conrad had to fight upwards out of Duma Tower to reach Celica before Jedah does the evil priest thing, and if either was dead, you couldn't save her? Celica's story just seems rushed.

    I honestly loved this game. Was so much better than fates for me. Just loved the characters and how everything was voice acted. Loved the music and art. Loved exploring the dungeons - that should be a staple. It does have a bit of a lull as the game goes on, but I still wanted to find out what happens story-wise. I really can't criticize the game too much. It was one of my favourite games the year it came out.

    I agree with a lot of these points, especially the dungeons not feeling fun. I tried to avoid battles there too. And yeah, map design was trash since it was literally 1 for 1 from Gaiden (though some were "ok" I think).
    I will say, personally I can overlook so-so gameplay if the narrative is really compelling. So these things didn't bother me *too* much since I was enjoying the hell out of the story and characters and writing. But of course, everyone is gonna have different opinions on that :)

The map design is pretty bland with nothing to really spice it and up and those stupid desert maps and even the finall boss map i hated despite the great music, the skills system was a great addition really made me feel awesome when using them because of the animation and the raw power of them. • @zachataxxii7126
      @zachataxxii7126 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Berkut is exactly what Doca said, but I did wish the battles with him were more difficult. Also, Rinea being more involved would've been nice.
      Fernand makes me believe that the premonition should've been replaced with the Rise of the Deliverance because it gives more background on him especially. Hell, you could've had the DLC story following him, Berkut, & Rinea or something like that because he doesn't really do much in the main story.
      Jedah would've been saved if he wasn't so obviously evil. Should've made him more subtle & possibly helping Celica indirectly to gain her trust. Not only that, how cool would've it been had the interactions with him changing if you recruited Sonya or not (Maybe even to the point where you would only face Jedah at the swamp if you saved Sonya because she knows he can't be trusted, while it would've been avoided if Deen was brought along)?
      Desaix was very bland. Given how horrible a king Lima was, making him an extremist trying to destroy Rigel would have been not too bad, maybe even being a good foil to Alm. Also, for those that didn't play Gaiden, I think he's final words should've been more vague in order to hide Alm's true identity (Actually, how did he know who Alm really was?).
      I actually liked Slayde, even if it's just because of his lines & voice actor. I liked the idea of him being a recurring mini-boss in Alm's chapters, getting stronger after each battle until you confront him before Rudolf.
      Grieth is the same as Jedah, except replace "subtlety" with "an actual threat." He was a joke villain in a role where he really should not have been one. Following the Gaiden manga's lead and having an event where he kills Deen or Sonya (whoever you didn't recruit) would've been a good start.
      And that's all the ones I had ideas for. While I liked the story for this game (moreso after watching Ghast's videos on it), there was a ton of wasted potential, and the villains are the best example of that, especially with how many of them were filler throwaways.

    • @emmetth3726

    • @Tenoreyumik
      @Tenoreyumik 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same here. The story is mediocre at best, it feels like it was written without any idea of what an end goal should be. There was a theme of "you don't have to be a noble to be a good leader" with Alm at the start...until it was revealed he was a noble all along. Or the whole theme of forgiveness between Berkut and Rinea, yet it was executed poorly so it seemed like Rinea forgive Berkut for killing her just because she felt guilty she "couldn't save him". Oof
      I would've point out more examples, but I think that's enough for now. Just because Echoes story is better than Fates doesn't make it good is what I'm saying.
