@ultimateslinger9857 personally, id consider Unleashed to be part of the Adventure Era, as it was the last game that still maintained the old style of writing.
@@yderga8707technically it’s not apart of the Adventure era given that it was released in 2008 well after the Next-Gen Era started (which was in late 2006 starting with Sonic 06,) plus it has the same modern stylization as the other games in that era did. The reason the writing for Sonic is similar to the Adventure games is because Sonic in both titles were written by the same writers. However, I can’t say that it’s the same for Tails and Amy because they’re not as well-written as they were in the Adventure games and they hardly had any huge involvement in the plot. Don’t let the words “World Adventure” fool you.
Ironic considering how at the time, the 2010s was being heralded as this supposed "redemption era" where the series was "finally getting back on course and going back to how it's supposed to be" after the "awful dark age of the 2000s that wasn't the TRUE Sonic at all" ...apparently. Well that certainly didn't age well...and also sometimes just didn't make sense period. Like, yeah some games in the 2000s were objectively quite bad, 06's reputation was deserved regardless of any heart and ambition it may have had, but so many of the criticisms were just so disingenuous and don't make sense. Like how Black Knight was immediately derided and criticized not for the game itself, but for the mere fact that "Sonic has a sword." Like "Sonic has a sword" WAS the criticism, which...how is that criticism? Why is Sonic having a sword bad? Why are you immediately labeling that concept as bad and just acting like it's self-evident _why_ that's bad and like everyone else also automatically knows and agrees it's bad? What actually makes it bad, what's the actual substance behind your criticism? Because I don't see it, at worst that's just the concept and premise of this particular game to make it unique, and at best it sounds cool as heck which is what Sonic's supposed to be.
And most of the noteworthy detractors like Arin Hanson are either exposed as disingenuous individuals, jokes/lolcows or ill-relevant nowadays in the post-Frontiers landscape.
@SonicTheHedgehogX15 According to you that is. Whatever Sonic is supposed to be varies on who you ask including the people working on him. It just so happens the Pontaff and Graff Duo are just a bad fit for the series as whole including me who thinks their writing style to Sonic is anything but cool which is the point of the character. What separates him from Mario beyond the surface details. The only time their style really worked was on the Sonic Boom tv series and only that series because it’s a separate universe from the main series.
Mario suffered in a similar way back in the 2010s as well. It’s all because of Shigeru Miyamoto’s simplistic philosophy of not having storylines in Super Mario games. The New Super Mario Bros. games felt like carbon copies and the Paper Mario games had stupid restrictions on creativity
@@3dsfan2002idk for awhile it seemed like 3D world was all there were doing at the time and we wanted something new. Then Odyssey came out and I thought it was alright but I feel Mario has ran its course for me.
3:12 I remember the stupid friends era, ppl used to say that Shadow was some cringe edgelord, say that Amy was some obsessive stalker, act like Tails was terrible just cuz he was the first friend and demanded it go back to being Sonic vs Eggman only Then demand that Sonic has to go back to being 2d but then ignored the Advance and Rush trilogies (yes I’m counting Colours DS as Rush 3) New fans don’t know how bad those Genesis boomers used to be, I don’t even think they actually liked Classic Sonic for what it actually was anyway since Sonic had some kind of a story as early as Sonic 2 and SA1 pretty much just expanded on what was established in the classics Also Lost World was funny for the wrong reasons, I have a straight face at the jokes but for the serious scenes I die of laughter
I think ppl just hated Sonic at that time, I mean, whatever Sonic did was ridiculous just bc it was Sonic and complaining about whatever he did was the cool thing to do
@ In every game from SA2-Generations, Amy's only real purpose was to chase Sonic around. And whatever character development Shadow had in SA2 was basically gone by 2005.
4:49 you know i know the re-write has it's issues but atleast it toned down the cringe alot like remember sonic said ((hey..not cool!)) when his friends got captured by the time eater? The re-write changed that odd and cringe dialogue to ((hey! those are my friends!)) arguably a much better line i would say..
@lemon5000-tj6nvI thought he was talking about All Stars Racing TRANSFORMED cause that’s another good game that came out in the meta era that was actually good along with Gens, Mania and the boom tv show
2010s...sonic boom games, sonic 4 games, sonic forces, sonic dash games and the end of the sonic archie comics.......okay yeah i guess it went through hell
No it ain't. Was it a "Good Era" for Sonic? No. Lost World and all three Boom Games sold miserably which eventually led to Forces being what it is, and the writing is simplified, But I can at least say it started off fine with Colors (I don't count Free Riders since that was the tail end of the Dark Age). This was the damaged Sonic 06 caused. I hope people can accept that.
13:10 I grew up questioning myself why everything related to Sonic seemed cheap and lifeless when it was so amazing before. I'm so glad time made justice to the blue blur :')
The lesson here is that the loudest voices are not always the most accurate. In actuality they can even be the most toxic. Glad that SEGA finally understands that to at least some extent now.
Too bad we’re now seeing the rise of the “Japanese Sonic” fandom snobbery that I have noticed in the last few years since 2020 where now they’ll use JP Sonic as a retort in any debates and arguments more than anything including the current NewFans discussions.
I remember watching a let’s play of lost world and the commentators said that line sounded something that deem Bristow would say and yeah if he was alive today someone would’ve definitely cameoed him to say that line in his Eggman voice
Before Forces was released Infinite's song was leaked or something like that and the lyrics raised too much the expectations. Plus seeing Infinite beat Sonic (In one of the trailers I think) made you think "Oh, someone can actually beat Sonic that easily" But it was disapointing And I can forgive Colors or Lost World. But Forces needs a rewrite
Sonic’s 2010’s: Gaming’s answer to WWF New Gen Era. For every HBK vs Razor Ramon Ladder Match at WM X and Bret vs Mr. Perfect II at KotR 1993, there was also Diesel vs King Mabel at Summerslam 1995 to outweigh the positives.
I gotta say that the first 2 are wrong (in my opinion ofc). Sonic colors was NOT BAD. It was good, i played the game with fun its "colorful". Generations is really good tho. Other than that ur %100 right.
Colors was not a bad game, but it is way to forgettable for me. I owned the game when it originally came out on the Wii and even bought the remaster rerelease that came out a few years back, and I still struggle to remember what happened in that game. The only level I really remember was Planet Whisp, although I think that is due to it being featured in Generations. Soundtrack on the other hand, is absolutely amazing!
We're in the renaissance era for Sonic and Mario (Nintendo). Both of them are killing it in the box office, have great games and world-wide recognition that harken back to the 90s. Mario always sold well, but the Wii U was Nintendo's lowest point. The late great Iwata cut his salary in half because of its failure. Seeing the Wii U era along side Sonic's Meta era in real time was soul crushing. But seeing them rise again with the Switch, the movies, and games like Sonic Mania, Frontiers, Shadow Generations, Mario Odyssey and Mario Wonder, it is safe to say the two faces of gaming are back on top.
I wish I was still in the Wii U era, the switch era has been going on what feel like forever!!! And it’s so boring, I missed when both 3ds/wii u had themes, miiverse, free online modes, and Nintendo selects, switch era is Nintendo at their greediest. No controller price drop, paid online service with terrible servers, and hardware on par with Wii U that is severely outdated
