I met Jay twice at a couple of different restaurants a year apart. He is the nicest guy ever. We talked for a while, he treated me like an old friend both times. I hope he lives to be 120 years old. Awesome car too!
BTW, why Jay wastes his time on the road when he is rich enough to have a great French cooking chef working for him in his palace? Jay has more than enough money to have servants, including highly paid ones.

I had one of these as my everyday car for four years - loved it! Jay describes it perfectly. The silence and comfort of the ride has to be experienced and he is right about the power - it is always there. The Turbo R is a beast of a car.
Where I used to live in north Bedfordshire in the 80s and 90s a bunch of the local wealthy old men had pre-war Bentleys tucked away in their garages. At the weekend they'd blast around the back roads where I used to cycle and ride horses. They weren't going terribly fast, but it was a marvelous sight to see one being actually driven. At least one was a blower Bentley.
A man I admired once advised me to buy a pair of 600 dollar shoes just like his because they would last a lifetime. I hate buying shoes so I went out and got what I thought would be the last pair I would ever have to buy. Turns out the guy had a whole closet full of 600 dollar shoes and each pair only got worn occasionally. He was not lying or being malicious but his advice to young man just getting started in life was terrible. Kids , dont trade your Civic for a Bentley.
+Tobias Duncan A somewhat nutty and eventually bankrupt uncle gave me similar advice when I was a lad. It is, as you say, terrible advice that fails to consider the time-value of money. Thank the gods I didn't take it.
As usual, reading comments on anything on the internet can make you crazy. I was really surprised that Jay had one of these, but shouldn't have been. I've always loved this era Bentley for all the reasons Jay gives. If you have never spent time in one of these, you really don't know what build quality is. Nothing made today really is like these older Rolls/Bentleys. Everything you touch is made of heavy-something. Metal. Leather. Wool. Whatever is in there is not only real, but its a lot of it and beautifully crafted down to the smallest pieces. ZThe use of heavy real materials provides a certain quiet inside that cannot be achieved otherwise. Its very different.
I've driven a 2004 Arnage for a client for years, racking up huge miles around SoCal. Over time you grow to really appreciate the charm and unique over the road dynamics of the thing. It's like nothing else, the top models from mercedes, bmw, jaguar, lexus etc are hard to tell apart. Bentleys are like nothing else you've ever experienced. Thanx for this video.
awesome! I remember working at a car parts store and a guy came in with one of these. when the garage came to book him in they asked the engine size "six thousand, seven hundred and fifty cubic centimetres, dear boy" came the reply. the desk chap nearly choked on his tea..
I have to admit on some days when I am driving in my beat up 19 year old Accord I do feel a twinge of envy when I see a really nice car that I like. I do have a nice feeling when you share stories about your cars. Thanks Jay. This is a car I'll never own, nice ride & good story.
Regardless of what one thinks of Jay's Tonight Show, he is probably the most prolific, enthusiastic and intelligent car collector IN THE WORLD. You can tell that it's not just about money or bragging rights or having the biggest collection (like many rich Arabs); instead, it's all about the history of the car and what the car meant to the history of automobiles. I give Jay incredible respect!
It's always good to see that me and Jay still have a "Bentley Section" in our garages - his is still full, and mine is still empty - but its still set up ready, just in case..
As Jay said, Rolls never did list the horsepower of their cars. If you went to their stats, horsepower would be listed as "Adequate" When the Turbo Bentley came out, power was listed as "More than adequate". You just gotta love it! Thank you, Jay! I love and appreciate what you do. Thank you so much for sharing! I am also another Foreign Motors alumni.:-)
I saw a documentary on the new Bentaga and the leather is still hand sewn by seamstresses probably with one eye but they are real local folk, putting their love into the car. None of this mechanised rubbish.
Chances are, the three who commented before me are all now bankrupt. Bentleys are for wealthy people. New ones cost a fortune to buy and old ones cost a fortune to maintain.
Man i love how Leno can keep a car showroom clean, and he's been driving it for 25 years! Now thats a man who appreciates his automobiles. A little turtle wax on them tires, and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference!
Coming from England, your last statement of "There'll always be an England, there'll always be a Bentley" I entirely concur with. Over the years, we have sold off many of our great British Car Manufacturers, and the few we have left (i.e. Land Rover, Aston Martin etc) we need to preserve and cherish. I'm very glad to see you have a true appreciation of great British Craftsmanship. All the best from Cambridge UK!
