Active suspension test rig

  • My final year project for Level 8 Mechanical Engineering at Dublin Institute of Technology.
    The project aimed to show that the common spring mass damper system in a vehicle could be replaced my an electric motor controlled by a micro controller (Arduino) and and rack and pinion gear. The rack acts as the sprung mass which oscillates relative to the un-sprung mass (the main body of the test rig) which in this case is fixed. The use of the micro controller allows the stiffness and damping coefficient to be adjusted.
    This adjustability makes it very attractive to the automotive industry but also as a vibration absorber for industrial applications.
    The next stage of development for this test rig is to design and method of oscillating the un-sprung mass so as to simulate a road surface and analyse the reaction of the sprung mass to this.