@@3dsfan2002 Nah, the Wii U was a financial failure and needed to go. I'm not saying good times weren't had, but Nintendo was not doing well. Massive game droughts, poor sales, and so forth. The Switch needed to go on for a while to make up for lost time and money. I do agree that Miiverse was good, and the online experience didn't change much. In fact, a lot of the Switch's catalog are Wii U games expanded. But the numbers do not lie. Nintendo could not just keep the Wii U running, much like the Gamecube, which was my first console and I loved. But it failed, and they needed a hit like the Wii or else they'd lose way more money.
Why is Colors and Generations even here? Colors is literally a fan-favorite and the most memorable Wii-exclusive (For home consoles at the time. Am well aware of the DS port) Sonic game and Generations is considered to be the best PS3 and Xbox 360 Sonic game. There's a reason why Sega chose to remaster them with Colors Ultimate and Sonic X Shadow Generations respectively.
I know you’re joking, and it is funny, but to clarify for non Mario fans, Bowser is a parody of a stupid brute, Zavok just… is one in the most uninteresting way possible.
I think they took such a big turn at the time because Sonic 06 was probably overly serious, including the designs so fans were complaining about it becoming ridiculous, also with the guns for Shadow in Shadow the Hedgehog. So they listened to the fans who were asking for simpler Sonic stories but they listened too much and took it too far. Because of the Sonic 06 trauma they continued doing boring stories to not get too serious but it wasn't serious enough anymore like Lost World. Only when Frontiers came out they started to take the story and the writing seriously again.
I’m a 2012 kid, I grew up all around video games because I was the only girl of 3 boys who the oldest one was born in 1998 I grew up with the ps3 ps4 and wii and one of the most games I played was sonic games, my first one was sonic unleashed and I loved it then I played sonic dash Sonic riders zero gravity (I’m the biggest riders fan) sa2 and 1 Sonic 06 colors generations and Sonic riders, I stopped playing Sonic for a few years until 2019 were I played forces, I despise it its shit I hate it with my entire life the entire reason I’ve never drawn on the disc is because somehow my brother enjoyed it. It’s so fucking short like it had potential and I was excited to get it. I’ve never been so disappointed in my life I’m so happy it’s back to being good with frontiers and shadow generations, I wish I was a kid in the 2000s Sonic era🥲
Tbh, I don’t think the meta was all that terrible as people perceived it as. Yea, we got boom and forces (while forces isn’t the worst thing ever, 06 still holds that for me), but we also got sonic colors, a game that Sonic needed at the time because the Sonic games that we loved as kids weren’t hold receptively well by gaming critics and older audiences. Not to mention, we had Sonic generations, which I heard so many people loved, Sonic lost world, which was mid, but I still respect it for being ambitious, the boom tv show, which was funny, and Sonic mania, which is by far the best 2D Sonic game and give people much needed hope for the series. In general, I just don’t think that meta era was at all terrible, i don’t think we need dark story telling or Shonen like content 24/7 out of sonic, yeah it’s cool, but if we have that all the time, it will become stale, and can really backfire. And tbf, even though the jokes don’t always work, Sonic still felt like Sonic, just with different lines. I just think that there should be a middle ground when discussing the meta era, cause there’s still good that came from it, and I feel like the good outweighs the bad, rather than just focus on the bad stuff, because even though it’s a different view on a gaming icon that we all love, it’s still Sonic the hedgehog at the end of the day.
People who think the 2010’s was the worst time for Sonic are delusional as shit, because while we did get Sonic Boom which died off in a few years, and Lost World and Forces (being some of the most divisive Sonic Games to date), people tend to forget that Shadow ‘05 and Sonic ‘06 still DESTROYED this franchise as video games (which eventually led to the 2010’s). We’re just only now FINALLY (and hopefully) recovering with the likes of Frontiers, Shadow Gens, and the 3 Films. We still got Colors, Generations, All Stars Racing Transformed, and the Boom TV Show (which is better than Prime, tbh). Even if they didn’t sell well, the 3DS Boom games were decent to. People often think this is the worst era because of the writing… no… Shadow and 06 are still worse (06 especially is the worst thing to exist from a writing perspective).
No, it really started when they hired Pontac and Graff to write for the games. It did start to decline with the mid-2000s era with Sonic 06, where some characters began to get flanderized (which also did show a bit in the last few titles of the Dreamcast Era,) but the 2010s is when it hit rock bottom.
@TheTrollingPokémon247 I’ve seen people gradually making Sonic become a joke during the late 2000’s, and it got worse in the 2010’s. So you can thank Sonic 06 for being the domino effect for the franchise.
@@thecaledoniansleeper2648 I would say Shadow the Hedgehog started that domino effect much earlier and now days, the “Sonic is a joke/Sonic’s Stupid Friends” people have now become the “Japanese Sonic is All Elite & All Other Sonics Suck” snobs.
Good video ! But honestly, if you didn't put that title with Sonic Colors and Sonic Lost World and if I was just a stupid hater, I could have disliked the video from the beginning, only check the Sonic Lost World part and just being salty. The 2010's era wasn't the best of course, but saying that is the worst is kinda clickbait (I mean Sonic 06 exist, that shit traumatized me as a kid, Shadow The Hedgehog is technically not that good (but I love that game still), Generations, Colours (DS) are amazing and at least Sonic Boom gave us a really good TV show). But we all agree that Sonic Forces is the biggest darkshit disappointement of all time
So far we’re 5 years in the decade and Sonic has seriously been back on track lately. Origins and Superstars were missteps but Frontiers definitely showed so much potential for the new formula and Shadow Generations utilizes that potential into something bigger. Not to mention the movies helping break the video game movie curse. I feel the future of Sonic is looking brighter than where we were at in the meta era at this time
A show that got old and tiresome quickly after a while once the shock value wears off. There’s only so many times you can do the Itchy and Scratchy type humour before it becomes all the same.
I kind hate how Sonic pretty much went down after 2008 and I didn’t understand why people still hating on sonic to the point Where I think it got so out of hand from being a meme on TH-cam that wasn’t taken as a joke it was kinda taken seriously to the point if unnecessary bullying of people and pretty much changed Sonic as a whole
Meanwhile, a little before 2010 Ian Flynn entered the scene and became a main writer for Archie Sonic Comic and it was a whole lot better than what came before, it was a renaissance. Of course, the 2010s came with two disappointments as a certain bitter former writer of Archie Sonic filed a lawsuit against Archie Comics which led to a sudden reboot which means all the plot lines, characters, and world went to waste and the reboot is weaker than Ian Flynn's Pre-Reboot Era. 2017 may be the worst year for Sonic fans. Not only have we got Sonic Forces, but Archie Sonic was eventually canceled and replaced with IDW Sonic. Rest in peace Sally and Freedom Fighters. While Ian Flynn was writing it, he kind of got worse at it, and IDW Sonic is even more restrictive than Archie Sonic Reboot Era. As for Sonic games, eliminating Japanese writers and replacing them with random American writers may be the worst and dumbest decision SEGA or Sonic Team has ever made. I stand by that.
You know with the potential of a Sonic 06 remake and if Sega does want to heal some old wounds for the Sonic franchise. Why not remake some of these games. I think it would be cool for these games to be remade with proper gameplay and storytelling
We have got to remember that sonic is a kids franchise, we are lucky enough to have gotten stories such as the adventure games and frontiers. But we still should remember that sonic is aimed at children and most children don’t care about amazing stories and good characterisation. But don’t get me wrong though I do love it when sonic games have great story’s.
Okay. I get your point. But classic Sonic era was actually focused on teens (Watch the commercials) Plus as a kid I always liked more shows with a plot ATLA style like Winx Club or TMNT 2012. The cartoons that didnt had a plot used to disgust me xD
