- In this episode of HUNTR Podcast, we bring on Jason Sumners, Director of the Missouri Department of Conservation, to discuss a hot topic we've been focused on recently, Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD.) Jason has a ton of experience in wildlife management and has worked for MDC since 2008. As hunters, we're asking the difficult questions around CWD and what the solution is for a healthy deer herd moving forward. The truth is, it's not as black and white as you'd think it would be. After years of collecting data and a lot of money invested into CWD, they're still looking for an answer. We want to thank Jason for coming on the podcast and sharing his knowledge on a sensitive subject. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

You guys are awesome, hope you stay genuine and get as famous as possible. I’d rather listen to you guys than most hunting podcasts. Start filming your hunts and I will watch
We needed a Missouri hunter talking to this dude. Holy smokes did I have some questions. Theres a lil smoke in the room
Getting hunters to shoot doe is mind boggling to me. Yet, everyone always says thier meat hunters 🤷♂️
Right???
It’s become too much of a sport and less of a natural process of life. Big money ruins everything
85 to 110 for butchery doesn't help either or atleast I don't think
@@mountainflower1791 that's why I process them myself
@@veteranoutdoorsman9978 me too , I got the 1.5 grinder along with slicers and dehydrators ...but now most of these hunters won't even skin out a deer anymore
Great to get an interview with an inside voice of conservation, keep up the good work!
Maryland has the “ earn a buck “ rule as well in place !! Kill 1 Buck then you need to harvest 2 does then you can use the other Buck tag in rifle but obviously you can use your bow , but Maryland dose offer a 2nd bonus Buck tag only available in certain counties and sections depending on if private or public !
Finally someone in the Conservation department saying theres minimal risk to humans. Most use it to fear monger.
I know this is a Missouri based conversation, but being a couple of PA guys, one thing I wished PA did is for their late season after Christmas, allow Inline Muzzleloaders along with the flintlocks. I get the tradition aspect of it but for a more effective way to shoot doe or even a late season buck I feel having the ability to use an Inline would be huge! Love the podcasts, genuine good listening on all of them!
My parents live in 5c where we have extended firearm season after Christmas for antler less deer . There are so many shed bucks that get shot it’s not even funny
@@hoaoutdoorsI could definitely see that being the one big issue is shed bucks being shot. I know mistakes happen and things sometimes happen very quickly but to me that is something that could be prevented with a good pair of optics. Now that’s just my opinion, I just think all together that in other WMU’s the use of an inline could help.
@@CodyRemaleyI am not saying it’s a bad thing I just giving a heads up to be careful what you wish for that’s all.
@@hoaoutdoors I understand, and respect your thoughts on it and the example you provided with 5c. It’s something that could be a good thing and it also could be a very very bad thing. I doubt it’ll ever happen anyhow lol good luck this season 👍
Need time stamps.
Great podcast! It would be awesome to see someone from wisconsin sometime.
One problem with the surveys (and its self inflicted by hunters) is guys either dont have their email address on file or dont check their email. Then they complain they didn't get surveyed. These surveys are also posted on the mdc website but people dont participate then complain about decisions made. Makes no sense at all. If guys are concerned they need to participate.
Lord knows I participate in the surveys, but my responses fall upon deaf ears...
@@heathhenry6083 what type of things are you suggesting they do that isn’t happening?
@@bowhuntingforlife Removing rifle season from the rut, out of state tags and creating a lottery system, predator bounties. Its not just for deer, but turkey too.
@@heathhenry6083 removing rifle from the rut was addressed in this podcast.
@@bowhuntingforlife uh... yeah.... they still have no plans to do anything..... they just want deer killed plain and simple. A liberal 4 month season to kill as many deer as possible.
In wisconsin, your second buck has to be taken in the rifle/muzzle season.
I think part of the reason for doe harvest problems is butchery prices 85 to 110 a deer ..i do my own luckily
It is a big problem. It’s generally at least $125 now or more.
There needs to be more doe only seasons to get doe killed. Glad pennsylvania has the early muzz and youth rifle seson for doe. But having a statewide rifle doe season, tagged on for a weekend somewhere wouldn't hurt. Concurrent buck and doe seasons don't help those who hold out till the last second to shoot doe. By that time deer are already pressured and nocturnal and tags go unfilled.
