  • The Vietnam War was a new kind of war for the United States. One thing that did not change, however, was the dedication and ingenuity of cryptologists on the air, land, and sea. See how Soldiers like Spec. James "Tom" Davis of the U.S. Army's 3rd Radio Research Unit provided technological assistance and training to the South Vietnamese, giving his life performing his duties. Many like Spec. Davis faced new challenges against what seemed to be an invisible enemy. Yet, they did their duty effectively and courageously.

I was a 98B Cryptologist with ASA 1972-1974. In 1975-76 the 98B MOS was transferred to NSA. I became an Infantry Officer. I retired from the Army in 2013 - last school trained 98B on active duty.

@@Waltuh.69 Not sure what you meant - "huh". I enlisted in the Army on March 20th 1971 and was sent to Ft Devens MA to become a 98B Cryptographer in the Army Security Agency (ASA). After graduating the 98B course on 20 March 1972 I was assigned to the 303rd ASA Battalion Ft Hood TX. I got off active duty in 1974 and went back to school at UW-Madison and joined the ROTC program. In Aug 1977 I graduated from college with a BS and was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant. I returned to active duty Oct 1977 and then left Active Duty in March 1985. I returned to reserve duty from 1985 to 1999 where I did not retire. In 2007 I was recalled to Active Duty and did 3 tours in Iraq. I finally retired on August 4th 2013 at age 61. OK?

Lots of my buddies were O5B. I finally learned the code and passed 13WPM in 1982. We had lots of guys in the 303rd who had been stationed in Japan and were trying to go back. Must have been good duty.

Wow! The only Spec 6, 7, or 8 I ever met were in the medical service Corps. By 1972 all SPC 6,7, & 8 in ASA were made NCOs - SSG, SFC, & MSG. Hat's off to your dad. I was on levy to PhiBai 3 times but never went.

The RED TEAM is doing well, far better than the BLUE TEAM is. Best defense is to cut your CAT5 cable.