Hi Jay! Even though they stiffened the roll bars and upgraded the suspension, that old steel frame is what gets me. Over engineering from the start to create a product that just lasts. They charge you for it, but the overheads for quality car makers wasn't spending millions to retro grade parts, so they are in the garage more often, right? My dream car back in high school. None of my schoolmates even knew what a Bentley was.The company even sent me a copy of their magazine Queste along with brochures.
I toured the Rolls-Royce / Bentley factory in 1988. I remember seeing a Bentley Turbo coming back to the garage after a test drive. It was British racing Green. As Jay said it was a quaint place, but it was possible to get close to the works. I watched the grill of a Rolls being made by hand.
There are still people, like me, who love that floaty-boaty feeling. ha ha Jay, thanks for all the information you offer on all the great vehicles you own. Its a blast just to see and hear you speak about each vehicle.
Another great review, Jay. I have so much respect for your passion and enthusiasm for all of these cars, without any attitude about it. Thanks. So cool that you've owned this one since new. I used to love to visit FMW in Natick back in the day.
Jay Leno, I enjoy your car videos. You're well versed in the history of each of your cars, its a total joy to hear the story of each vehicle and see your excitement while telling them. Your show is unlike other car shows that run down the spec sheet and basically give a letter grade. Thanks. 1989 Bentley with no check engine light, yet I cant repair the dreary cause of the check engine light on my 2000 audi a4 :\
I grew up knowing a few Commonwealth chauffers and they all said the same thing "the Rolls is a car to be driven in but the Bentley in the drivers car".
I couldn't agree with you more. I love all of his videos, so interesting. He is so much more likable as a car enthusiast than as a comedian, to me anyway. This is where he really shines. Go Jay.
When I was a kid, I had this alphabet book that features memorable cars for each letter of the alphabet. One of the cars I remember from this book was the Bentley Turbo R.
Really impressed by Jay's encyclopedic knowledge of practically every make and model of car, and every aspect of their production and history. Actually knows his stuff. Impressive, and entertaining. How many cars, btw, does Jay have in that garage? Looks like a pretty sizable fleet. Must have a fortune invested in them. But, as a car guy, if I had the dough, that's what I would do.
I worked at Rolls-Royce Aero Engines in Derby back in the late '90s. There was an old tea lady who would trundle round all of the offices selling tea, coff, sandwiches and bacon rolls.
man.. when i subbed to jay a few months back.. i thought i guy like him would upload once a week... but no! thanks Jay.. you're a real idol and keep pumping out these vids! :)
That seatbelt must be something special for the US market; my mechanic has one of these (his treat to himself) and it's got the more conventional 3-point belt with adjustable upper mount for comfort, so you don't end up with it under your ears like Jay seems to!
This style of Bentley reminds me of the older Volvos. Appearing to be hewn from a single block of granite, over-engineered but with surprising performance. 275/55/15 is still a super massive tyre!
7:15 excellent! I've been trying to explain the strangling seatbelt phenomena where you forget to unhook the belt when you got out, then next time you get into and then quickly back out of the car because you forgot something - you'll end up with backwards trying to climb away from the car while the belt is tight around your neck and slowly, almost politely dragging you into the driver footwell by the head try it, I bet that Bentley will try to calmly choke you into the floor just like an old Civic
The seat belt is supposed to be hooked to it. It moves the belt out of the way when you leave the car and pulls it around you when you get in. Sorry officer, I forgot my seatbelt is no longer an excuse with this.
sweet ride. new mulsanne s and continental r are wonderful, but turbo r announced that Bentley was back in it. no longer the grandfather's Bentley, this one had "all that" and scoot to boot. woof
I walked into my customers garage and there sat a gleeming dark green Bentley R Turbo. I stopped in my tracks and just drooled over it. He uses it ONCE a year to go to Royal Ascot, using a chauffeur to take him and his wife. This year they didn’t go, so it hasn’t even left the garage. I see it pretty much every time I go there, just checking up on the ‘ole girl! Beautiful!
I agree, Bentley's haven't really all been what they were in the W.O. days. A Bentley is not the perfect gentleman the Rolls Royce is, he's more the gentleman Rugby player. Warm hearted, gentle, but still big and imposing, even wearing a quality tailored suit and more than able to pack a hefty punch. I think the W12 Continentals follow this trend well. Big, comfy bruisers of cars. Rest well Mr Leno, there will always be a Bentley, for there shall always be England.
