Interesting bit of trivia. The original choice for Dr. Reinhardt was not Maximilian Schell, but Christopher Lee. I can just imagine Chris Lee's accent of Dr. Reinhardt in the movie!
Can you appreciate true creative imagination like in the 50s 60s and 70s short episodes ,like the untouchables ,the outer limits , the night gallery , the twilight zone , combat ....The Black Hole is the result of true creative imagination and I appreciate it for what it is BRILLIANT....
The Cygnus was a beautiful ship and the robots were fun. I also enjoyed space being blueish with millions of stars. Unfortunately the writing was terrible.
Seriously, I truly think that Disneys "The Black Hole" is without a doubt in my opinion the best single science fiction adventure film ever made. Just let it happen to you without preconceived ideas, it is brilliant and the opening score is stunning ....I am so glad they didn't make it into a continuing boring saga...
Toby ,There is a lot of love for the movie itself too ,and for good reason. As I said before I think this is the "BEST" single science fiction adventure film "EVER"....Thank you Regards Peter.
The ending is meant to look like heaven and hell but, is more like just the Cygnus has crashed on another planet on the other side the heaven part is prob just the palominio crew passing out and just having that dream. Why couldn't it be hell..because the Cygnus crew are there also and I doubt everyone was evil and went to he'll with Reinhardt.
In his book Fantastic Cinema (highly recommended BTW) Peter Nicholls remarks that the black hole is red, presumably so that we can see it better. I thought that was a good observation about the deficient science in this movie. BTW: have you ever seen the British sci fi series Blake's Seven? It could more or less be described as a dyspotian, cynical anti Star Trek.
I took it to be because the light was getting red-shifted due to the event horizon, because the view from outside was blue-shifted. Or I could just be giving far to much credit to the effects people...
I just rewatched this movie, and I have a bit of different interpretation about the ending. Yes, it absolutely could be that Reinhardt is condemned to hell...but...also The Cygnus itself is a bit of a metaphor for Hell, too, and Reinhardt and Maximilian plays avatars of the devil/Satan. In the end, they become one being, and rather than just being a denizen of Hell, they are actually it's Ruler, standing above the other tormented souls, just as they did on the Cygnus. Yes, Reinhardt is being punished, but he also simultaneously gets exactly what he wants. As for the rest of the crew, from what I can tell, the novelization basically indicates that they become one with the Universe. In essence, they go to heaven, reach enlightenment, are reborn to a new life, become God....
I thought you were going to make the dirty robot joke keeping Maximillian I busy, but I appreciate the MST3K joke coming first. I wasn’t expecting that
I have watched most of the movie reviewed in this Chanel even though I can't stop watching your the review, you have such a good reputation on reviewing movies
In the Novel they give a more chilling details about the Zombified Crew. In the Novel Bob said if they try reverse the damage, the Crew would have mind of infants. Also Bob said that once a while a crew member would regain there consciousness for a short time, and they would commit suicide.
Sci-fi wasn’t meant for kids exclusively. LOL It was never considered kids stuff. It was cheesy due to the time period those types of films started in. 😂 Star Trek is sci-fi. Wasn’t targeted towards kids but was popular with them at the time. Sci-fi is for everyone depending on the tone of it.
This was a VHS rental classic and a great watch as an 80s teen. One thing to notice, has anyone not found similarities between Maximilian, the robot and recognizers, the large hovering vehicles in Tron?
The reason why I like the black hole newbee because of Vincent and bob. I never seen a robot with cartoon like eyes. Plus seeing a robot floating around in 1979 is a new thing I never seen.
The movie probably ranks at the front of the second tier of SF movies of that period. It's mood is unfocused, an experienced cast give lacklustre performances and the script needed a re-write.....but....For all that it has impressive production design, excellent visual effects and is entertaining, with a better judged running time than most SF films.
It's rarely shown any more, I watch whenever it comes on too (17:04), but only in bits and pieces, I repeatedly change the channel and come back to it😏
@maxwesty I shed a tear when old BOB dies. I remember every morning when I got ready for school and my mother drove my sister and I to school I would always repeat VINCent's first line in that scene "We have to go...." I loved VINCENT.
