7:06 Okay so the Fallujah headshots thing is actually really interesting. Basically, the US military collects data on everything (it’s one of the reasons so many inventions come from military tech) and that includes how enemies die. In the battle, way, WAY more headshots than normal were happening, even compared to other times the Marines fought. So it wasn’t just that Marines are great shots, since they compared to their own numbers. Something has to cause it, and they worried it was summary executions, which would be a war crime. However, it was actually because they had better optics with more zoom and a red dot along with the fact that when people shoot out of windows they often only show their head. These factors shift and skew the distribution (respectively for each) from what you’d expect and accounts for the change. Basically, the new equipment for the marines was so much better and so well-suited to the urban environment, that its effect was just way bigger than anyone expected.
I believe this was also around the time that the Mark 12 rifle pattern began widespread circulation of the US armed forces, which I think was an additional part of it. Basically, the Mk. 12 rifle platform was a modification of the AR15/M16 that provided a much higher accuracy compared to the standard issue M16 rifles (I heard somewhere that the accuracy standard in the US military is about 4 MOA, or a roughly 10 cm shot spread at 100 meters) making accurate shots out far beyond normal engagement distances a breeze. Couple that with the widespread adoption of ACOG sights and more durable medium-range scopes for pseudo-DMR rifles like the Mk. 12, the entire US military grew more confident and competent shooting at larger distances. There’s more to longer range shots than just that, but its not really something I know about (like the adoption of heavier bullets for special applications) and when they were implemented, so I won’t talk about that
My dad was a Marine, I learned all I could about his beloved Corps, then I went and joined the Army because he told me I'd get promoted faster(he was right lmao)
As someone who loves history I've always been fascinated with the Marine corps the Barbary pirates story and then come the American Civil war and I figured out one of my favorite generals next to Washington was in the Marines Robert E Lee. Marines are bad ass.
I didn't know about the Marine Corps' birthday until becoming a marine. Also paws you being romanaian you would likely be able to keep up with the marines when it comes to drinking.
Can you confirm if this is true or did I just here some bs tradition. On the Marine Corp birthday they cut the cake with a sword. Then the oldest Marine present has the first bite/piece, it is then handed to the youngest Marine present. Basically symbolizing the older Marines passing on wisdom to the next generation of Marines.
@KaoretheHalfDemon yes thought the only time i went to Marine Corps ball was as a working party and didn't stay cause I was gonna go help a friend move his mom. The venue was in the mall of america, and the move was in hudson Wisconsin, so I left as soon as possible to get to Wisconsin
Paws you are a lovable chaotic gremlin and we all love you for it! As an Air Force veteran I tried drinking with some marines on the marine corps birthday and it’s definitely one of the drunkest I’ve ever been in my life! 😂
😂😂 no freaking way the first lady just said the Marines aren't even human their animals. God damn i love it. 😂😂😂 What the f*** are the Marines Elnor Roosevelt said their animals
I don't think it is an official national holiday where businesses are supposed to close for the day. They don't force close businesses for the birthday's of the differing branches of the military during each year.
@@dobber43 There is a lot our society and people do to support and recognize service vets. I don't think it is safe or proper to raise politicians or service vets into some sky higher class to be nearly worshiped by the civilian population. That would subvert the character and purpose of our country. Vets are citizens too and many civilians who haven't served could/would serve, so do they need to serve before being able to not need to grovel, scrape, and worship the ground a fellow citizen Veteran walks on? This isn't feudal Japan during the time of the Shogunate class system, it's America. We have tons of holidays, memorials, vet support non profits , and veterans benefits to honor them for their service and sacrifices as well as people readily thanking them for their service, but that doesn't mean equal citizen Veterans deserve utter deification. If that is the price they would demand for their service of the civilian population then other citizen civilians would do the job in their place instead. Don't get to high on the horse about Vets, they are meant to serve the people not the other way round. To their credit most Vets are humble people so I don't think they themselves would support the addition of shutting down business on the days of the birthday of each branch.
A bit late to the "party," but about that damned Mariah Carey song: I worked retail for two and a half years. Before that, when my grandmother was still with us, she would regularly have the TV turned to the Hallmark channel. And around mid-November, that damned song was played every single commercial break on that channel, and was played about every other song in the store I worked at. This led to me hating that song with a *PASSION*. Having been out of retail for the majority of the past 2 years, I've come to hate it less. Now I'm working somewhere that won't ever have that song playing, and I am very grateful for that. My girlfriend likes the song, though, so I do have to deal with it once every year(She's really thoughtful, limiting it to once a year), but no more than that.
If i remember correctly the Taliban or Alqida were the ones who complained that the Marines where executing people when the military did that investigation because you know terrorists always lie even though there the ones not following the Geneva Conventions. And that was why the investigation was launched when the chain of command concluded there findings they ignored the terrorists every time they cried about whatever war crime the military committed because it was a lie. But yeah the Marine Corp birthday is fucking awesome
First time I ever got drunk it was with a bunch of marines, The Fat Electrician was not wrong, you NEED to drink with those people at least once. Couldn’t see my hand in front of my own face and it’s the only time I’ve ever been that shitfaced. 10/10 review.
fun fact the US Marine corps logo shows north/south America continent, while the royal marine corps shows other side of the globe. symbolizing where ever you go marines cover the globe.
Couple things you got wrong in the end. Firstly, if you celebrate the Marine Corps birthday and you don't drink, you definitely will be. Secondly, there is no such thing as a Marine celebration and chilling out in the same sentence. Lastly, if you hang out with the Marines, they are good for 3 things: If you want something dead, stolen, or pregnant, they are your guys to ask. That's all, Merry Christmas!!

I am a Marine Vet and my family laughed when I told them that Iraqi story. Although, we are not above padding our story.
