    A Dream Turned Into An Ever Evolving Reality
    In 1960, Alex Jordan opened his dream house built atop a chimney of rock to the public. Over the years, Alex expanded his vision beyond the House and collected and built on a massive scale. What began as a lofty retreat with an awe-inspiring view has become a spectacular attraction known as The House on the Rock.
    For over 60 years, the House on the Rock has been a majestic work in progress. It began in 1945 when a man named Alex Jordan had a towering goal: to build a man-made retreat as awe-inspiring as the view from the rock upon which the house would eventually be built. From that spark of imagination, the House on the Rock has evolved to include displays and collections of the exotic, the unusual, and the amazing that can be viewed as three separate tours.

    I read Neil Gaiman’s book “American Gods” about 10 years ago. Some of the events in that book take place at The House On The Rock. I just realized about a month ago as I was re-reading “American Gods” that The House is a real place! Now, I’m dying to visit there!

      Same here. We read American Gods a long time ago and are huge Gaiman fans. When we realized that this place was close to us here in Chicago, we went right away. We’ve been a bunch now. It’s pretty awesome.

      It’s awesome. The first time we went I was blown away. They have a gift shop at the end, with some souvenir stuff. But, they also have a couple of books that they wrote on the place and a documentary. I bought all of them.
      We knew of the place from Neil Gaiman’s books, so had to check it out. We go multiple times a year now.
      Have you been?

    I was trying to describe house on the rock to someone recently and found it hard to do (haven’t been since I was a kid). This video captures it beautifully!

      That’s awesome! Thanks! Yeah we love that place. We’re in Chicago so it’s not that far away, but I’m always surprised how many people here have no idea what it is. We tell everyone to go.

    Visited with my parents at least a couple of times as a kid growing up. Personally, my favorite part of walking through the House was going through the Streets Of Yesteryear and looking in all the shop windows. Also really enjoyed the music room. If I remember right, there was also a Chamber Of Horrors exhibit, which my Mom at first wouldn't allow me to look at. After pestering her, she finally gave in. Remembered it showed the ways people were tortured and killed through the ages, such as by the Guillotine, the Rack, etc. Mannequins were used to show the people being tortured/killed. Some had red paint on them representing blood, which was gory to a boy. Wonder if this exhibit is still on display? Overall, I enjoyed my visits, and am glad the House is still open and operating. Sadly, not too far from this was another tourist location, called Little Norway, which is no longer operating, with the buildings either torn down or moved.

      The Chamber of Horrors exhibit isn't still on display, but they may have moved it to the Halloween exhibits they do. We unfortunately haven't made it during that time yet (Halloween is our favorite time of the year). We'll try to make it up there this season and see if they include it then. Thanks for watching!

      The whale in the Heritage of the Sea is INCREDIBLE. That and the organ room are really hard to describe the feeling you get when you first see them. It takes a moment fro your brain to register what's going on there. We've been a few times now, and just love taking our time and really looking closer at the stuff there. You'll notice something new every time.

      It really is one of the coolest and unique places you'll ever go to. And there are music machines and other mechanical devices throughout the entire place. When you get tickets to enter the House, you get some coins. You can also buy more from vending machines scattered throughout the House and grounds. Those you can use to play the different music boxes and devices. It's a complete sensory overload.

      If you’re a fan of the author Neil Gaiman, he uses this location in the book American Gods. It was also filmed at in the television series that was made from the book. Such a cool place. You really have to go to get the full experience.

    This brings back some great memories for me! I went to House on the Rock about 25-30 years ago when I lived in Wisconsin, but had forgotten so many of these great details about the house. I mostly remembered the stained glass and some odd structures. This makes me want to go back and see it again. I had totally forgotten about the Streets of Yesterday, The heritage of the sea, music of yesterday and the carousel. It's been so fun watching this and bringing back all those memories!

    • @lesserknownadventures
      @lesserknownadventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      I tell everyone around us that they should visit the House. We're big Neil Gaiman fans, so we've read about it in the American Gods book for years now, so I guess we had previous knowledge about it, but I'm surprised how many people that live here have never heard of it. When people ask what it's like there, I tell them they have to experience the place. As nice as it is having videos on it, nothing can do it justice. The Heritage of the Sea and the Organ Room's are mind blowing.
      I'm glad we keep bringing up Wisconsin memories for you haha! This weekend we're actually heading up to Cave of the Mounds on Saturday and maybe Mount Horeb on Sunday. It's the Cave's anniversary on Memorial Day, and we love the troll hunt of Mount Horeb. So we thought those would be great videos to create.

