Cult of Personality refers to political and cultural leaders who's charisma generates wild, blind devotion from the masses. Those who follow them (the cultists) do so without any regard to the truth behind the public face. These types of leaders are incredibly dangerous because they wield a staggering amount of power through easily manipulated minions. The Cult of Personality has never been as strong and as pervasive as it is today in western society.
A "cult of personality" is when a person is promoted as great and/or becomes even bigger than a movement they're in or behind. Sometimes this happens deliberately, as with Stalin. Sometimes it's the result of the power of their personality. This song is so well-written. I thought the most striking moment in the video is when it showed MLK and the lyric said "When a leader speaks, that leader dies."
Living Colour, to this day, is still one of my favorite rock bands of all time. This came out in 1988-89, when most of rock was still dominated by hair metal bands. They had a couple other minor hits, but this was definitely the biggest. HOWEVER, their first two albums especially, are INCREDIBLE! The first album you can listen all the way through-their are no filler songs. I strongly recommend Desperate People, Which Way to America?, and Funny Vibe. You really can't miss on any song on the first two albums!
Beyond an overall incredible song musically and lyrically, that guitar solo is seriously underrated. It is both shredding and melodically fits within the rhythm section behind it. Plus, that shift into a riff near the end of the solo is, as one of the ICP guys once said, "pure mothaf&$#in MAGIC!"
The song is about how a dynamic personality can persuade people into actions either good or bad. Charisma is hypnotizing. Kennedy is juxtaposed to Mussolini to illustrate how a dynamic leader can inspire despite the message. Kennedy was the young leader that inspired hope in the US, and Mussolini was the Fascist leader of Italy who stood with Hitler in WWII. Both inspired because of their personalities. Cult like, if you will.
Glamor boys was also big on this release. Living Color was probably the first rock group I liked as a kid. My parents were into reggae and I was into stuff like prince and public enemy. I wrote this group fan mail when I was 7 I think.
Great album by Living Colour. I played this front to back and again and I still have the CD. Every song is good. And all four of these guys are very skilled musicians. Another great review guys. Thanks
I first heard this song on a floppy plastic record that accompanied an article in Guitar Player magazine. I dubbed it on cassettes and gave it to all of my friends (Yeah, I'm that old!) I just recently discovered you guys and I dig what you are doing! Keep rockin', brothers! Pastor Jim from Cali.
I remember when this song blasted onto the radio. Cory Glover was Judas in one cast for "Jesus Christ, Superstar." One of the most under appreciated bands in my opinion. The lyrics were so prescient, and even more appropriate today.
So glad I found this past reaction! Living Colour is one of my all-time faves! Incredibly talented individuals and an amazing band, stage performance. You guys are doing such a great job. Thank you!
Hi from Argentina Thanks for reacting to what is my favorite band since 1990 !! But above all, congratulations for the "preview" with the information about the band and the subject. You are the first that I see that you have investigated to better understand what you are going to see and share.
The TV show was "In Living Color" featuring comedy skits. Actually, it's not "Political", the gist is a Cult Of Personality can develop on the right and the left.
the band impressed Mick Jagger enough so that Jagger contributed to their debut album. They're also the first band I ever heard do a song about being "bi".
Living colour has six studio albums out they are still rocking till this day aslander is A great song open letter to A land lord new jack theme I could go on but see for yourself
they were on the lineup of the 1st LOLLAPOLOOZA tour in 91- as well as FISHBONE (who deserves a whole reaction channel) and opened for ANTHRAX as well as THE ROLLING STONES but just didn t break through as headliners unfortunately
@@ViewsFromThe502 I;ve argued with a few youngsters who thot this was from the late 90s or early 2000s because it's on guitar hero. Pisses me off. Sorry. My youngest daughter thot "Little Red Corvette" was new in 2006. Stupid kids.
When we have videos that initially get blocked we file a dispute. They have 30 days to respond. If they don't respond then the dispute and the video gets released.
Released in 1988*. That was a simple misread. Carry on 👍

Campaign to put them into the ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME! The most underrated band!
"Only you can set you free." 📢
Drums are good, too :)
This song is unbelievably good, deep, and still relevant. Living Colour was/is a fantastic band.
So glad you're reacting to this great classic.
Vernon is such an underrated player.
That's BURNIN' Vernon Reid!
Vernon made his Guitar Cry.

Yeah that was perfect timing. It gave me chills hearing that .
Technically a cult of personality requires use of propaganda and media.
Or Trump and Putin
Have you been reading the dictionary again, David ?
@@ReneChewbaka It's more entertaining to read weird comments regarding something I posted a year ago.

As Caucasian headbangers...we were blown away and so proud hear them tell their story and as muscians.. fire!!
"In living color" was a TV show. Nice catch ryan
Open letter to a Landlord is another good one by them

Agree, absolutely. Vernon Reid's guitar work here is off the charts awesome. It's like Free-Jazz meets Heavy Metal.
Vernon Reid played guitar on Public Enemy's first 2 albums.
The current bassist, Doug Wimbish played bass on the early rap albums like the one from the Sugar Hill Gang.
7:35 god that solo left me with chills when i first heard it
Excellent!
OPEN LETTER TO A LANDLORD is another of theirs-very different from this but shows how versatile they are

You can listen to that riff all day long?
I've been listening to it for over 30 years.
It never gets old.
Living Colour got noticed by some small band "Rolling Stones" :P .. Mick heard them and loved their sound, and made sure they got some promotion
Glamor boys was also big on this release. Living Color was probably the first rock group I liked as a kid. My parents were into reggae and I was into stuff like prince and public enemy. I wrote this group fan mail when I was 7 I think.
Cory was in the movie platoon I believe and I've heard he is the nephew of Danny Glover the actor🤔🤔
Such a message
The message is that we hand over our inner wisdom to big famous personalities. Not a good idea.
Saw them in Stockholm right before they broke big. Fab show. Corey was also in Platoon : )
Great album by Living Colour. I played this front to back and again and I still have the CD. Every song is good. And all four of these guys are very skilled musicians. Another great review guys. Thanks

I bought this when it came out on CD in 1986...good times!

The lead singer was really good in the movie Platoon as well.
Corey...singer is Danny Glover's(actor) nephew
I saw this band live up at Amherst ma. college AMAZING ❤❤❤❤❤
William Calhoun is an amazing Drummer 🥁

@@thlarose3070 I had forgotten that - thank you!
Saw this band in a bar in Lawrence, KS then open for the rolling stones.

Vernon Reid does bad things to guitars.. and it sounds beautiful.

Check out Bad Brains. Another all black band who played hardcore punk in DC in the late 70s and 80s. They broke barriers and made some killer music.
Such a good song. Can't wait to see your reactions!
Open Letter To A Landlord is the best Living Colour song.
"Now that's what you call a happy accident" - Bob Ross
They're still touring in 2023!
Vernon Reid is an insane guitarist!

If not the best guitar solo from the 80s, it's damn near the top. However, Living Colour's best is Love Rears It's Ugly Head.
There are LIVE VIDEOS OFVTHEM!!!!

Vernon Reid is one of the great guitarists ever.
Only black heavy rock group!!! TV SHOW WAS "IN LIVING COLOR" BAND "LIVING COLOR"
Suggest WAR'S "OUTLAW" AND "LOWRIDER"
He was not Vernon's first choice for the lead singer. Unreal.
their second album times up is even better than vivid
