Lukas, abandoned by his dad. Nate, abused by his dad, mother suffered from addiction. Brooke, mother treated her like garbage, dad neglected her. I think Haley was only one of the original cast that didn't have a shitty upbringing, other then being poor.

Yes he had been abandoned by his dad but Keith took over as a father figure and Karen was just the best mother figure one could probably have. They have a super strong bond and because of that I don’t think Lucas really had it bad
I never expected to love Justin by the end of "Thirteen Reasons Why", since he was one of the few characters who was actually tolerable. He was on the track to being a better person, and had a sweet bromance with Clay, only to die horribly and abruptedly.

Same here. I disliked Justin in season one. But by the end of the series he grew to be one of my favorites. I was hoping he would have gotten a much happier ending than he did. I was crying a lot when I found out it was too late to save him. It felt like a slap in the face to have his character changing for the better only to pass away in the end.
Elena's breakdown scene never fails to bring me to tears. It just breaks your heart in half
I would say Issac’s backstory is sadder than Stiles in Teen wolf. I mean his mum died, then his brother and he had to grow up with a physically abusive dad, until he died to, then he was just an orphan. But don’t get me wrong both are bad.
Sad true but we only got in for 2 seasons and that's it we had Stiles for all 6 and look what happened we did not forget void Stiles and then in season 5 he killed that kid in self defense and being forgotten about for a long time I think that's a little bit more trauma there too.
You left out that Veronica Mars was also sexually assaulted.
Also, while Stiles had a rough time, there are other Teen Wolf characters who had it much worse, specifically Derek and Isaac. Also, Stiles isn't a werewolf.
1st of Derek wasn't a teenager and not human and his family was killed by hunters so unrealistic too me and issac he's storyline was sad but he was only on 2 seasons. We tend too forget Stiles even killed somebody in season 5 he is the 1st person in Scott pack too kill and he is human and mom died when he was in the room at age 8 or 9 that would mess up a kid badly and in season 6 being forgotten that's worser then death.

Veronica Mars was shunned because she was raped. Everyone made it her fault and she later learned her rapist gave her vd, which is also how she figured out who raped her.

I think Toby Cavanaugh from PLL should’ve at least gotten an honorable mention. His mental ill mother was put into an insane asylum when he was rather young, and was pushed off the building. Her murder was covered up and reported as a suicide to protect another patient. When his dad remarried, he was sexually abused by his step-sister for years, and when Allison found out about the nature of their relationship, she used it to blackmail him. Then Alison forced him to take responsibility for “The Jenna Thing” and got him sent to juvenile detention. She spread gross rumors about him while he was in there, and he returned a complete outcast. Kid went through some ✨ trauma ✨

Honestly elena’s backstory is sad but I still think bonnies is sadder both her parents where murdered her relationship with Jeremy and losing her grams being stuck in a prison world during coming back losing her magic and having to live while Elena can’t and finally Enzo dieing in-front of her she didn’t even get a happy ending she was definitely had the saddest life of the character
Also Katherine's family was murdered, her baby got taken away, she's been on the run almost her whole live...
But if you think about it "backstory" is what happened before the show's events. so YES Bonnie had it way worse but pre-show events Elena's was sadder
Um no. Bonnie has been through much, but can’t compare with Elena. She lost both her adoptive and biological parents. Found out she was adopted by Stefan telling her. Lost Bonnie, lost Jeremy, her aunt, Alaric, Tyler, Damon and Stefan. Most came back, but still. Caroline got turned into a vampire. Bonnie blamed her for her Grams dying. Katherine tormented her and when Elena finally forgave, she took over her body and tried to change her whole life. She got kidnapped several times, and also sacrificed. She died and then turned into a vampire. She got into a coma that was linked to her best friends life.
The saddest part for Bonnie in my opinion, is that she lost Enzo. That was just pure bs.

Bonnie’s backstory was sad her mom abandoned her when she was 5 and her dad was a workaholic and when her parents died in front of her. Katherine even had a sadder backstory than Elena . Jess from Gilmore girls his mom didn’t care about him and dumped him, his dad was not there for him. And when he just met him, his dad abandoned him again. Also how can u say Elena wasn’t whiny cause she was and quite annoying and literally treated her BFF’s like crap and cheated on Stefan WTF!!!

"Teen Wolf" : Isaac's backstory is sadder than Stiles's. He lost his mother when he was young. His brother died. On top of that, his father was abusive to the point where he beat Isaac and locked him in a (thankfully unplugged) freezer ... which led Isaac to develop claustrophobia. He was then left an orphan when his father was killed.
Far as I'm concerned, Sam and Dean Winchester ("Supernatural") should be on this list. Their mother made a deal with a demon, which led to her violent death and to Sam being "infected" with the demon's blood. They were then raised by a father who was so obsessed with avenging their mother's death that he neglected them and became their drill sergeant as opposed to their father. They were damaged on so many levels!
NOTE: Does the narrator realize how patronizing her tone is? Is that what she's aiming for?
But we only got isaac for 2 season's only we got Stiles all 6 season and look what happened too him in that well there's void Stiles and the time he killed that kid in season 5 and the burdon of that and being forgotten by everyone that would mess anymore up and having panic attacks did you see isaac have those attacks as a human? Just saying here.