Jay, we've met many times and you always liked my Rollses and Bentleys because they were absolutely original. My dear chap: 1. The 1952 car was not the Continental R. That appeared in 1991. You are referring to the R Type Continental. 2. The Turbo R is not a "classic example of Body on chassis design". It is a monocoque design, therefore chassisless. Cheers John
English cars were doomed by unions and demotivated management. That's why there is no British car industry today. But there were some good ones. I wish Jay would review a Triumph. I had a TR5PI and it was faultless (yes even the Lucas electrics). I photographed the odometer going from 99999 to 00000. The fuel injection did wear over time but it was mechanical - no electronics and dead easy to adjust. I could get 40mpg from it - not bad for a 2.5 liter 6. Oh and could do 140mph - before the day when they would lock you up and throw away the key!
Yeah great cars. I've a 1994 Brooklands Turbo R. It has airbags not that weird seatbelt arrangement. Kind of expensive to keep going. Parts are very expensive. They rust in the UK too. But tremendously engaging to drive. Jay should be in charge of Top Gear UK never mind America. His knowledge of cars is impressive.
Fair enough and 18 isn’t bad for a motor that big and a car that heavy,I’ve always wanted to drive one,I chauffeur in a new e class and it sucks, love a day driving that then getting into my old e34
Fair point. I think when most laymen (certainly me anyway) criticize a company's quality control, we aren't really thinking of it as only the people who hold that literal job title. We're just critiquing the overall end result that their procedures produce. I've had repeated issues with a particular major Chinese electronics manufacturer, who I've criticized in online reviews. It's very likely someone saw the problems but their superiors let it through, those details aren't for me to know.
Me, too. What was that all about? I was 15 years old. I was obsessed. I had Bentley symbols drawn all over the place, before anyone in the US knew what a Bentley was.
I love this car. My favorite car to date is still the last original continental R/T -this car could easily go sideways, Jays just too much of a gentleman to do it.. on camera !
I live in Middlewich (Cheshire, UK) which is only about eight miles from the Bentley factory in Crewe. We see the 'test cars' on our local roads all the time.
I do agree with Mr leno on the car rotting away being caused by getting wet but I don't have the option of keeping my daily driver dry up here in the rust belt because of rock salt and liquid calcium ( or liquid body rot to car people) our cars have an avg life span of 10 to 13 years. He has the luxury of living in California with no serious weather that makes all the difference in the lifespan of car metal
wish I had so much money that my garage had 'sections' You know Jay is the only celeb ppl could see in a 20 yr old car and no one would think 'wow, when did he fall on hard times?"
This episode has more jokes than one of the Tonight Show's monologue. Nice car ! This thing is a tank. I have never driven one, but after watching this video I would really like to ride in one. I like the variety Jay shows us on these You Tube episodes. Everything from electric buses , motorcycles and gasoline race cars. Jay is really a curious car person. I love all the jokes and imitations he makes of the English and German accents. I am half english by the way.
The seats in these are so comfortable - like a leather recliner - you can drive 600 miles and your bum cheeks still feel as pristine as taking a trip to the corner store.
8:50. That is amazing. More rolls Royce and Bentley reviewers need to speak on this. U can have a temperature setting on the top air vents that is different from the footwell. AMAZING!!!!!
The whole point to those belts was that you'd keep them latched in. The idea was that it would let you out when you opened the door and strap you in when you closed it. The latch was only there in case the mechanism failed, so you could release it manually. Of course, all of that is a moot point when you still needed to fasten the lap belt manually! Never mind the fact that they could chafe your neck when used in such a manner; or that they'd take your head clean off if you actually were involved in an accident 'cause of how they ran across your neck... I have a strong distaste for this seat belt design. I'll never own a car with one of these.
Those seat belts were never meant to be unbuckled at the top. GM had a similar system. It was designed so people who were disinclined to buckle up were forced to.
My dad had a 90 accord with those belts and one time he was eating an ice cream cone and made the mistake of opening the door. Knocked it right out of his hand.
I just rebuilt a Rolls Royce Silver Spur(Same line as this car)from the ground up. Now working on a 1932 Rolls Royce Straight Six. Full rebuild all original. We just sent the Silver Spur to the paint Shop. Nice car.
Love this car and always wanted to get one , just like this . But it scares me , if something goes wrong , that it would cost a fortune . Some say they really don´t break down , others say , they have constant problems . Which is it . I´m even looking at one right now. Thank you
I work on Porsches so I can't answer your question. But I have also lusted after a Turbo R for quite some time. I also see vastly conflicting information on how reliable the cars are. I think if you are expecting Japanese reliability you will very sorely disappointed. I'm thinking German luxury car maintenance with slightly higher prices.
