Henry Cowell (1897-1965) was an Irish-American composer who greatly influenced the experimental music of the 20th century. He is renowned as a pioneer of special piano techniques, such as the tone cluster technique he invented in his early piano works. He is also well known as a teacher of John Cage. "The Banshee" is a piece that uses an internal technique in which the piano strings are plucked directly. The work effectively expresses the haunting and mysterious cries of the Banshee, a female fairy from Ireland and other countries. (Written by Maya Kawasaki)
ヘンリー・カウエル(1897〜1965)は 20 世紀の実験的な音楽語法に大きな影響をもたらしたアイルランド系アメリカ人作曲家である。初期のピアノ作品においてトーン・クラスター奏法を考案するなど、ピアノ特殊奏法の先駆者として名を馳せた。ジョン・ケージの師としても著名。《バンシー》は曲全体を通してピアノの弦を直接はじく内部奏法が用いられている。バンシー(アイルランドなどに伝わる女妖精)の妖しげで神秘的な叫び声が効果的に表現された作品。(川崎記)