Yea I second that. It's not that I didn't like short snippets with comedy, or simpler stories generally; but overall, but much preferred having a show or game with an indepth story and lore that I can keep going back to years later. Teen Titans, Avatar: the Last Airbender. Sailor Moon and Dragonball Z. Sonic X. Kim Possible. Danny Phantom. TMNT 03/11. Winx. Thundercats 2011. Etc. I'm too much of a Squidward, even as a child, to ever want to watch SpongeBob.
Generations, and Mania were the only true standout mainline sonic games of that decade. Colors was fun. Lost world was meh. Forces was just plain bad. Boom had a funny cartoon with one broken mess of a game on wii u, and two meh games on 3ds.
@@straightface990 Well, yeah, but it depends how you see it, either the 2000’s from 2003-2007 (Unleashed and Black Knight are good, Werehog was GOATED, you have a skill issue if you say it’s takes too long) or the 2010’s with Colors (Colors is Mid), Lost World and Forces, but yeah, the 2000’s were bad especially Sonic ‘06 (Which was my first Sonic game)
Forces was borderline false advertisement! Like, come on... You're gonna bring back a fan favourite villain from the Adventure Era, and you're not even gonna let me fight him?! You're just gonna have him be defeated by Classic Sonic in a Deus Ex Machina way?! Same goes for Shadow! And Infinite's final fight is the same as Metal Sonic's! Zavok is the ONLY one in this game that has a unique and somewhat decent boss fight that isn't just... Running forward and jumping to hit the thing running away from you! This game LOVES telling but not showing! You can't possibly expect me to be immersed in the story when Eggman has allegedly taken over 99% of the world... And yet you won't let me SEE it! That being said, the areas you visit are just... Normal Sonic stages! They feel as if Eggman has NEVER been there! We're talking about the same dude who INFESTED an entire Pyramid Base with his MUG on EVERYTHING! Get the hell out of here...
It’s incredible how you have a game that should shake up the series’ status quo like SA2 did yet the scale and stakes behind is as pitifully safe as Star Wars Rebels. How do you make a game where Eggman won and make it feel like it has the same stakes as Sonic going to the dentist? It’s pretty telling that since 2019, Sega has not featured Zavok in any game including Shadow Generations as a boss character or in a cameo. They tried to make Zavok the new recurring villain but every time they wheeled him out, he either gets the same reaction as Jeff Jarrett as a main eventer or worse, he gets X-Pac Go Away Heat from the audience. As badly as Episode Shadow had sandbagged Infinite, people were disappointed that he wasn’t in TSR but Zavok was.
@rayvenkman2087 Zavok, just like everything in the 2010's, had SO much potential behind him. I truly believe it... But conceptually, he's such a cookie cutter villain that you might as well replace him with Bowser! Everyone has made that argument but damn it, it can't be said enough. It TRULY SAYS something when your most stereotypical villain's boss fight is BETTER than your MAIN villain's one, in the game they DEBUTED in! Forces really feels like a Sonic fanfic turned into a game!
@@Skoufidios A bad Sonic fanfic. Infinite has potential because there’s enough going for him. Zavok really is just a worse Bowser with none of the charm, we’d had better enemy mine antagonists in the franchise including Dark Oak from Sonjc X and looks as menacing as Star Trek TNG’s Ferengis were when they were supposed to be the new villain species but looks so goofy looking and blah that the threat falls flat. Just like the Ferengis, we would get the Hard Boiled Heavies who are more over with fans than either him or the Zeti except for the green one but for perverted reasons. If they pitched Zavok as this Vader (The pro wrestler) type foe with a cunning mind and can tank Sonic’s usual attacks like Knuckles back in the Classic Era while leading a group of villains inspired by famous pro wrestlers, they’d probably have more fans than they do now as Koopa Kids wannabes.
Bring Jason Griffith back as the voice of Sonic. Roger Craig Smith's interpretation is HORRENDOUS and has shown zero improvement for 15 years. He's better off voicing Omega and Commander Abe. Sonic on the other hand.....his performance is very hard to listen to no matter the story direction. Jason Griffth is still by far the best in terms of delivery, voice direction, and by far the characterization that he had for Sonic when he voiced him. He truly deserves that role. Ryan Drummond can be brought back ONLY for Adventure Sonic though.
Nah Jason really only started to hit his stride as Sonic in the later half of the 2000's from Secret Rings-Black Knight, he sounds too cartoony as Sonic and honestly, he's a better Shadow than he was a Sonic. Ryan was the only one that was good from the start and hearing some his stuff in recent years, dude's still got it and can easily play a more modern and matured Sonic given the right direction.
@@bwareist The problem with your logic here is.....due to Jason Griffith's improvement during the later of his career, he is more than qualified to voice Sonic NOW. Furthermore, I disagree with when he got good. He started to get really good during 06 and onwards. Sonic X was a very rocky start yet he has shown to greatly improve afterwards. I do agree that Ryan should be brought back but ONLY for Adventure stuff. That's it. Bring Jason back for Modern Sonic.
I disagree that Roger’s had zero improvement with Sonic’s voice. Sure it took him a while but Frontiers was the turning point when they started making Sonic more serious again. Roger’s Sonic voice sounds better with a deeper more serious tone and I’m all here for that. Granted I would love for Jason Griffith to come back as much as the other guy. But, I can’t see that happening at least any time soon
I feel like a lot of people hate Sonic Forces, not because it was that bad, but rather because of the wild expectations that people had. In my opinion, Sonic Colors is so much worse. It’s just boring 2D platforming that makes you wait for platforms. And it was the first step in the “meta era”. Meanwhile Forces is not really worse in the story department, the custom character was actually kinda cool and the gameplay doesn’t keep you waiting for things to move. And most importantly, it was the first step out of that horrid Sonic Boom stuff and towards Sonic Frontiers.
Forces deserves the hate, but it was also extra hated just for the fact that it was a thing at the same time Mania was, which people looked at Mania as a return to form for the franchise while Forces represented everything that had gone wrong with it.
@@Hynotama Nah, Forces did deserve the hate. As I said, it represented everything wrong with the series at the time. They tried to appeal to everyone in the fanbase, but appeased no one because everything about the game was half baked. The game was so disastrous that Sega had to go back to the drawing board and take their time making Sonic Frontiers, which was in of itself also a game that was half baked.
@Finfection trying to please fans is not a bad thing. I’d rather play a game that tries to please divided fans, rather than some concord shit that tries to please the Twitter modern audience. And yes, sure, it was rushed, but that’s been happening since 2006, I don’t know why people keep expecting some polished masterpiece? “Fans” have been more brutal to the series than IGN, yet they feel entitled to some masterpiece with limitless resources. And I’m not just talking about the bad games, we have TH-camrs literally bashing Sonic Adventure 2, saying it’s only 1/3 enjoyable. Say what you will about Sonic Forces, but at least I had the motivation to play it all, whereas Sonic Colors bored me so badly, I didn’t even reach the credits. And Sonic Forces was not only the first step out of that horrific Sonic Boom phase, but also demonstrated that Sonic Team was willing to tackle serious subjects, even if they did it badly in Forces. Yeah, it’s no masterpiece, but it was the first step in the right direction.
@@Hynotama You don't understand at all. You can't please everybody, especially in a fan base as divided as the Sonic fan base. Forces was a step backwards trying to rehash what worked in Generations except Forces did it worse. Sonic Adventure 2 hasn't aged well, it's understandable why some people wouldn't find it as enjoyable nowadays. You keep bringing up Sonic Boom, but Sonic Boom was never a mainline game. It was a spin off that was made to fulfill a deal Sega had made to create exclusive Sonic games for Nintendo consoles. It has no bearing on what was going on with the mainline games.