0:31 Since when is Star Wars sci-fi? Star Wars is high fantasy space opera, yo! 1:20 That's probably a realistic depiction of what it would be like. 1:54 Do you think Captain McCrea's name in 'WALL-E' is an homage to the name "McCrae?" 9:40 VINCENT does the same thing to Maximilian later on. 10:05 I've used that same joke before in reference to this movie. 12:29 That was perfect. XD
You have that backwards. Since when is Star Wars considered a Fantasy Space Opera? That’s the new classification that some people are using now. Before that it was Science Fantasy. Before that it was Science Fiction. It wasn’t a wave of fantasy being popularized in modern media, The Newbee is right that it’s what led to a wave of popularizing science fiction in modern media.
I've often wondered if Captain McCrea from 'WALL-E' might have been named after Kate McCrae. Different spelling, but just barely. 10:05 I made that joke 10 years ago when I made an AMV using scenes from this movie spliced together with music from the Half-Life games. 12:27 Notice how that parallels what Maximilian did to ("Not Robert G.") Durant. 13:09 If they're hearing their own thoughts, then why that specific line? None of them heard Reinhardt say that. 13:40 #dadjokes XD 16:00 Just like the Event Horizon.
This is a good 1979 movie that has held up very well, partly because it has a good story. Yvette Mimieux (b. 1942), covered neck-to-toe, was hotter than in any of her earlier movies, including The Time Machine (1960). Her ESP was a great addition but was insufficiently explored.
Excellent Sci-Fi Movie. Great special effects, Great cast, and Great ending! This movie was shown very often on HBO in the 1979 and 1980 period. I saw this in a theater in Tucson, AZ in 1979. I always had nightmares of the Black Hole and the mean and ominous robot "Maximilian."
At least they tried to show free fall no matter how silly the effects look nowadays. A modern film Space Sweepers didnt even try and I never felt I was watching something in space.
Yeah, seeing this as a kid, especially a sci-fi loving kid, is great. Re-watching it as an adult, not so much. A bit of nostalgia amid a host of murky and dated stuff.
That's where you're wrong, Disney didn't buy Star wars George Lucas sold Star wars to Disney. I know you may believe it's the same thing but it's not. Shane Disney bought Star wars make it sound like they didn't have to meet any stipulations, but they had to meet George Lucas's stipulations Amy Disney didn't meet those stipulations George Lucas would not have sold Star wars. George Lucas made a lot of money Disney lost a lot of money so then it just buy Star wars, George Lucas sold Star wars to Disney and now Disney is trying to cut George Lucas out of the deal. that's why Disney is trying to kill off the original Star wars characters & create a new Star wars.
A bit of constructive criticism: try to be less snarky and funny. It was okay the first couple of times in this video, but you just keep going and going with the pop culture quips and the sardonic mockery. I had to stop after five minutes. It was like watching some guy trying to do a solo version of MST3K, not like watching a movie review. I'm probably in the minority with this opinion, but I wanted to share it just the same.
Eduardo Corrochio I think it was great. Clunky? Maybe. Entertaining? Absolutely. I could never come up something half as good so I would say this video is perfect.
@@Hitch227 Perfect, wow, that's high praise. It's not my cup of tea but obviously a lot of people find it hilarious, based on the comments, so I missed the boat on this one.
This channel showed up in my recommended a few days ago and I have been bingeing ever since. Anybody else?
William Cornelius it is almost as addictive as graham norton
Me too! He’s frkkn awesome 🙌
That's how I got here
Same!! Best recommendation ever honestly
Yep found him a few months back. A real buried treasure on TH-cam.
Would love to see a prequels to this about the Cygnus being taken over by Rhinehart, with the crew staging a hopeless rebellion.
That would be gnarly. Give it a heavy atmosphere of doom.
Interesting bit of trivia. The original choice for Dr. Reinhardt was not Maximilian Schell, but Christopher Lee. I can just imagine Chris Lee's accent of Dr. Reinhardt in the movie!
12:07 OMG I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT THOUGHT THAT!!!!!!
I’ll never see that shot the same way.
Poor Disney, always trying to cash in like the money hungry vultures that they are
Yeah one problem with that black hole. Black hole was actually written and mostly filmed prior to Star Wars
@Joe M star wars came out in 77, this came out in 79, whatcha talkin' bout willis?
Yeah, the Ron Miller Disney years were rough. 🤣 🤦♀️
Can you appreciate true creative imagination like in the 50s 60s and 70s short episodes ,like the untouchables ,the outer limits , the night gallery , the twilight zone , combat ....The Black Hole is the result of true creative imagination and I appreciate it for what it is BRILLIANT....