    Such a beautiful video!
    Thank you.
    This is one of my favorite places in the whole world, and has been since the field trips this gen x’er experienced as a kid. It has changed so much, and all for the better.
    It is just so surreal and weird that Neil Gaiman used the big carrousel as an inter dimensional portal in American Gods. There is a fun, brief video Starz made about that facet of the series they built out of his books.
    THotR is like the trippy, gothic older relative of one of my other favorite places, St. Louis’ The City Museum.
    A fun fact I only recently learned is that, while many of the dioramas and displays read as/ appear like museum installations, the posted placards of factoids are, in fact, entirely bullsh!t. This just makes me love the place even more.
    I’d wager that the drive to and from the location is equally as unusual and beautiful as the House, in its own bucolic, Wisconsin way.

    • @lesserknownadventures
      @lesserknownadventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much! I love how it came out in the edit. I wasn't sure at first with the music I cut to, because it's not the typical upbeat song and doesn't always hit on beat, but it works so well I think with the subject.
      Yeah we're huge Neil Gaiman fans and remember reading about this place in American Gods. Back maybe about 12 years ago we saw him do a live reading of some of his shorter stories, and just ramblings. He talked about the bizarreness and his fascination with the House on the rock. So when we moved to Chicago and realized it wasn't that far of a drive, we made it a priority to get up there. We try to go a couple times a year.
      We will definitely have to look into The City Museum! We've driven that way a couple of times, mainly when we were driving chunks of Route 66. So we never have had much time to explore. But being that it's about a 4 hour drive for us, we could just head that way and make a day of it.
      I love the fact that the placards are bs. That's awesome! I feel like every time we go, we see or learn something new. There's just way too much to take in in one day.
      And yes, the drive up there is nice. If you take the back way, which is what we always try to do. The highway is quicker, but then you miss the hidden gems that are tucked away. There's a hotel near there that we'd like to check out sometime. Each room is a different theme.

      If you have kids, visit the City Museum as soon as possible. There are passageways that only small bodies can access. My 11 yo loves it. Bring your knee pads. If you forget, they sell them in the gift shop.
      Fwiw, Taliesin is a cool side trip. It’s right around the corner from the House.

    • @lesserknownadventures
      @lesserknownadventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      We do, we have a 9 year old, so that'd be perfect. It's great because she's started catching the travel bug, and now during the week she's started asking where we're going next. Granted, it's because we usually let her pick something up from each place we go, so we have accumulated a mass of stuffed animals, but she's still excited, so that's pretty cool.
      I'll check out Taliesin. - I see it's the Frank Lloyd Wright home. We've actually seen this place, but haven't had a chance to check it out yet. Definitely on the list.

      @brentchristopher7363 It's definitely worth the trip. And yes, the Frank Lloyd Wright house is right near there. We haven't had a chance to check that out yet though. But it's on the list. There's actually a lot of really cool places in that general area. We did another video on Cave of the Mounds, which is about a half hour away, we really like that place too. And Mount Horeb is a neat town that has a troll theme. There's a restaurant called The Grumpy Troll that we like to go to. We'll be doing a video on Mount Horeb and that whole thing soon hopefully.

    • @lesserknownadventures
      @lesserknownadventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yeah I loved the way the music track worked out. We always joke that when editing you spend most of your time just looking for music.
      The camera on this video was the DJI Pocket 2. I had picked it up just before heading to the House. I like the camera, but you have to be really mindful of your walking and arm movement, as you can easily get bounce in your shots. I shoot with larger gimbals on hired work, so I'm pretty good at the "ninja walk" now. But I can still see the bounce in some of the shots. I do really like the movements though from this thing when done well. And it's so small. I just keep it in my pocket and it's always ready to go.

    • @lesserknownadventures
      @lesserknownadventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      I know you said you shoot with the GoPro 11. I was torn between that and the Pocket 2 when I picked this up. I also have thought about trying the GoPro Max. I've seen some really cool use of the 360 footage. I have an Inta360 One, but wasn't too impressed with that. But the Max looks way better.