6:09 I mean the only thing good that came from this is the music and Sonic x shadow generations (which would not have happened without the og) THE MUSIC IS SICK also Sonic boom is a classic show I mean he was savage in that show
Such a blah era for Sonic. I'm not a fan of many of the voices that came with this era either. None of the voice actors are bad per say, but with the exception of Eggman (obviously), Tails, Knuckles (back when it was Travis), and maybe Blaze (either voice works), I feel that a lot of these voices just don't work for the characters. Kirk as Shadow is a good example. He just sounds too grim and overly edgy compared to his previous voices, almost more like a villain rather than an anti-hero. Kirk's voice works perfectly for a character like Kisame from Naruto, but for Shadow? To me, not really. It seems like every era of voice actors had their share of fans, from Adventure Era to Dark Era, but when it comes to this Colors Era, outside of people who enjoyed the Boom cartoon, I don't see anybody who's fully satisfied with the voices the characters have.
Might be a BIG hottake, but I think Sonic Lost World is by far, clearly overhated. For the story and dialogue, not everyone can like, I was also kinda young when game came out so it might influence me a bit, but I looked back at the game recently so the only reason that make me think that the game is hated is 'cause of the English dub who wasn't good compared to the French one, that I got first because I'm French (of course), so I won't argue about that. BUT, the gameplay is not bad at all. I mean, it's not generations, but it's not uncontrollable, it's not boring (maybe a few times), the game has better uses of wisps and it's feel so new, so unique. It's kinda like a Mario Galaxy, but just in a Sonic style (and not as good as the Mario Galaxy games, I admit it). I might regret this but I'm gonna say it, I prefer play Lost World than Heroes 🤷. Also, Roger is great
Colors (Original) was trapped on the Wii and DS for anyone who didn’t have either while Generations in comparison was on more systems and more attention was on that game because of the anniversary. Both were released early in the 2010’s. If we exclude Mania from the equation since they didn’t make it, you had Lost World in the mid-2010’s and Sonic Forces in the late 2010’s as the big Sonic Team games to define the decade and we judge a run by how well it starts and ends; it’s a pitiful fall off compared to their 2000’s outings. It doesn’t help that of all the new characters introduced in the decade, only Sticks had any real staying power beyond her initial debut, Zavok is basically the Jeff Jarrett of Sonic characters in how they had him come back twice to a muted indifferent response and the IDW characters are still largely comic exclusive. Even Infinite has fallen off in relevance after Forces given it’s been years since we last saw of him and likely will not be seen again for a long time because of what game he’s attached to. Meanwhile, the 2000’s gave us Shadow, Rouge, Blaze and other series mainstays that we still see today. We haven’t seen Zavok in any new game since 2019 and Sticks hasn’t been in anything since the late 2010’s outside of a token reference in Frontiers’ ENG script.
At least Sonic Riders is a great spin-off and a decent final hoo-rah for Sonic on GameCube and Original Xbox. Of course Sonic still get games like Unleashed and Riders: Zero Gravity on PS2 because that console was still raking in cash even after the PS3 came out.
Personally I think if you’re gonna talk about Sonic Boom it’s only right to talk about Sonic Mania. A great game btw, I’d personally call it the best Sonic game. I’d still say with Colors, Generations and Mania I overall think the best of the 2010s beat the best of the 2000s.
About the voice acting. Frontiers has been the ONLY game that I've been able to tolerate Rogers voice. No matter what he says, it's the delivery and overall sound in his voice that makes my face turn red out of the sheer amount of second-hand embarrasment, even when nobody is around. I can't imagine anyone over 7 years old being comfortable with his overly cringy voice and delivery.
The problem is that Roger Craig Smith is trying his best to sound like a teenager, but his natural speaking voice is just way too deep. The reason he sounds tolerable in Frontiers is because he is pretty much talking in his normal voice for most of it. SEGA please! Hire a new voice actor. You almost did it for Frontiers, just go through with it! Max Mittelman has great potential as a Sonic voice.
Sonic Generations really is a fantastic game, and, I do like Sonic Lost World to a certain extent, but not enough to hold how the other three games are terrible, specially Boom and Colors
Jason Griffith wasn’t a good Sonic either, I would argue he’s worse than Roger. Both Roger and Jason were jarring to hear as Sonic for years and were a massive step down from Ryan Drummond which is the better Sonic voice actor. All the others were just so unfitting, Jason doesn’t make Sonic sound cool like Ryan did, he just makes Sonic sound too goofy or what I like to call to quote Cooper “Barney Sonic.” But yeah even though the voice acting hasn’t improved I agree the meta era was the worst era of Sonic.
Each Sonic voice actor has a piece of the character but not the whole. Ryan Drummond has the young teenage enthusiasm, Jason Griffith has the more shonen hero sounding voice, and Roger Smith mastered Sonic’s back talking. If they can find a new actor that can encompass these three traits, I think they could potentially be the best voice Sonic will ever get.
@ Strong disagreement here. I only agree about Ryan Drummond’s performance. I’ve herd all the voice acting performances and there’s a reason why Ryan is the best Sonic while the others don’t do a good job and don’t sound right as Sonic. It’s like you said Sonic is supposed to sound like a young teenager full of enthusiasm and to add he’s supposed to have attitude too. Like I said before Roger and Jason are too cringe sounding and don’t fit the character. I don’t hear Shonen hero from Jason, I just hear cringe and sounds like Barney the dinosaur trying way too hard to do a Sonic impression and trying to sound cool and it’s not working, it’s very jarring and too unfitting. And no I really don’t know what you mean about Roger mastering Sonic’s “back talking.” Have you herd his dialogue from Pontac and Graff’s writing? I’m not seeing it. Right now Ryan is still the best Sonic and I don’t think anyone else can do his voice right especially when there seems to be incompetence in casting good voice actors that should sound like the characters they are speaking for and just don’t seem to care. Why they didn’t bring back Ryan Drummond is questionable at best and whoever thought bringing back the same voice actors was a good idea needs to be fired. The voice actors are good (Except for Mike Pollock) but they really don’t fit the characters, this shows that sometimes you can’t just cast anyone, you wouldn’t cast Ben Schwartz to voice act as Solid Snake or Yugi/Atem because it would be unfitting, cringy and jarring.
What's your thoughts on Jaleel White as the voice of Sonic? I thought he was pretty good. In my opinion, I think all of Sonic's voice actors have done a pretty good job.
@@KJD897 Honestly, I’m not entirely sure how I feel about Jaleel White except maybe he was just ok as Sonic. At least he’s up there along with Martin Burke.
