  • Hands up if your training only ever consists of running, running and more running? We're sometimes guilty of that too. After all it's very tempting - and sometimes easier - to focus on the thing you love most. But if you want to improve your fitness and keep training fresh, there are big benefits to mixing things up and taking some of your sessions off two feet.
In this video we partnered up with Wattbike (wattbike.com/gb) and sought the expert help of Wattbike’s Jamie Pringle, to look at how runners might benefit from sometimes jumping off the tarmac and into the saddle.
Jamie is the Former Head of Science at British Athletics and former Lead Physiologist at the English Institute of Sport. So he knows a thing or two about training smart.
And he talked us through the potential training benefits and set us a few excellent workouts you can try at home.
So if you fancy freshening up your training mix. Here’s how jumping on a bike - like the Wattbike Atom - could help.

As an owner of a Wattbike and a runner I have waiting for someone to make a video on this. So helpful, thanks a lot..

Good video, did you manually program the workouts or can you take these directly from the Wattbike app?

Hi Oliver, these workouts were done manually, I actually just followed them written on my hand rather than creating sessions to follow in the app.

Would love a bike like this. Can this be carried out on say a rowing machine or concept 2 Ski Erg. Would like to combine other types of sessions to help with my running.

Hi Nicholas, you can certainly take the principles discussed here and apply them to other machines and cardio workouts.

To use a wattbike, do you need to buy and ipad to programme your session?

You can ride without data on a screen but can also use a phone
