This has to be one of the best ever Jools Holland performances. Not only does Weller absolutely smash it himself, but drums and bass are on point as well. Brilliant performance!
Seems like every Jools Holland performance I've watched is always so unique and spot on:). This one is no exception:). I'm looking to learn the bassline. Going to slow it down and learn it.
And let's not forget the excellent Helen Turner on organ. Mighty band, but it got even better when Weller added Steve Cradock to the touring line-up. Having a second guitarist, especially of Cradock's calibre, gave them even greater depth of sound/firepower. Yolanda, Helen, Steve C, Steve W and Weller - mesmerising.
@@anttherubbishdrummer.8513 Indeed and myself too. I love the self deprecating account name. I'm sure your great at the tubs nd skins. Have a good life man ✌
@@anttherubbishdrummer.8513 Recently bought a high-hat tambourine (or whatever you call it) to try to copy the drumming. Getting close, I I don't think I'll ever be as clean and precise as this drummer. Sad!
ONE OF THE GREATEST MUSICIANS OF THE LAST 37 YRS...I HOPE PEOPLE IN THE FUTURE PEOPLE RECOGNIZE THIS GUYS SPECIAL ABILITIES...HE IS AN INDESPENSIBLE ARTIST IN MY LIFE...CHICAGO CHECKING IN..WELLER 4EVER...
I remember watching this live on tv back in 1993. At the time I thought it was a great performance. Looking back on it this was the high point in Weller's entire music career as it showcased his full range of talent. Also I didn't realize it at the time but he was a serious guitarist in the mould of Wilko Johnson and Mick Green. This is sometimes overlooked as he didn't play long solos or full on arpeggio style like Johnny Marr or Peter Buck. Paul Weller was unique and like Morrissey actually wrote lyrics that had meaning and not simply words which rhymed. Genius.
Yeah I think the reason that his guitar playing isn't recognized so much as he uses it in service of a higher good, if that makes any sense. Like, he's a great guitarist in order to express what he wants to express rather than a guitarist looking for something to show case his guitar talents.
For those who asked, the drummers name is Steven White. He's quality. He's played with some of the very best. His brother is "Alan White", the 2nd drummer for Oasis.
God lord, what a great man Paul Weller is. Constantly evolving over the years, producing some of the best work we have ever seen in the UK. What a performance this is,from Wellers powerful vocal and guitar,to the other high class musicians surrounding him. If you are even remotely a music fan,you should be able to see this mans genius.
This performance always stuck in my head as one of my favourites , fantastic energy and a masterclass in live music. When I think of jools Holland I think if this tune. And also supergrass ‘ moving ‘ in 99 on this show. Which I’ve never been a fan of but unbelievable vocals. Anyone who is a fan of this show should definitely check out this performance
I was watching The Art of Drumming last night and Steve White was on talking about this very track !! All of the band absolutely rocking it on this performance which I remember watching at the time !
@@TheDenzel2012 Apologies for not knowing the keyboard players name. But this stripped down version of PW's music was fantastic. Weller's guitar playing and vocals are superb. Haven't been to see him live for many years but in my opinion was/is one of the greatest live performers this country has ever produced. Saw him solo, with the Jam and the Style Council.
I remember hearing this on a Now that’s what I call music compilation album from 93. That was my stand out track on the album, rewinding my cassette to get to the drumming crescendo at the end. One of my favourite tracks from Paul Weller, this version is better than the original.
Top drawer quality with Hendrix in the background looking down on Weller as he performs another master track...(& this one has got it all)!!..Stay cool 😎 SX ❤💖👍👍👍
Weller with that drummer who ever he is...is the fuckn alpha/omega Nothing can handle that shit ...power matched with power ..Fuc mind blowing performance from the two of them
Weller has always been able to bring the live performance to the studio and vice versa. Damn, he sounds so good. Wild Wood is such a classic album. This performance demands I go and pop on the vinyl. Long live the Modfather.
Saw the jam 1976, Wellers voice, any greaat band needs great lead, stunning vocal.... Great lyrics. Juat a Shame he's now all acoustic, James blunt like.... Hey thats artists for you... He's a great rock n roll singer and could go down in UK history with lennon, jagger, bowie as this countries greatest ever vocalists...!
Awesome! I loved PW's first solo album but hadn't heard much of him since it was released. My brother told me (pre-text msg? can't remember!) that he was on Jool's for the first time that night. So flicked on BBC2, watched the dizzy start and then PW is clanging out the intro to Sunflower and I distinctly remember thinking 'Yes! He's back!' The haircut, the Casino, the immaculate desert boots. He had his best band with him in my opinion - Helen, Yolanda and Steve (although not 100% complete until Steve #2 arrived). Followed up with Has My Fire and What's Going On ( Lena Fiagbe in the coolest yellow coat!). An unforgettable return.
The drummer is the brilliant Steve White. Absolutely top drummer and all round good chap. I know - I've been lucky enough to chat to him a few times. Does a lot of drum clinics with Chad Smith...'nuff said :)
Not a Steve Craddock in sight. Amazing guitar performance by Weller. Id like him to thin his touring band down and get back to this sound. Was a great period considering the music press were trying to lock him in a 1980s do not open box after the demise of the StyleCouncil.
@LeGrandeOrange So glad his talents dont go missed in US, when ever I have mentioned him to US business contacts of mine I get a vacant stare. I attended a recent Weller Concert in Brighton and as usual, 1st class performance, but slightly annoying crowd disturbance, there is a body of fans who are mistaken with the view that Wellers music requires fighting to be enjoyed !!!

Steve White on drums owns it!!!
Traditional grip as well. Look at the height he slams the snare on the intro with his left hand. What a groove and sound.
Best drummer ever.
So underrated
Weller has never been the same without Whitey.
Legend
Weller on form. Steve White being the bollocks. What's not to love
The Jam, The Style Council and then his own solo work. This guy is one the greats. So many great songs. What a talent!
Agree! And yet still so underrated
Such a gobsmackingly performance icredible. I would chew a leg off to see this, back in the day, live.
I love Yolanda Charles on bass.
I was wondering who that was.
She Is beautiful and very good bassist 👏
That there is a 4 minute drum, absolute masterclass 👏🏻👏🏻
Massive Paul Weller fan since I'm 16 ... I'm 58 .... a complete musical artist .. AWESOME !
Same
Awesome performance by PW and SW but big shout out to Yolanda Charles on the bass
Exactly all the planets alighned that night
3:13 Mind-blowing drum fill by Steve. The full band were really on fire during this period
As a drummer myself, its the precision of it and how clean all his fills cut through the mix which astonishes me.
