Bismarck had the one quality that Napoleon lacked: he knew when to stop.

I think their contrasting backgrounds are the reason. Napoleon and his family, starting as outsiders and upstarts could only be transformed into an imperial family by pushing everything to the limit. Bismarck was born into privilege.

I heard of Otto Von Bismark in history class about the struggle for partition of Africa. This man was able to call European powers to gather in Berlin for a conference that led to division of Africa into colonies. The fact that he was able to prevent war among Europeans over African colonies was enough for me to be fascinated with his intellect.

The full Bismarck quote is actually "Jena came twenty years after the death of Frederick the Great; the crash will come twenty years after my departure if things go on like this".
Jena-Auerstedt was the decisive battle in which Napoleon crushed the Prussian armies under Frederick William III. It led to the effective crippling of Prussia as a power in Europe.
He was comparing himself to Frederick the Great, and he basically was. Frederick held off the forces of Europe during the 7 years war, (not that one), sponsored the enlightenment, and was a brilliant composed and writer.

Bismarck‘s personality is in my personal opinion quite typical German. I, being a German, have already met quite a few people with a character like that and it’s always fun. For us Bismarck is one of the most popular historical figures and if not only for his iconic character but also for his achievements. He surely didn’t do everything right and also did bad things but I can’t help but feel like he could be seen as some kind of embodiment of Germany personality-and behavior-wise ^.^'

As a german, the most exceptional thing Otto von Bismarck did, was to create a social system for the working class. Well he did it so they wouldn't rise up like in other countries, but this system was the predecessor for the health and social justice system we have in germany today. And that system is something we can be proud of.

My favorite quote from Bismarck comes from a letter to his wife Johanna:
"Today I was at General Gerlach's, and while he was lecturing me on treaties and monarchs, I saw as in the garden under the windows the wind was digging in chestnuts and lilac blossoms and heard the nightingales and thought, if I stood at the window of the dining room with you looking at the terrace, and did not know what Gerlach was talking about."
In my opinion it is remarkable to hear such poetic and loving words from the same man, who is always one-sidedly portrayed as "Chancellor of Blood and Iron".

And you talking of the cathedral, reminded me of a local myth in Aachen about it being built by the devil himself. According to the myth the devil was asked to help finish the cathedral and he would do so in exchange for the first soul going through the door of the cathedral. The popularity of Aachen outsmarted the devil though and sent in a goat, the devil then got angry, slammed the door shut and lost one of his fingers in the process.

Duels weren't to the death, but really instituionalized in German university fraternities. The gaining of a scar, was a badge of honour and gave social status and the favour of the ladies^^
Foreign tourists visiting Germany in the late 19th century were shocked to see the students, generally with their student corps/fraternity, at major German universities such as Heidelberg, Bonn, or Jena with facial scars - some older, some more recent, and some still wrapped in bandages :D :D :D

Saying Bismarck is the most influential in creating the Europe of WW1 is akin to saying Henry Kissinger is responsible for most large scale wars from the 70s onward.

German unification and nationalism actually was a movement of the liberals in until Bismarck adpoted it for the conservatives around the 1860s. So yes as a monarchist he was quite oposed to German unification in the 1840s since it was the parliament in Frankfurt that pushed for it but only for a constitutional monarchy where the Kaiser/King would only be a formal head of state.
Bismarck is also not really directly responsible for the system of alliances that backfired in WW1. One of Bismarcks great doctrines was to ensure that Russia and France never ally. And he managed that one quite well by forming the Drei Kaiser Bündnis (pact of the three emporers) with Russia, Austria and Germany. It were people after him that oposed Russia's interest enough to drive them out of this. Bismarck was also firmly oposed to any drive from the German Reich for territorial expansion.
Question is of course could he have oposed German coloniaism? It was a hughe movement and Bismarck had a tendency to rather join and steer the wagon rather than to be run over by it. Sam with keeping Russia happy at some point Russia's interest would clash with Austria's it just happened after Bismarck. Still in principle Bismarck had a better grasp on what Germany's interests to keep stability and peace should be than those who made descisions leading up to WW1.

Your pronunciation of Aachen is actually really close.
Personally, I'd swallow/not pronounce the e more often than not and the ch is softer unless you're Swiss (though that takes practice, I guess) but overall it's quite good!

I lived right across Bismarcks appartment during his university years. So here a fun fact: Bismarck got in such a lot of trouble and jail, that the town of Göttingen (were he "studied") decided to exile poor Bismarck. So the clever bastard took a small house right on the citywall. Thus he was "exiled". Just Google "Bismarckhäuschen".