Dude you're so funny. Never heard of this film but watched the review anyway.
I might be overtired but ‘I love you, baked potato’ made me cry laughing
The PG version of Event Horizon

PETER FAULDS I’m glad there is so much love for the soundtrack. John Barry is amazing.
Toby ,There is a lot of love for the movie itself too ,and for good reason. As I said before I think this is the "BEST" single science fiction adventure film "EVER"....Thank you Regards Peter.
Gosh
Your channel is very underrated
Dang this channel is consistently hilarious...glad I sub'd this is great content my dude!
This is the only video in TH-cam that doesn't have no thumbs down

dystopian
Loved Blake’s 7. Sadly the show’s extension after they thought it was being canceled is what set its downfall.
I took it to be because the light was getting red-shifted due to the event horizon, because the view from outside was blue-shifted. Or I could just be giving far to much credit to the effects people...
I'm betting Anthony Perkins an Roddy Mcdowall had fun after hours.
I never was a big fan of this movie but there's two things I liked about it. The musical score in the intro and the robot Vinson.
V.I.N.C.E.N.T -Vital Information Necessary CENTralized
The Uneventful Horizon? Cathedral ship shape proves it. Let's say 2.5 bees. That tickles me every time.

Yeah the book ending was just as confusing as the movie!
Just finished watching it and you are right about the ending not making sense. Definitely see where event horizon got its idea.
I watched this film a loooooooooong time ago, at age 8 or something. I don't remember if I liked it or not; probably not.
The black hole 2

I loved this movie back then, seen a few weeks ago and still, liked it.
The soundtrack reminds me of classic James Bond movies.
That's because it was composed by John Barry who actually did lots of Bond movies.
Just like real war / scientific ships the exterior is impressive however the interiors are dull. Great recap on this movie
In the Novel they give a more chilling details about the Zombified Crew. In the Novel Bob said if they try reverse the damage, the Crew would have mind of infants. Also Bob said that once a while a crew member would regain there consciousness for a short time, and they would commit suicide.
The effects hold up. The plot less so. The ship was huge because the crew was big. Now it's empty. That's the point.
I loved this movie as a 12 year old

May explain Max's divorce in 87

"Sucked down like an oyster on a Carnival cruise" is by far the most disgusting words ever uttered.
They are selling Black Hole figures at Walgreens in the US.

16:00 Just like the Event Horizon.
I Recommend this channel.
maximillian is awesome, he's kind of a drone just kinda floating around with food processors for hands
I saw the cat from outer space in the theater....lol
Ooooh yes please! Event Horizon if you haven't already! David Cronenbergs' Dead Ringers would be fun too...
Wait....... why this sound like Event Horizon?
This is a good 1979 movie that has held up very well, partly because it has a good story. Yvette Mimieux (b. 1942), covered neck-to-toe, was hotter than in any of her earlier movies, including The Time Machine (1960). Her ESP was a great addition but was insufficiently explored.
Just saw this film for the first and last time today. Enjoyed your video, it was pretty funny.
How can an unscheduled course correction be scheduled due?
Fun fact: The Cygnus crew member whose face plate Durant removes is the director...😁
11:35 "ironic that he's done in by gravity" . - brilliant
"Time to get down with the Cygnus" OK that got a sub.
Channels I discovered during Quarantine.
Reminded me of Event Horizon 1.0, the Cignas ship model n all are really spot on
The robot looks more like a Henry Hoover
At least they tried to show free fall no matter how silly the effects look nowadays. A modern film Space Sweepers didnt even try and I never felt I was watching something in space.
That young Frankenstein joke😂😂😂
Can’t believe I missed this.
What up Steph? Let's grow this channel
Saw this movie in theaters- your review was much better than the actual movie!
liked for the thumbnail
I saw this in early 1980 at the movies.I love this movie.Always have. And that music score.
Yeah, seeing this as a kid, especially a sci-fi loving kid, is great. Re-watching it as an adult, not so much. A bit of nostalgia amid a host of murky and dated stuff.
That meth reference - HILARIOUS!
Why did they program the robots to scream?
The Cygnus looks like a strike cruiser
I would put these robots against almost any other robots in movie history!!
Is it werid I always found Anthony Perkins hot. Even in Psycho. I know but I can't help it.
This movie was rather scary for me as a kid. And death in a Disney movie? Unheard of at the time.
If Eric Cartman did the voice Vincent this movie would be 10x better.
Subbed!
3:33 come in vincent
Disney shelved out a bundle for this dreary stupid space epic. One of the worst sci-fi films ever made
And I have been thinking about what has he been eating for the last 20 years. Seriously.
Or maybe it’s just swagger.
Jesus I can’t 😂😂😂😂😂
I watched this review because I have the book by Alan Dean Foster.
For me, The Black Hole is unwatchable. It exemplified the huge rut Disney had dug for itself.
My favorite Disney live action movie😃
They shot Vincent 😂😂😂😂
I wonder if Roddy got the job as the voice because he was boinking Anthony Perkins in real life
Lavern Merriweather That’s unreal. And I always thought Roddy McDowell seemed like the British Anthony Perkins.
Wow, that is one shit-looking robot right there.
1979 ? looks like something from the 60s
One of those robots is clearly a snazzy hairdresser
Know we know. And knowing is half the battle! -G.I. Joe
Dude dead space but with a black hole and a robot
Nevermind
Flubber
You are funny as hell
Max is calculon fror Futurama!!!!
How 9.1k views but 29 comments
Watching it right now lol
This is so funny.
It's frustrating when someone makes an almost good movie.
Fun

I saw this movie lol, thats bad.
This movie was bad on so many levels.
