I have a problem, so when i added the 2 numerators together, i got the exact same number as the denominator.
Then i divided it, (how many 12's are there in 12 which is 1, then 1 x 12 = 12, 12 - 12 is 0)
What do i do now?

12/8 can be 3/2 because both are divisible by 4. So I came up with 5 and 3/2 😕.

This is also correct, but 3/2 can be written as 1 1/2, then you add the whole parts 5 and 1 so you get 6 then you combine whole part and fractional part to get 6 1/2. So now if you notice, 6 1/2 is 13/2 and 5 3/2 is also 13/2. Let me know if this helps.
