I went to Father Martin Ashley in Havre De Grace MD. I got to know Father Martin while I was there in the 90s. I did confession with him and had several talks. He was an amazing man. RIP 🙏

Well done to you for staying sober .it's a monumental struggle at the beginning. , father martin turned everything around for me . His talk on alcoholism is the single most comprehensive and illuminating description of the nature of alcoholism and I still remember this being sober for 6 years that at the third month I was struggling so badly with the cravings and had managed not to drink that someone in AA congratulated me on not giving in, and that made me feel as if there was hope ! Small simple things and genuine kindness was what I experienced at AA and with other recovering addicts ! So well done . And if you are suffering from cravings these eventually pass . There really do and you get to a stage were having a drink is no longer the centre of your existence but it does take a while for your brain to recover because some of my thinking was still warped for quite a while when I stopped ,but that recovered too, you will find aspects of yourself you didnt know existed that are wonderful. And if I can offer some of what I learned find something you truly enjoy , reading, cycling, stamp collecting anything just one thing you enjoy and develop it . I always thought I couldn't draw and I'm not michael angelo, but I did discover some ability and became so immersed in it that hours could have passed when I was drawing . Just one thing that's all. Don't set your goals too high and don't make too many of them ! But keep going , there's a book someone suggested to me called 'one big tent' and it's about the atheists and agnostic way of doing the twelve steps. I'm not a believer in god a s a deity , i believe there is a higher intelligence and goodness which speaks through conscience, prayer and connection with others! That's my higher power. And it's worked letting go and letting god. So keep going it's honestly really worth it!

Sober 42 years, father martins guidelines were the beginnings of my sobriety. In the first months I would put a tape on and listen . It was the only way I could get any sleep. The information and his obvious guidance and love gave me hope of recovery.❤

Oh, my word. He just described my first message. But the addiction was not alcohol but food. My first husband "ATE & SLEPT"! I was so lonely and cried often. Thinking something was WRONG with me that he did not want spend time with me or our son! The story get's worse in the fact that I was sober and decided to drink again after 13 years in this marriage. But that is NOT and NEVER WILL be his fault! I own that today. However, I do wish my "therapist" had told me about Al-Anon. I have just joined them... after 24 years sober in AA I am now in Al-anon.

I wish I had gotten more serious when I was 29. Now at 59, I am fearless. However, the pros and cons of working the steps at my age works out to, well, hindsight is 20 to 20. I was a sloppy, and stupid drunk. I hurt others simply by embarrassment.

  • @edcase3973

Moral is goodness. Right things usually reverberate with people. We live in a sinful world. People seek a feeling like love and pleasure, regardless of whether they use drugs or alcohol or not. So the key to living well, is to feel good about right where you are.

Father Martin puts the steps into simplicity. I do not know why people knock AA or attack it. Maybe the preferred treatment is Harm Reduction. Well the ultimate form of harm reduction is abstinence! My feelings are that the fear is the concept of God. I remember chatting with another addict and asking after dinner whether the night sky was nature or by design. After being told it was purely nature, I asked to put aside absolute belief, after all absolute belief kept them drinking, and just think whether it was possible, just possible in the slightest way, as he wasn't a scientist or expert, that it could be by design, he eventually said it could be possible. My response? "That is all you need to believe in a higher power."

  • @kevingreaux7133

The spirit, mind, and heart are already damaged by sin. Being a drunkard is a sin. People are immoral sinners even without being a drunkard and that is why we all need to be saved from sin through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

The steps I took to get sober were not in order...... But. Step four courage
    Step five honesty
    Step one surrender.
After doing 28 days, 113 meetings in 90 days. 2019 was the last time I attended an AA meeting. I need to hit a meeting, so I can get my 5 1/2 year coin. The thought of drinking doesn't exsist. But it is also terrifying. You can do it, it can be done, God bless you with strength to hold on to him, as he CARRIES you though it..... Amen.

The biggest part of my inventory is what was done to me. To see feel it touch it taste it. See how it has deeply made me feel and behave in my life. Forgive. Ask god to soften my ego to let these defective beliefs go. Daily if need be. Always In AA. Moving towards love and tolerance. Building self love and self acceptance. Then anger. Resentment. Envy. Self pity. Control. Neediness. Can subside. I won’t be doing the same tenth step over and over.