@@solidSnake4580 I see what you mean. Although I think a better comparison would be Fred Jones from Scooby Doo doing a Sonic impression. Like I said, each major Sonic voice has a piece of the puzzle, but not the whole. Ryan has the right pitch and tone of voice, but he can sound a little flat and wooden in some parts. Like he only had enough time to do a single take for each voice line, so he just decided to speed through them all in a single session. I would be excited for Drummond to come back, but I think he might be too old to play Sonic now. Listening to him in Sonic and Tails R, you can tell he has aged. The version of events I’ve heard for why Drummond was dropped was because of some contractual disputes between either SEGA or 4Kids, can’t remember which. Basically they wanted to take the cheap route and said that Drummond can come back to voice Sonic, under the condition that he dropped the union he was apart of. He obviously didn’t want to do that, so SEGA said fine, we’ll look elsewhere. Griffith is at his best when he is allowed to go into his lower more growly range. In the few instances his Sonic gets mad, he actually sounds pretty intimidating. Look at the end of Sonic of the Secret Rings again. That is what I meant with the whole Shonen hero sounding voice. That werehog death scream. Now that is a blood-curdling scream if I ever heard one. Honestly, the werehog was his best performance. He did not need to try that hard but he chose to give it 100 percent! For the back talking thing with Roger Smith, I was more referring to his portrayal in the Sonic Boom spinoff cartoon show. The show itself was not very good but I will commend the occasional funny line of dialogue and line delivery from Roger Craig Smith. And that’s how I see Roger Craig Smith Sonic. I think he works better as an alternate universe Sonic than mainline game Sonic. Yes, Griffith’s Sonic voice is corny as heck, but at least he attempted a somewhat Sonic sounding voice. Roger Craig Smith’s Sonic just sounds like one of those obnoxious mid twenties body builders you would find at your local gym. I find it ironic that the game where he was at the most tolerable was Frontiers, the one game where he pretty much spoke in his normal voice. Honestly, I just want a new Sonic voice. And maybe Amy as well. Knuckles… Well actually David Mitchell doesn’t sound too bad. Beyond that, Everyone else sounds good to me. Kirk Thornton’s Shadow did not win me over until Shadow Generations. Although I would prefer an actor that isn’t ninety-seven years old. (Then again, Shadow is technically 50+ but that is a whole other can of worms.) I’m guessing SEGA thinks that maybe with a new writer to create more character accurate dialogue, Roger Craig Smith’s Sonic voice will somehow sound….better? SEGA PLEASE! Max Mittelman is right there! Or heck, Deven Mack from Sonic Prime. Literally anyone else would be better than Roger Craig Smith. I’ll take Jaleel White back, just please, get someone else! Also, the reason they rehired the old cast for Frontiers was likely on account of them not finding a suitable enough replacement in time. Which in company terms means, it would be cheaper to stick to the current set of actors. There was also a bunch of fans upset about Smith’s departure across social medias which also may or may not have been a factor.
Forget the Mario bland era, meta era is far worse because of games like rise of lyric and forces. Rise of lyric is one of the worst rated Wii U games ever and shattered crystal is one of the worst rated 3ds games. At least with Mario in the 2010s there were still gems that were on par with pre 2010s era Mario like most of the 3ds titles, 3d world, Mario kart 8 and Mario maker. And for most misses with Mario like the Mario partys, ultra smash, and color splash aren’t the worst games to exist
It also helps there were more Mario release than Sonic’s and it didn’t start the decade off with Colors + Generations, followed by Lost World before ending it off with Forces making the save for the L when Mania was dangerously close to ending the era off on a high note.
I actually grew up with the early years of the meta era (I got into Sonic during the late 2000s with games like SA2B, Heroes, Mega and Gems Collection and Advance), I got colours on my 7th birthday and Gens on my 8th and I did get All Stars Racing when it was still recent I gotta say it was not a great time to be a Sonic fan during that era, the only 2010s games that were great imo are Colours DS, Gens, the CD remaster, Mania and the goat All Stars Transformed, with Colours Wii and All Stars Racing 1 being good games nothing too crazy The era fell off hard after Transformed After that we got Lost World which I’ve never played but even when it came out it wasn’t that well received, the Boom happened Rise of Lyric put the series in a dark period, it was biggest flop the series has ever seen causing Sega to lose billions, you genuinely had to be there just to see how bad the damage was I remember being 11 and hearing stuff like “Sonic needs to die”, “Sonic was never good”, “Sonic had rough a transition to 3d”, “Classic Sonic is fundamentally flawed” It was just bad air around the series for a few years until Mania came out where everyone collectively went “we are so back!” and then Forces came out and pretty much crushed everyone’s hope Then after that it was pretty much a game drought until frontiers with the only things keeping us going were Team Offline Racing and Sonic Colours Ultimate which is probably the worst rerelease to come from this series, yes even worse than Sonic 1 GBA as at least that game never launched with seizure glitches Also for some reason the 2010s was also when they decided to completely change the characterisations for no reason meanwhile the Japanese versions still kept the characters consistent (the JP cutscenes Lost World are ass tho, there’s no salvaging that) And this still applies to this day with Shadow Gens being the only game where the English and Japanese versions are the same
And if you add in miscellaneous Sonic media like the whole Archie lawsuit mess and the very underwhelming Tomy line that produced the infamously woeful Modern Tails with horrid proportions as well as the costs that went into Sonic Boom’s campaign as the new generation of Sonic but it went to hell when RoL releases that ultimately killed its’ studio; it’s a string of failures with the odd success after Transformed. Everything that the internet accused the 2000’s era of was happening right before their eyes and they dared to say it was a comeback from the “dark age”. Generations and Mania really were the two shining gems that are unquestionably good regardless of the usual “Um, X was always flawed” that the latter got inflicted with.
Bit of advice: Saying something’s not that bad implies it’s still bad. Saying something was part of your childhood doesn’t make it good either. That said Colors is a decent game that still has its flaws
That may be your opinion but that’s objectively worse when you consider the factors around the 2010’s era versus the 2000’s era. Even with bumps like 2006, it’s nothing compared to the failure of Sonic Boom as an attempt to rejuvenate the series, how badly TSR got beaten by the competition and how many projects were being cancelled including the Sonic Mega Drive series by Archie. It’s like Star Trek’s 1989 but it spans almost four years.
@rayvenkman2087 Sonic Boom was a spin off series. And the TSR games were well received. If you wanna go by canceled projects as criteria to judge an era by then the 90s era has that beat. Lol.
@Finfection We were due a Sonic 4 Episode III But never got it, you know full well I was referring to the 2019 kart racer, the 2020 movie was due for 2019 but we know how that went, Sonic Free Riders killed off the Rider series, Lost World failing to impress, Sonic Boom was at one point treated by Sega to be the next big thing with equal importance to the mainlines before things didn’t work because of that one Wii-U disaster which affected the main series to some degree with the way Sega had treated it up until Frontiers and last I recall, the 2000’s era didn’t put the series on support as much as the mid to late 2010’s era did with Forces doing nothing to disprove the image of the series being well past its’ glory days. No. My criteria for what makes a bad era is how much of the bad parts outweighs the good including the way the brand was being managed at the time and most of the time, it was a lot of missteps after the start with the odd success (Mania) here or there but not enough to outweigh the negatives and we can’t blame most of it on Sega either because even Sonic Team was dropping the ball more than ever to the point that there were more than enough people calling for Christian Whitehead and his people to take over the series after the way Forces turned out. Things were that dire.
I gotta say, that this era was flawed, but at least we can look back and say “at least we got past that phase” (adventure era is my favorite though)
I never got to play the adventure games. I have played Unleashed and Frontiers though. Those were great
@ agreed, definitely some of my favorites
@ultimateslinger9857 personally, id consider Unleashed to be part of the Adventure Era, as it was the last game that still maintained the old style of writing.
@@yderga8707what
@@yderga8707technically it’s not apart of the Adventure era given that it was released in 2008 well after the Next-Gen Era started (which was in late 2006 starting with Sonic 06,) plus it has the same modern stylization as the other games in that era did.
Americans had nostalgia for the old cartoon days

