  • When I made this video it wasn't even out, but I pieced together all of the information we knew about it building up to its launch in the hope of capturing what it felt like to be almost there... but not quite. Here, I cover its story, from announcement up until a few weeks before official benchmarks.
0:07 - Vega on the roadmaps, speculation about announcement
    2:04 - Pre-announcement framerates and information

    4:23 - Responses to announcement

Hoping that this video will get people up to date with the situation and that it will be interesting to look back in in the future, when things have long moved on. I've tried my best to be factual though I also share my hate of fanboys from both sides on a number of my videos as I thought it was quite a big part of the Vega story to date. In short: see this video as entertainment, and follow up on the references below if you want to learn more.

Waiting for benchmarks... I'm eyeing a Sapphire version using it with my 3 FHD Eyefinity Setup... And I certainly would use Chill as I am fine with 60FPS.
However if Vega hardcore flops still(I expected ~1080 performance) I might as well wait for Volta if it will hit... still hate NvidiaSurround to death tho.

The only difference that I see between NVIDIA and INTEL regarding how they have pursued their market dominance.
Intel did not focus on innovation (regarding how consumers think)
And became egoistic about their dominance and controlled the monopoly way too much. Just went after the cash.
NVIDIA on the other hand, though controlled a lot of monopoly on the higher ground, they actually make sure that the R&D is worth it. That the cost you pay, actually gives you a jump in performance.
Just look at how the 10 series changed how mobile gaming was. A last gen 960M was being soundly beaten by a 1050ti.
That's why I feel, Vega is good, but it won't pull off a Ryzen like comeback or grab eyeballs.
    Threadripper would...Coz again INTEL

I switched from AMD to NVidia because I wanted to upgrade and they didn't have anything to compete with the 1080 so I ended up getting it, the few frames between the two don't matter, what I say as a AMD lover, If its cheaper and gets close or around the same Performance why not get it?

The problem here is that Vega should have been released last year in may-june along with Polaris to stand a chance against Pascal. If Vega comes out and offers the same price/performance ratio as Pascal I don't see how it can be that successful. And who knows when Volta will be released and bring GTX 1080 ti performance with a $400 pricetag. All I'm saying is that I think Vega is too little, too late.

    • @jeffreyhramika8603
      @jeffreyhramika8603 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

How is that a problem when it is released? You think since you and a small handful of others got their 1080 or 1080 ti there is no one else left for an upgrade to a better GPU in the world? Step out of your shoes and think.

    • @SpankeyMcCheeks
      @SpankeyMcCheeks 7 ปีที่แล้ว

It's not that there arent a market for these cards, it's just that AMD is a whole year and 2 months behind Nvidia in terms of performance at this point. And there's not much incentive to get an RX Vega over a GTX 1080 when both cost the same and perform the same. And as I said, Volta could be just behind the corner. Nvidia has made a habit of releasing new GPU lineups every 18 or so months and since Pascal was released in May 2016, an October 2017 release for Volta wouldn't be far fetched.

    • @xxianma

When did I act like that?

    • @casualpro4772
      @casualpro4772 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Oscar Eriksson Yep, so much time for a lineup that doesn't even match the 1080ti, consumes more power and is the exact same price as the Nvidia counterpart while they had over a year more to prepare.
In the gpu market, AMD's competition is actually rather competitive. Even though they also result to anti-consumer methods and many times over just win over AMD just because most games are better optimized for Nvidia, they at least knew to reduce their prices a few months before Vega.
In the CPU market, AMD is lucky (well, not really, but, you know) because AMD made better CPUs many times over in history, but rather than trying fairplay, Intel did some of the most anti-competitive you can find. They have bribed more tech companies than they have CPUs worth buying, and that is coming back to them, because AMD is doing really well with Ryzen, and all Intel can do is release the same processors with different clock speeds and higher prices over and over again, plus that many people buy Ryzen simply to not support Intel.
But anyway, whatever happens to Vega, Navi HAS TO be better than Nvidia, it's gonna be a 7nm architecture vs Volta's 10nm. They can't fuck up that bad.

