    XC is mentally the toughest sport. Anyone can run, but it takes a real tough cookie to be able to mentally withstand a race like this. Great job to all!!!!

      Triathlon is harder cause you gotta swim and race your bike then still have the mental strength to race a 10k or even more in some races

    This race changed my mentality towards running, after seeing Cooper collapse, that inspired me to work that hard everytime I have a race or workout. And as a result, I've went unconscious twice and threw up over 10 times, but my times are the best they've ever been. Respect to Cooper ☝️

    I'm a BYU alumni so I'm very happy with Mantz! Northern Arizona is also in the west so that was good. Cooper Teare is an inspiration. I hope he's recovered.

    NAU, Conor Mantz repeat repeat....... This was better than NCAA Div 1 Football Championship(s) or March Madness...... X Country is an Open and Available sport from Div 1 to Div 3. It's a shame that the big Div 1 schools dismiss this sport as irrelevant...... It's far from irrelevant....based upon the pounding that NAU has given to every other Major Div 1 school for the last x # of years... What is this National Title # 7?? for NAU... phenomenal !! And Conor Mantz is the poster boy for XCountry athletes a 4.0 average in his major (engineering) absolutely brilliant..and courageous....

      @@JakeRichardsong his upper body and face are never relaxed it’s true, but I’d say his lower body is pretty fluid. High back kick, doesn’t bounce when he runs. Compare that to Mo Farah who most would say looks like liquid when he runs (in a good way), but bounces too much for the roads.

    An Australian at the olympics this year was with the lead pack up until the final 400m and the exact same thing happened and he ended up coming last. Some of these guys are just built different pushing their bodies beyond the limit, incredible

    I was there. Great race by Mantz. Hicks from Stanford won 2 high school state xc 5k races on that course a few years ago.

      Yeah I dunno about how many 800 guys run 10k XC. In the Women's 6k? Sure, definitely a good number of those to fill up the 6th and 7th spots on teams.

      I think you would find most of the top guys in the race have solid 800 times. NA, NA, 1:49, NA, 1:48, NA, NA, NA, NA, NA,... I guess many of them haven't run it while in college, but given they are sub 4 milers, you could certainly expect a low 1:50 or high 1:40 out of them

    I'm sure it's not the NCAA's fault, likely ESPN or whomever produced/created the graphics. Henry Rono ran at Washington State University and won all those individual titles. Still the greatest distance runner ever to run in NCAA. @ 26:57 time stamp in the video.

    This is basically the highest tier of xc. There really is no professional cross country, the closest we get is the marathon or 10k. It would be amazing to have this in the Olympics

      There is the cross country world championships and, even though they can't compete, the European cross country championships.

      Your statement is actually incorrect. There are plenty of international cross-country competitions that lead up to the World Cross Country championships that take place in Europe.

      It's more cost effective than trying to work your way around 100 people trying to catch up to the front.

      @@dacoop49 For a very crowded field your point is taken. But in many races passing people is not a problem and 10,000m track athletes don't do it to any great extent. I do recall though in my CC races, if someone got 100m ahead of me at the start it was really hard to reel them in. We would commonly maintain the same distance for the whole race.
      The only example I can recall of a CC runner pacing himself was Paul Tergat in a World CC championships in the 1990's. He went from about 100th to win by a huge margin. But Tergat was very special.
      I think this problem is more complex than it initially seems. I'd be really interested to see if it has been studied rigorously to any extent.

    I believe XC is the toughest running events why because you have runners from multiple running disciplines competing together. Milers to marathoners competing in one race which really separates the men from the boys from State championships to the World championships.
    I remembered how mentally tough it is.

    For those of you who think it’s unfair that Conner Mantz is older than the rest of the field…. Sure I know he graduated high school in 2015. But for 2 years after high school he served a church mission and during that time he was not running competitively. And from what I believe he never had a 2017 XC season. Which makes it so that he can have a 2021 XC season. But since he did indoor and outdoor track in 2018, he won’t be running track for the 2022 season.

    Cooper can handle the 5K but the 10K is a bit too tough for him. It's not for everyone. he needs to stick with shorter races

    NAU is MY team - I've followed all their runners through their high school careers. What I want to know is where is COLE HOCKER!!!! He's the best Duck runner by FAAAAR!!! He's also beaten Mantz many time on the track and is the best 1500-meter runner in the US since he won the Olympic Trail (over the Rio gold medalist) and he's also the defending NCAA champ...he's even better at cross country!