@SonicTheHedgehogX15 According to you that is. What Sonic is actually supposed to be is nebulous as it is complicated.
@ og japanese sonic and the 90s 2000s were his beginning
Whatever was the tone and writing of that era IS sonic
Really? I didn't knew about that until now
Not the 3ds games!!! Those games were fantasticlike 3d land, Mario kart, dark moon, dream team, and world tour are all creative experiences

Then demand that Sonic has to go back to being 2d but then ignored the Advance and Rush trilogies (yes I’m counting Colours DS as Rush 3)
New fans don’t know how bad those Genesis boomers used to be, I don’t even think they actually liked Classic Sonic for what it actually was anyway since Sonic had some kind of a story as early as Sonic 2 and SA1 pretty much just expanded on what was established in the classics
Also Lost World was funny for the wrong reasons, I have a straight face at the jokes but for the serious scenes I die of laughter
I think ppl just hated Sonic at that time, I mean, whatever Sonic did was ridiculous just bc it was Sonic and complaining about whatever he did was the cool thing to do

In every game from SA2-Generations, Amy's only real purpose was to chase Sonic around. And whatever character development Shadow had in SA2 was basically gone by 2005.

The lesson here is that the loudest voices are not always the most accurate. In actuality they can even be the most toxic. Glad that SEGA finally understands that to at least some extent now.