I miss the 3 day doe season it was so damn fun
I was born in 2000 so I miss the doe only season but I remember the story’s that used to be told about that. Would love that
I wonder how much these administrators actually use public opinion to make policy instead of using biologist’s recommendations to do what’s actually beneficial for the herd.
An issue with antlerless harvest is theres still landowners that are old school and won't allow doe harvest on their property because they believe it will destroy the population. I come across this allot in Missouri.
@@veteranoutdoorsman9978 we are landowners in Missouri. The biggest factors stopping me from harvesting more does is accessibility and cost for donations. I keep two deer a year usually for myself but past that we need a better donation system like they talked about.
@@bowhuntingforlife I get that. You can only eat so many
@@veteranoutdoorsman9978 yeah, Covid inflation made share the harvest much less effective.
Wisconsin hasn't had earn a buck for a decade.
I am not fully accepted of cross guns here & am not fully moving on lol (jokes I guess) & get rifle season tf outta the rut. Talking about ‘getting the most hunters out in the most exciting time’.. man they’re gonna hunt whatever time you set the season wether it’s the most exciting time or not. & can shoot 2-350 yards maybe more anyways, they’re gonna shoot something eventually if they actually enjoy it & want to. ‘I’d love to have a big buck behind every tree but’ .. BUT!!?! But what dude cmon 😂😂 let the people who love the shit & spend all the money & time they can out there get the benefits. Instead of the drunk orange army running around throwing their Busch cans in the ditches shoot all the big ones from acrossed a couple fields
@@jinsennave2174 data is not showing that would be the case. Most hunters are not die hard hunters. Most are rifle season hunters only. The biggest problem we face is losing hunters numbers to where we can’t keep the herd balanced. If we move rifle season it may cause a huge amount of casual hunters to not participate anymore and that’s a big problem.
@@bowhuntingforlife the casual hunters ain’t out there shooting any does so it ain’t helping at all. They’re only going out 1-4 times a year & shooting a big buck. That ain’t balancing the herd
@@bowhuntingforlife eh, not really a problem. I don't buy the hoopla about hunter numbers declining and hunting going away. Lease prices sure don't reflect! Lots of hunting companies and products out there selling stuff to hunters. I think we have plenty of hunters and need to focus on quality of experience which will increase hunter participation. The reason people quit hunting is poor experience. Poor experience is due to not seeing deer in the field and over crowded public land by other hunters. High lease prices and high cost of recreational land prices.
@@thehuntersight7548 I agree with you that the quality of experience matters but that’s a separate factor which also applies to more hardcore hunters and not novice ones like a majority of rifle season hunters likely are. I know a lot of novice rifle only hunters that only hunt one weekend a year and if rifle season was pushed back possibly wouldn’t participate at all.
The hardcore hunters are more effected by the quality of experience effects because it’s hard to go backwards in your deer hunting goals. Novice hunters just shooting does and smaller bucks care less.
Jesus these government employees are really good at moving their mouths without saying anything meaningful
Not even a 3-hour pod cast come on guys......😅
Sumners is a piece of shit state worker he doesnt like to answer for his bullshit
😅😅😅😅
Xbows laws are always about the money, Best way to increase does harvested is to give an incentive. Make Missouri a one buck state unless you kill "x" amount of does to earn your second and third buck tags. I think you guys are right on the money with your suggestions and appreciate the questions.
This guy thinks killing all deer within a mile or 2 area to contain cwd spread by being surgical is the definition of kicking the can down the road. The prion is in the ground for decades at a minimum
How would yall feel if Illinois employed his cwd surgical tactics around your Illinois farm and killed all your deer?
How would yall feel if Illinois employed his cwd surgical tactics around your Illinois farm and killed all your deer?
So...won't ehd help eradicate cwd if it's so devastating?
Thank goodness for Jared and i hope you guys have Dr. Seabury on to talk about his latest findings
In illinois back in the 90s the DNR always said Shoot a doe so the herd wont grow...We need more does not less these days here.
They always sound the same very robotic
The processing is definitely an issue. Mine stopped because to many of the hunters suck, just a holes. So the wife and I bought everything to do it ourselves. Between the license fees and prep time. No way I'm donating meat
You might surprise yourself. I understand the time and money it takes to set up processing. And after a little practice, you might find that you'll need to donate meat because you have more than you need.
@@toddstewart9437 I only hunt PA, usually only 2 tags. We make everything from meat sticks to dog food
