The 9 car consists on the 3 were discontinued when the services returned to normal after 9/11/01. Apparently there were enough cars available due to delivery of the R142 and R142A to operate 10 car trains on all A division lines except the 7 and the 42nd St. shuttle.
Way back in the day the 3 line R62As had blue stickers, while the 1 line has red stickers, R62 on the 4 had orange stickers and the the R62A on the 6 had the yellow stickers
@Dagamez DM Now the R62AS 6 trains has the Green 🍏 stickers on them . No more yellow 🟡 stickers on them. The R62S still have those orange 🍊 stickers on them from the Jerome Ave 4 line.

imo the most obvious difference is that when you are riding, the r62 lights will periodically turn off on third rail gaps whereas that doesn't happen on r62as.

Another difference between R62 and R62a is on the destination roll sign on the window has words saying example manhattan and south Ferry on top of each other on the R62a. But on the R62 it has the words in a straight line. And also you are right about the trains from the 1 line at 1:37 you can clearly tell it has been a 1 train. And the window frame is more flat on the R62A then the R62. The R62 doors has a two squared handle creator on the doors.
#3 train must use there own R62 cars equipment not the 1 trains equipment therefore a strip map sticker was displayed indicating 1 train on it! It’s confusing for other passengers and tourists too!
P Jay maybe the 3 can permanently use R62As from the 6. And then Kawashaki can make more R188s for the 6. And then for the rest for the 7 so that way the 6 and 7 can have 100% R188s. And one R62A can go on the 1 to replace the one set R62. So then the R62 would retire.
Not true they would simply open the doors in the front section only just as on the current R62 consists. They were doing this on the 1 at the old SF loop station until the new SF station finally reopened in June.
As a former MTA employee for 18 years i have seen them all. The difference between the R62 and R62A'S are the different propulsions and rollsigns. The R62 trains have a much brighter headlight system than the R62a's.
Kevin Chen One is made made by Kawasaki, The other is made by Bombardier, One has an Led Display, and the other one doesn't, I'm not sure about that tho

R62s are assigned to 3 now, the one difference I can say that all the rollsign bullet routes on the R62 are shown as (3) (sometimes a different) R62As don’t have all the bullet routes shown on the roll sign as they are only shown in used cabs, R62’s rollsign bullet are shown even with unused half cabs.

The R62 and R62A have different air brake systems. Also I notice that the interior lighting appears to be brighter on the R62A.

I vividly remember those R62s (on the 3) used to run on the 4 line.
The R62As used to have Yellow Yard stickers under the yard plate in 2001. And right now the R62As have red and on the 6 it’s purple.

Also mention the fact that most R62A rollsigns in between cars are blanked out, while most R62's display a (1) or a (3) rollsign (mostly 3)