Ironically, the 2024 rewrite of Sonic Generations makes the dialogue even more childish
@@mrm64 3ds ended up being a success and my favorite console ever
Guys I’m a sonic fan…. Raised by the Meta era.
Colors and generations were fantastic
Sonic Colors and Generations were really good
Tbh, I don’t think the meta was all that terrible as people perceived it as.
Didn’t both Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06 started his 15-year-long cringe era?
I think so
No, it really started when they hired Pontac and Graff to write for the games.
@@thecaledoniansleeper2648 that’s true.

But we all agree that Sonic Forces is the biggest darkshit disappointement of all time
Well, I couldn't agree more. The 2010s era about Sonic was lame.

7:03 oh...their IDW versions are alot better i would say that.
I feel the future of Sonic is looking brighter than where we were at in the meta era at this time
I got interest on the franchise on that decade, but I played the Adventure era and the Genesis games on my PS2. Good times...
You know the fact that these stories were very tame is funny when you consider that the writers did Happy Tree Friends, a really dark and gory show.

Let’s not forget that Mania was the shining light of this era and Generations to an extent

@lemon5000-tj6nv I agree with the fact that kids deserve good stories too but sometimes sega doesn’t
Generations, and Mania were the only true standout mainline sonic games of that decade. Colors was fun. Lost world was meh. Forces was just plain bad. Boom had a funny cartoon with one broken mess of a game on wii u, and two meh games on 3ds.
Actually the worse era was the 2000’s, specially 2006
@@straightface990 Well, yeah, but it depends how you see it, either the 2000’s from 2003-2007 (Unleashed and Black Knight are good, Werehog was GOATED, you have a skill issue if you say it’s takes too long) or the 2010’s with Colors (Colors is Mid), Lost World and Forces, but yeah, the 2000’s were bad especially Sonic ‘06 (Which was my first Sonic game)
@X_RazorBlade_X I'm of the opinion that there is no "worst" decade for Sonic. They all have their strengths and weaknesses.