Here is my Thing with Vega:
Back in 2016 i decided it is time to throw my GTX670 out of the System!
I am pushing 1440p and...yeah 2GB VRAM aren't doing it and you also need some power to push the resolution itself, so a new card was needed.
I decided pretty early on: "I want power!"
I never really went and grabbed "The best thing you can get for money!", i am more of the "Fast, but reasonable price!",
which is usually the card below the flaggship!
    Not this time.
I really wanted the best there is and at the time, we KNEW, that nVidia and AMD both had something prepared.
That was BEFORE AMD said, that Polaris is not going to be high end.
    So i waited.
Pascall came and delivered quite the performance and then AMD came and said, that Polaris isn't going to be the GPU, i was hoping for.
In the end, it was a smart move from AMD to tackle the mid- and low-range, because that is what people buy, but not me.
I played with the thought of waiting until Vega, but i wanted something NOW and without a clear launch date for Vega, i went for the 1080!
Now..OVER A YEAR LATER...Vega arrives and besides the price...
I am not really sold on Vega!
    Actually i am disappointed.
Took them one year to BARELY catch up, from what we know at the moment?
    Not really a great performance.
    MSRP of 499 is...okay!
    Just "okay"!
    Why?
Because you can get 1080's for a similar price here (in germany!), if you search for it.
So in the end, AMD is delivering a product, that doesn't tackle the absolute High-End and instead competes with a card that is over 1 year old already (which is a lot of time in terms of GPU development!).
It will probably get hotter and will drain more power (Seriously AiO AND 2x8-Pin?), despite a new architecture and the better memory?
That is my overall problem with Vega!
For all the time they had...this is a pretty weak performance, especially when you compare it to their Ryzen Launch, which kicked Intel so hard in the nuts, they had to actually DO SOMETHING!
I mean the Core i9 don't happen, because Intel feels like it!
    And nVidia?
Seriously, they had 1 year to bring their NEXT generation to the front line.
It isn't there yet, but do you think, they're sleeping?
While AMD was busy "just" catching up, they're preparing the next thiung, that will overthrow everything, AMD has to use for the next year, probably two!
For me, Vega is too little too late!
I am not an nVidia fanboy. I'd GLADLY buy AMD, heck i did, when Ryzen came out, because Ryzen really did it for me, but Vega just looks like something nVidia already did 1 year ago.
All they have to do, is to lower the price of the 1080 by maybe 20 bucks and THADDAAA, they have a product competing with Vega, without having to actually do something!

I'm just going to say again that I personally don't think pixel resolution is massively important, especially with the awesomeness that is TSAA (Temporal Supersample Anti Aliasing). What I want is more resolution in time, that is: framerate. So if amd wants to really impress me, show a modern game running at 400, 500, 1000 fps. I want framerate removed from the latency equation, but a simple constant of 1ms would be alright too.

Does the higher wattage requirement make sense because they push the cards harder in the future? EDIT: Does the software update push the hardware harder? I have no experience with AMD graphics cards.
To make it wine software it has to have the right hardware to expand into, right? It is a smart move for people who often play the long con.

  • @TheSerbianEmperor

Blah blah blah blah, Nvidia fanboy, blah blah.
I don't think AMD's going to be able to compete with Nvidia's high, high end GPU's, but same performance as 1080 for a lower price can be an amazing deal. Especially considering Vega uses HBM2 memory and has full and proper DX12 support, as well as better maturing drivers, which in the long run could possibly make a significant difference between the two.
Top end enthusiasts will still most probably be buying 1080ti, but High end budget gamers will have a fine selection with 1070, 1080's and Vega GPU's.
AMD's been absolutely demolishing Intel as of late, but I don't think they will be able to compare to Nvidia, at least not this generation.
Let's hope Ryzen's massive success brings AMD enough money so they can widen their R&D department and bring give us a proper competition on both fronts.
And for the record, I own both, I like both. I don't hate either side, just buying what the best I can for the money I have.

Amd just wants to target a very specific demographic. They never meant to compete with 1080ti. They were focusing on providing a more stable gaming experience. If people have loads of money, they'll obviously throw them at companies whenever new stuff comes out. Just like some iphone users buy a new iphone every year. But people who think long term and don't want to spend too much for just gaming, will prefer hardware that will last them a while. Not necessarily with top performance. But stable and reasonable performance at a mid-range price. Because 240 fps doesn't mean shit when you have a monitor that can only go upto 140 or something. If amd can utilise vulkan and dx12, the future looks bright; Not for companies, but for us consumers.