I love this car. Classic old school luxury. Nobody does leather and wood interiors like the British. I'm sure a lot of young people would laugh at it and consider it an old boat, but I do not care. I wish it was mine.

That's exactly why Jay is the best.
Jay wasn't lying you can get them for a good price
Hopefully that will help you pay for the gas! Lol
except the maintenance, repairs and parts will bankrupt you.
chieftp I'll only use it to pick up chicks from their moms like Jay said
If that is so aBentley is not the car for you
yes unfortunately
I walked into my customers garage and there sat a gleeming dark green Bentley R Turbo. I stopped in my tracks and just drooled over it.
He uses it ONCE a year to go to Royal Ascot, using a chauffeur to take him and his wife. This year they didn’t go, so it hasn’t even left the garage.
I see it pretty much every time I go there, just checking up on the ‘ole girl! Beautiful!
Under those conditions, I'm surprised that it even runs. The engine wear on start-up must be horrendous.
"more steam!!! more power to the engine room!!!"
My dear chap:
1. The 1952 car was not the Continental R. That appeared in 1991. You are referring to the R Type Continental.
2. The Turbo R is not a "classic example of Body on chassis design". It is a monocoque design, therefore chassisless.
Cheers
John
I work for a Rolls n and Bentley dismantlers and JSD HK and you are correct
English cars were doomed by unions and demotivated management. That's why there is no British car industry today. But there were some good ones. I wish Jay would review a Triumph. I had a TR5PI and it was faultless (yes even the Lucas electrics). I photographed the odometer going from 99999 to 00000. The fuel injection did wear over time but it was mechanical - no electronics and dead easy to adjust. I could get 40mpg from it - not bad for a 2.5 liter 6. Oh and could do 140mph - before the day when they would lock you up and throw away the key!
@Steve Prince He doesn't lie about his jobs.
@Steve Prince You make it like he's had every job for 10-20 years....
@Steve Prince You just made him a liar....
This car is elegant Jay, near flawless, and I am sure it's a delight to ride in or drive in. TY so much for sharing!
Nice I bet it’s a thirsty car especially these days
Steve they do but are rare, not sure what it’s got in comparison to the normal one but they’re very real
My dream car when I was in prep school.
Same here !
Me, too. What was that all about? I was 15 years old. I was obsessed. I had Bentley symbols drawn all over the place, before anyone in the US knew what a Bentley was.
Just bought a 1991 Turbo R. 50K miles. Look forward to owning and driving. Keep up the great work Mr. Leno. :-)
Beautiful car Jay but that shoulder belt is brutal.
it is for the US market
I love this car. My favorite car to date is still the last original continental R/T -this car could easily go sideways, Jays just too much of a gentleman to do it.. on camera !
They are cheap to buy in UK, but very expansive to keep, drive, insure, and service.
12:59 not a V12 but a W12, mister Jay!
This is why airbags+seatbelts equals safer vehicles.
Seems ridiculous, considering how well normal selt belts work. Australian cars had standard seat belts
GREAT CARS , SOLID AND DECENT. AND PAINTINGS!
That seat belt looks too high. That would annoy the crap out of me.
+Mr. White you and me both.. the first thing i noticed when he was buckled up
Yeah, that'll probably keep you out of your Bentley. No doubt.
Those seat belts were never meant to be unbuckled at the top. GM had a similar system. It was designed so people who were disinclined to buckle up were forced to.
No euro-spec car had these!
My dad had a 90 accord with those belts and one time he was eating an ice cream cone and made the mistake of opening the door. Knocked it right out of his hand.
The two kinds of horns are great!
I think those seatbelts are US spec, you don't get those on UK Bentleys, you get the normal version.
Atleast it has a general motors transmission. ...
Cheapest part on this to fix.
If you are middle class, but want a rich car, learn how to do all the repairs yourself. Then you can afford to take care of most luxury cars.
If you spin your own wrenches...no vehicle is out of reach.
I don't know what you mean ? Language thing.
I want your opinion , thanks.
I like cars. Period. The wooley car mats puts this one over the top. Imagine Honda having that as an option. I'd buy one for that alone.
I like the Turdo R and the New Silver spur and the mulsanne
I love this car. Classic old school luxury. Nobody does leather and wood interiors like the British. I'm sure a lot of young people would laugh at it and consider it an old boat, but I do not care. I wish it was mine.