@@ZmanShow 10 Points for this lad over here! :D
@@rayvenkman2087
I'd rather have Discount Bowser and missed potential Infinite than whatever 06 and Shadow tried to do.

It was a good era for the sonic boom tv show tho
What a waste of a decade
@ Forces did not deserve all the hate. Some of it, maybe. But not all of it. It was over hated. Sonic Colours is not hated enough though.

2010s Sonic was never cool😔
2020s SONIC CAN BE COOL?!?
Sonic Generations was the best part of this era!
Also, Roger is great
I don’t think colors or generations are bad. But after that, I feel like sonic team had no idea what they were doing.
Still a better era then the lows of 06 not even functioning
At least Sonic Riders is a great spin-off and a decent final hoo-rah for Sonic on GameCube and Original Xbox. Of course Sonic still get games like Unleashed and Riders: Zero Gravity on PS2 because that console was still raking in cash even after the PS3 came out.

Sonic Colors is good
9:11 had me rolling, it was so unexpected but so good at the same time!
Well I’m guessing I’m the only one here who grew up with this era AND actually liked (and still likes) most of these games
I have a feeling they're gonna go backwards next game
The problem is that Roger Craig Smith is trying his best to sound like a teenager, but his natural speaking voice is just way too deep. The reason he sounds tolerable in Frontiers is because he is pretty much talking in his normal voice for most of it.
SEGA please! Hire a new voice actor. You almost did it for Frontiers, just go through with it! Max Mittelman has great potential as a Sonic voice.

Some fans, including myself, give the 2010's a more appropriate title called the Colors Era.
Sonic Generations really is a fantastic game, and, I do like Sonic Lost World to a certain extent, but not enough to hold how the other three games are terrible, specially Boom and Colors
0:22 what were those noises?
(Then again, Shadow is technically 50+ but that is a whole other can of worms.)
I’m guessing SEGA thinks that maybe with a new writer to create more character accurate dialogue, Roger Craig Smith’s Sonic voice will somehow sound….better?
SEGA PLEASE! Max Mittelman is right there! Or heck, Deven Mack from Sonic Prime. Literally anyone else would be better than Roger Craig Smith. I’ll take Jaleel White back, just please, get someone else!
Also, the reason they rehired the old cast for Frontiers was likely on account of them not finding a suitable enough replacement in time. Which in company terms means, it would be cheaper to stick to the current set of actors. There was also a bunch of fans upset about Smith’s departure across social medias which also may or may not have been a factor.
I HATE Sonic Colors. Even more than Forces. Colors is soooo frustrating

@@ZmanShow clever.
Mario bland era? What did I miss?
@halfhawk718 I think he refers to the period between New Super Mario Bros Wii and Super Mario Odyssey by my guessing?
I was born in 2006 so i grew up in the 2010s
I actually grew up with the early years of the meta era (I got into Sonic during the late 2000s with games like SA2B, Heroes, Mega and Gems Collection and Advance), I got colours on my 7th birthday and Gens on my 8th and I did get All Stars Racing when it was still recent
I gotta say it was not a great time to be a Sonic fan during that era, the only 2010s games that were great imo are Colours DS, Gens, the CD remaster, Mania and the goat All Stars Transformed, with Colours Wii and All Stars Racing 1 being good games nothing too crazy
The era fell off hard after Transformed
After that we got Lost World which I’ve never played but even when it came out it wasn’t that well received, the Boom happened
Rise of Lyric put the series in a dark period, it was biggest flop the series has ever seen causing Sega to lose billions, you genuinely had to be there just to see how bad the damage was
I remember being 11 and hearing stuff like “Sonic needs to die”, “Sonic was never good”, “Sonic had rough a transition to 3d”, “Classic Sonic is fundamentally flawed”
It was just bad air around the series for a few years until Mania came out where everyone collectively went “we are so back!” and then Forces came out and pretty much crushed everyone’s hope
Then after that it was pretty much a game drought until frontiers with the only things keeping us going were Team Offline Racing and Sonic Colours Ultimate which is probably the worst rerelease to come from this series, yes even worse than Sonic 1 GBA as at least that game never launched with seizure glitches
Also for some reason the 2010s was also when they decided to completely change the characterisations for no reason meanwhile the Japanese versions still kept the characters consistent (the JP cutscenes Lost World are ass tho, there’s no salvaging that)
And this still applies to this day with Shadow Gens being the only game where the English and Japanese versions are the same
And if you add in miscellaneous Sonic media like the whole Archie lawsuit mess and the very underwhelming Tomy line that produced the infamously woeful Modern Tails with horrid proportions as well as the costs that went into Sonic Boom’s campaign as the new generation of Sonic but it went to hell when RoL releases that ultimately killed its’ studio; it’s a string of failures with the odd success after Transformed. Everything that the internet accused the 2000’s era of was happening right before their eyes and they dared to say it was a comeback from the “dark age”.
Generations and Mania really were the two shining gems that are unquestionably good regardless of the usual “Um, X was always flawed” that the latter got inflicted with.
The only reason someone would like a game like sonic forces or lost world is if they were a little kid and it was their first sonic game lol.

Bit of advice: Saying something’s not that bad implies it’s still bad. Saying something was part of your childhood doesn’t make it good either. That said Colors is a decent game that still has its flaws
Maina was pretty good
What? As a person that's been a fan of Sonic as long as the franchise has existed, the 2010s era was better than the 2000s era.
Nah