    • @xIcarus227

"They never meant to compete with 1080ti"
That's the stupidest thing I've heard all day.
AMD's end goal is to compete with Nvidia and Intel in every price segment, such that they can maximize their profit - any company that sells something and has competitors is striving to do this.
AMD simply failed to meet expectations with Vega, I don't get why you're covering up for them.

The lowest end VEGA card seems to be where it is at, with barely better mining abilities than an RX580 and a higher TDP it's unlikely miners will want them, and with Freesync it should bring some competition to the GTX1070-1080 area.
Let's just hope VEGA can do something!

375w running 24/7 is actually closer to $60 per MONTH with the rates i have here. maybe high 40's in the US.
i'm reluctant to buy vega cards... i want a more powerful freesync-enabled card so i don't have much choice, but damn... maybe i should just get another rx480 (if i can ever buy one again) and wait for navi

A quick math lesson on how to calculate electricity costs so that people don't argue over how much it costs :)
      1) Find how much power is being used (375 W is the best estimate for now)
      2) Find how much you pay for electricity per kW/h (average is around $0.10 per kW/h in the US)
Take that electricity cost per kW/h, divide by 1000, multiply by the amount of power being used, and multiply by the number of hours that much power is being used.
      0.1 /1000, * 375 * 12 * 365
running a graphics card consuming 375 W for 12 hours each day for a year, for example, will cost you $164.25 if you pay $0.1 for kW/h
For most people the figure will be less because 12 hours of full utilization each day is higher than normal.

    • @GraveUypo
      @GraveUypo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

i know no one uses a card at full load 24/7 all month. a more realistic regular scenario if you're not mining it's safe to assume 1/8 of that cost per month at most.
but i do mine with my pc whenever i'm not actively using the processing power (no reason not to), so i care :P

Until you own a 280x you don't know what novideo input really means. If you've never owned one, after 2 years all 3 of the 280x's in my friend group stopped working within months of eachother. Mine went first, starting with some light artifacting, purple trees in farcry 4, GTA V crashes, and not a month later it refused to boot. Ofcourse this was like 2 months after the 2 year warranty stopped. AMD is just as bad as Nvidia, planned obsolescence much.

It's like a war for people, in between which company they pick to provide them their hardware. It's as if people believe there is something noble to sticking with a company despite ups and downs. The companies don't give a shit if you decide to stay "loyal" because there will always be someone out there that will take your spot. We're in a capitalistic society, you fuck up-you fall; and rightfully so. You shouldn't grow an attachment to a company because that causes problems and disputes. Just use whatever is working better for a better price, leave the friendship shit behind. This isn't fucking teletubbies.

I can't speak for others but I don't have any love for AMD.... But, I HATE Nvidia with a firey passion! Nvidia are almost as anti consumer as intel, they outright lie about their products and use their money through GameWorks to stifel competition by having developers code in a way that makes their cards look better than they are by gimping AMD (and their own older cards).
Many Nvidia fanboys like to cry that DOOM is an "AMD" optimised game it is NOT; it's just not coded like garbage and taking Nvidia money to put pointless amounts of tessallation in the code.
When you get games like DOOM that are coded efficiently AMD cards take Nvidia cards to the cleaners!

    • @sookmahroot
      @sookmahroot 7 ปีที่แล้ว

P.S. Nvidia also LIE about their cards power usage! They take the usage from the base clock of the card which you CANNOT run the card at without flashing the BIOS and voiding your warrenty!
Yet all their performance charts are taken from the BOOST clock!

Liquid Cooled Vega@1677Mhz will give me roughly 35% to 45% improvement in 1440p Ultra compared to my R9 Fury@1000mhz in games, this is not bad at all and this is based on current performance figures. When DSBR is enabled and an overclock on the HBM2 to over 1000Mhz from 945Mhz i'll see even more gains. Factor in Vega's Super FineWine Tech underneath the hood which includes massive FP16 performance numbers in games like Wolfeinstein 2 and Farcry 5 its looking really good, honestly the 1080 (performance already maxed)doesn't stand a chance against Vega (Tons of optimisation potential) in the future. Just buy a nice 750watt PSU + cause you would just be asking for trouble if its less than that.
