    This is the best Worm composting video ever seen, especially for beginners.
    I have had African nightcrawlers for about a year and their castings are superior! They're multiplying like crazy and do a great job getting rid of the food scraps quickly. Urban worm bag I have is falling apart so I think I'll try a couple of the deep totes. Thank you!

      You asked this question 3 years ago, but for anyone who’d like to know, when you feed the worms, they go to where the food is. So you’re supposed to start to only feed them from one side for two weeks or so and the other side will be clear and you can harvest the worm castings, then repeat on the other side.
      This is why I don’t like his approach of throwing a ton of food in the bin right away. Every other video I’ve seen only puts in as much food as they can digest in a week, because 1. You don’t want the food to rot and 2. If there’s food all over the bin, it makes it super hard to make them go to one side (in order to harvest castings on the other side).

  • @suffolkshepherd
    @suffolkshepherd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Good video! Easy to understand. Is there a video to show harvesting the castings? Do You just move the worms every so often? Thanks!

    Dirt, compost, cardboard, roll, coco coir, kitchen scraps, paper towels, bread etc, greens on top... sit for a few days 3/4 days, diatomaceous earth around bin to deter ants etc, add worms then put coco coir on top. (Written to come back to later) :)

      I’m not sure if it’s possible to keep their production up to the same levels as spring/summer. I’ve kept mine in the house before and they kept eating but I also had to deal with black soldier flies hatching & flying about. You could keep your bin in a garage or shed & surround it with pine shavings or straw. Hope this helps

      I actually built a small wooden structure around my dryer exhaust behind the house. I used some weather proofing plastic to make it retain heat, and then some plywood on the outside so it doesn’t annoy the wife. If you run your dryer like we do with 4 kids, the soil stays around 70-74F in the winter.

    Never add any processed foods in this. An Yeast in the bread expands abnormally in worms . Also bottom holes made are too many and too big. Leche the liquid coming out bottom must be collected as the best fertilizer.

    • @dyoepster
      @dyoepster 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      99% of the time the liquid that is underneath bins (if saved) is anaerobic and is not very fertile. worm tea is made by aerating active compost in a bucket of water for like 24 hours or more.

    • @Liam2718
      @Liam2718 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mybusiness1500 That liquid is not toxic it is called leachate also known as "worm pee" it is one of the best liquid fertilisers but you have to dilute it with water, 1 part leachate 9 parts water as a wheat tea colour to get the best results!

    • @JWHealing
      @JWHealing ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Liam2718 No one in the know calls it worm pee. 1. Worms apparently don't urinate. 2. Perhaps you heard someone say worm tea, but technically worm bin runoff is worm leachate. Some use worm leachate BUT it can be high in anaerobic bacteria which are not good for soil life & your plants. As a commenter above noted, AERATED worm tea is really what is best for the garden because it is rich in aerobic bacteria that help the soil life and therefore your plants. Aerated worm tea is made by suspending a bunch of active worm castings in a bucket of water and aerating the water with an air pump and stone for 24 hrs. Some also add black strap molasses at the start of the aeration to further increase growth of beneficial bacteria. If you search aerated worm tea on youtube you'll find many how to videos.

    I dug holes about 1 1/2 ft deep and wide for compost, mainly to put food scrap in holes out of fear of attracting critters, then mound garden waste on top, n cover with plastic-always adding food to the bottom(approx every 2wks). Once a year i clear out the hole by scraping the edges. Now, it is kind of hard to decipher where the compost ends and earth begins but seeing the egg shells on the edges guided me. The amount of gigantic worms that I found in the hole was astounding. They had mainly took to the bottom n edges where it was the dampest. The hole was moving like a living organism. I think I scooped out a near pound of them and tossed them on the other compost pile (with a hole at bottom). Idk but I’d say the compost in the hole is probably where the best stuff is.
    I’m not sure, but it seems Ive made my own version of a worm bin. 🤷🏻‍♀️😄

    You actually want to drill a few holes on the side for air flow, oxygen. I have had a worm bin for years & when something goes wrong in the bin the worms will usually climb upwards to escape, not downwards. Turned out I had way too many castings & way too many worms which makes
    them migrate elsewhere - & that is upwards. Started a new bin & that fixed the problem. Be sure to watch them carefully. If they are climbing up the sides - remember, something is wrong. Could be too hot also. Find the solution quick or they could all die on you.

Are you using bread that has all those chemicals in it? I'm just curious how it affects things. The reason I don't eat it is because it makes me sick to my stomach. However I do have it in the house because other members of my family will eat certain breads. Just because I don't it it doesn't mean I don't have it available so is that what I would be using? Thanks Jag

    I would never put that much food in my worm bin......unless u have a huge colony of worms. If u only have a small colony it would take months to break all that down.
    Worms love watermelon, cantaloupe, tomatoes, avocados, cucumbers. And, most veggies once they get to that moist squishy type of consistency. U can blend them to allow the worms to process it faster. Add sand. Or I prefer egg shells.
    If u are looking to make a worm bin. I would continue to look for a better resource as a go to on worm bins.

      If you feed on one side only then the worms migrate to that side within a few days and you can harvest the castings from the non-food side. So you won't get many worms in w/your castings. If you are really concerned I think there's a fine enough sifter where you could sift out most of the worms from the castings but that's extra work.

I also have a fish tank in my house that I keep the turtles in during the winter time but in the warm times I have a back yard pin that I made for my pet turtles....

    Do you have advice for apartment dwellers on how to start a DIY worm bin?

      You can start one inside with another lid below to catch the worm tea.

    So after a month or so of doing this you have worm castings. So do you access it? Do you just dump the bin in your garden and pull the worms out to make a new worm bin?

    isnt this going to smell because you added so much food at one time

      I usually do not see people add so much food at once in videos. Generally the rule I've heard is you only add as much as will get fully eaten within a week.

    Great clear video…one question I see a lot of videos of making worm bins and yours is awesome but I am not certain as to when to add or how to add casting or to your garden…would you elaborate that part please.

    Any issues with the worms in the winter? I’m concerned they would freeze when it’s below 32 for more than a few hours. Or is there enough soil in the box to insulate them?

    Bread is cooked and contains oil. Is that okay?
