As I mentioned in my report on the Preview Build, Hyper Light Drifter's music is structured such that the individual pieces overlap and comprise a seamless whole. Because editing intricate mix albums is a hobby of mine, I couldn't resist playing with this material once I realized how it had been designed. I recorded long samples of every unique piece of music in the demo and built a 45-minute uninterrupted narrative from them. The arc largely follows the pacing of the game, but I took a few liberties that I felt better served the music in a standalone format.
Note that this mix is in no way intended to serve as a substitute for the official Hyper Light Drifter soundtrack (which did not yet exist when I made it). The final game has much more music than is contained within the Preview Build, and it is laid out in a very different fashion from what I've done here. Also, not all of the music that I sampled from the game is discretely available in full within the mix because I have blended tracks together in many places so as to take advantage of their overlapping relationships and to create a more interesting whole. My purpose here was not to replace the then-forthcoming legitimate soundtrack release but rather to demonstrate and harness the dynamic structure of the music in Hyper Light Drifter for a unique experience of my own expression; to pay tribute to these gorgeous electronic textures, melodies, and rhythms; and to give those who fell in love with the Preview Build or were otherwise excited about the game something to listen to over and over again during the agonizing wait of development.
Despite the pulsing tension of the middle section and the action beats towards the end, the album is overall a slow-building ambient experience best suited for headphones. There is a lot of detail here that may not be apparent during casual listening. Even pieces of music that do not directly intersect might still share a thematic base or flourish motifs, and I'd also like to think that some of the transitions, panning, and layering that I've built benefit from intimate attention.
This content is not and never will be monetized, and it will be removed without hesitation if requested by either Heart Machine or Rich Vreeland. Hopefully that will not happen since it represents a more complex and original effort than merely uploading the game's raw music would, but I suggest that you listen while you are able.

Just wanted to let you know that I listen to this every day when I work; it's basically the only music my laptop ever plays anymore. It's such an amazing track and your mix is *perfect*. Makes every day beautiful and mystical, and it's such good programming music.
Nevyn Bengtsson I'm the same way with music that grabs me; I really dwell upon it and listen to it over and over every day. The new album Wilderness by Makeup and Vanity Set is doing that for me right now. You might find it a good complement to Vreeland's work here, so I recommend giving it a try!

NightMargin Ah, interesting; I kind of think of that as the central theme as well even though you don't hear it until you get a fair ways into the demo. Which is awesome, actually! The musical equivalent of a late title card.
this song reminds me of the movie: The Bladerunner 1985 this sounds are perfectly nostalgic according to the premise of pixel art game! Congratulations to the creators of the soundtrack is note in 1000!
Well that was truly an experience I won't forget for a long time! With my Bose headphones cranked up to almost full volume I could literally feel the booming heartbeat sound inside my head!

Very cool analogue sounding synths here. Great texture. I am not a fan of ambient music usually, but this is very nice. Bought the game partly because of the soundtrack. Played for an hour and it looks very promising, but mysterious as shit. I don't understand what's going on, but I love it.

+kosmosyche It's part of its charm, I think. A bit like Dark Souls, it explains with words as little as possible and lets the enviroment show some clues so the player feels like exploring a mysterious universe.

***** Thanks! Unfortunately, I won't be providing a download link for the mix. I would love to, especially since I'm an audiophile and would rather have people hear the music in higher bitrates than TH-cam streams; however, I'm just not comfortable going that far in sharing Disasterpeace's music.
What I'm doing here is already on shaky legal-and perhaps even ethical-footing. I feel gratitude for the fact that no one has asked me to take the mix down as it is. Streaming it like this is an indirect and "protected" way to let people hear it, but offering a download link would be a step closer to giving away the original music and encroaching upon the forthcoming official soundtrack and its sales. That is something which I must avoid. I hope you can understand my reservations.

When i played this game i tought damn this music is like from It Follows ... Bam its the same band! I Love Disasterpeace!
I love the atmospheric quality of this soundtrack. Additionally there is just something about those intermittent warbling sounds in the beginning that, to me, is very reminiscent of a Zelda soundtrack especially windwaker. That is a compliment.
Just listening to this track makes me feel like I'm walking into the abandoned confines of an ancient temple courtyard set deep within a peaceful yet slightly ominous forest. It's as if the temple harbors a hidden power deep below the surface. Man, I can't wait to get this game! Thanks for posting this!

I think that description actually makes this project sound more technically complex than it really was as I didn't need to do any processing on the individual samples that I took from the game, unlike what I believe is meant by stem mixing. All of the work that I did besides the in-game recordings was in the arrangement of the tracks and creating the pans and fades needed to make them blend as I wanted. Thomas Witt Thanks! I'm not sure about mixing the full game. It depends on what form the official soundtrack release takes. If it does something very different from what I would do with a mix, then I might find myself interested in putting together my own interpretation just to have it exist; but it's very important that I don't infringe upon Disasterpeace's work or its sales.
It was one thing for me to do this when no official soundtrack existed yet and I was presumably only working with a slice of the full game's music, but both of those things will be different when the full game is out. There's also the possibility that other music in the game won't be designed to fit together like this is, making it a less interesting project to me.
...so I guess the best that I can say is we'll see when the time comes!

How in the world did you get the whole soundtrack before it's released?
+zevex747 I didn't, and this isn't the whole soundtrack. This is an album that I made by recording each of the unique music bits in the Preview Build from 2014 and putting them together as a narrative mix. You can read more about this in the video description.
There's more music in the final game, and the full soundtrack comes out on April 10th. Whatever it's like, it's sure to be very different from this, so consider this an alternate soundtrack of sorts.

+Andrew McDonald This is basically one long, complex track made out of unreleased material recorded from within a game's early demo, so there are no individual tracks (and no names). The official soundtrack comes out tomorrow (April 12th), and I'm sure you'll be able to find a track on it that contains the part of the music you're looking for. Well, it depends on what you consider to be a "song," I suppose. You *could* argue that all of the music that was present was a build-up to or a component of The Gauntlet (which is different in this original form), but I think that would be reductive and extremely ungenerous.
