    1. Don’t grease a bendix drive. I am a moron. In fairness every starter I’ve pulled out of a vehicle has been oily, so the thought never crossed my mind not to oil/grease them.
    2. No, I'm not worried about the solder failing, but it won’t shock me if it does. I mean it may literally shock me… Anyway, I would have preferred to use a spot welder, but I don’t have one. If it fails, I'll fix it :)

    • @thomastallis7245
      @thomastallis7245 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Geoffrey Croker Almost every one of these motors I’ve restored have came into my possession because a person has greased, or oiled the bendix drive.
      As soon as you put that grease on, it thought, oh sh*!
      Then it didn’t retract with the battery on correct polarity.
      It’s an extremely easy mistake to make, and entirely logical given it’s a metal on metal part.
      I just found your channel, and will certainly be trying your electroplating technique. It’s funny, swearing seems to add enormous humour to a serious video!
      Peace from Edinburgh 🙏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    A quick tip to get those annoying clips back on. Just don't put them back on and hope it causes a fatal failure while in use so you know for sure you never have to deal with them again.

    Many years ago, a car was towed into my shop for a no crank condition. I pulled the starter off and found the brush holder had cracked and pulverized the brushes. It was a gear reduction starter, which were fairly new in those days.There was no way to tell what went where, so I got out the service manual and carefully installed a new holder and brushes, exactly like the illustration. When I installed the starter, it spun, but didn't crank the engine. This had the roller clutch starter derive. It engaged, but the starter was spinning backward. I took it back out and checked the brush arrangement against the manual again. Then the wind turned the page to the standard starter, without the reduction gear. They used the same illustration for both starters.

    This one took me back... the starters used in 60's Minis and '50's Morrys and Hillmans use a different pinion with the helix fully enclosed; M35G (or J) perhaps? The manual always said: no grease on the helix! We always called snap rings 'christian clips' because of the inevitable "taking in vain" when it flies off... :) Loving this series, thank you.

    It's a clever design, I don't know if it's more reliable than a modern starter with a solenoid to flick the gear out but it's certainly easier to jump with a cable from the battery when the original cable going behind the engine breaks and loses connection. I assume that's already on the list to replace but if it isn't I would highly recommend it. Been there, done that.

    Those bendix drive starter springs and gears are notorious for being a bugger to part. So much so I still have a specially made coil spring compressor from the '70s I'd use to replace the lighter return spring. These light springs rust away and then the gear flops about and doesn't disengage from the starter ring on the flywheel.