But "Supernatural" isn't a TEEN drama. I agree about Isaac, his backstory sounds a lot sadder than Stiles'.
I wouldn't include Supernatural on this list as I wouldn't consider it a teen show

I agree. And even though Hopper adopted her, she loses him without knowing he's alive. So technically, she loses the only parental support she ever had

Here's a teen character with a sad backstory, Rick Tyler aka Hourman from Stargirl. His parents were murdered when he was 6 and was left in the custody of his uncle, but has been abused physically, emotionally, and verbally causing him to become the local delinquent with anger issues. Only when he became a superhero and found friends, was Rick able to find some happiness and smile.
Chuck bass from gossip girl? That character proved money can't buy happiness. Not having a mother, and being blamed for her death, then bart was the worst father there could ever be. No one in the family!
No Clark Kent from Smallville? Even ignoring his future as Superman, his whole planet was destroyed, and he was sent to a different one where he brought death and destruction. For that matter , Lex has a horrible backstory. He might be too old for this list.
Murphy from the 100 super sad I also love his backstory because it wasn’t the sorta cliche parents didn’t love him but they did also when they were doing the beginning I was wondering if JJ was going to be on here and he was.

I've been asking the same question, Derek history is very sad, even before he came back to Beacon. he had to kill his first love, almost all the members of his family died, and for last he came back to Beacon just to find his sister murdered by his uncle.

I’d add Daphne from Switched at Birth. Her father left, she was raised poor, and she lost her hearing.
And was switched at birth and that her adoptive mother knew yet raised her anyways instead of finding the parents.
Her story was sad but it definitely would not make the list. She still had a loving mother and grandmother growing up. She had a stable home and roof over her head. I wouldn’t consider her poor either. Her house may not have been big but she was still provided with everything she needed.
Restricting the list to shows that premiered within the last 20 years completely erases iconic and OG teen dramas. Dylan McKay from Beverly Hills 90210 should have been on here, he was the first teen drama character to have such a sad story

I see backstories as stories that happened before a show airs, so I'd definitely not add Stiles, over say Isaac or Derek.

Peyton had Brooke and she married Lucas. Her life was bright at the end.
I think she was on the list because in the beginning her life had enough trauma with both her moms dying and then getting attacked by someone she thought at first was her half brother. But yes her life was bright at the end and everything seemed to come into place for her at the end which does show that even if you do feel like you always get the rough end of the stick there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel

This List is only for the Teenage characters or the characters of teenage movies, because there is a complete Derek Hale in Teen Wolf and even if he is not a Teen, his back story during his teens is pretty sad.

Wow I didn't expect my favorite charecter to be number 1 but I did definitely want him on the list and was afraid he wouldn't be after seeing number 9. Honestly I agree completely. Except as mucn as I love Elena I feel like Hope suffered more than her and also deserves a spot on this list.
Katherine had a sadder and much devastating backstory than Elena. Only thing is Katherine didnt even have the time to mourn over her loss as she had to be constantly on run from Klaus whereas we got see Elena mourn all the time.
In one of these lists, we NEED to include Doctor Shaun Murphy from The Good Doctor; he was abused by his alcoholic dad, his mum didn't protect him and he was bullied at school a lot, all because he's autistic. He then lost his younger brother, Steve, who fell while they were playing and was in and out of foster homes until he was taken in by Doctor Glassman, who is his dad. Need I mention that Lea (who would soon become his girlfriend and eventual wife) didn't want to be with him at first and he's been subjected to a lot at the hospital, also because of his autism? (Including being somewhat hated by the people who truly are his parents because he wanted to help them but cut down their careers as surgeons.)
I feel like Jeremy and Elena should be together because they have the same backstory. Also, Katerina had the worst backstory. Love her or hate her but what happened to her ( backstory wise) was worse than all the other characters. She was a teen mom and had her daughter taken away seconds after giving birth and wasn’t even able to hold her despite how much she begged for her. She spent years afterwards searching for her daughter and couldn’t find her. She was also disowned by her father for having her baby. It’s terrible but she still loved her family. She met the Mikaelsons and was happy for a while before she found out that she was going to be ritually sacrificed so she killed her self and became a vampire and returned home. She then found out her family had been slaughtered by Klaus in revenge for her running away. She blamed her self. She may have had issues with her dad but she had a lot of siblings and she adored her mom. She then had to spend 500 years running from Klaus.

I feel like Brooke Davis deserves to be on this list because while Peyton suffered through losing parents through death, Brooke suffered from losing her parents due to neglect and abandonment which is just as bad, if not worse. And even though Victoria later redeems herself, Brooke still gets heartbroken by her father who just doesn't care about her. Nathan also deserves to be on this list for a similar reason but not because of losing a parent, but because of being the outcome of an overbearing, toxic father who later takes his uncle from him. And even further you could also add Dan Scott to this list because he's an example of a man who goes too far for selfish gains and later regrets it and finds little to no redemption until the very end which most would argue isn't even a true redemption because he can't be redeemed.
I think Peyton's is worse because at least Brooke could repair her relationship with her parents. Peyton couldn't do that. Her biological father didn't stick around for very long and her adopted dad wasn't always around. Peyton was finally able to have a relationship with her biological mom and then she dies. She even walked in on her biological mom's dead body. They had been working on the benefit album and she was getting ready to show Ellie when she saw her dead.
Justin should have been number 1!! The trauma he went though was horrible. From homelessness to sexual assault to violence to drug addiction, and then death. I’ve never seen a sadder story in my life when I watched the show I felt like I lost a brother of my own so devastating 😢
Gotta say, since you added Veronica Mars, Logan Echolls at the very least deserved a mention. He was brutally abused by his father for years and no one ever stopped it, (even those who were aware of it) right up until his dad went to jail, his mother also killed herself and left him to deal with the abuse alone, his girlfriend was murdered, by his father because she'd been cheating on him with his father. He gets accused of a crime he didn't commit and is almost beaten to death for it on the same night he's considering ending his life the same way his mother did.

I hate almost everyone in 13 reasons why because they are some of the worst human beings and I'm sure they exist real life. I gotta say though, justin had a terrible childhood with a neglectful mother, drugs, abuse, and being molested by one of her past boyfriends.

I love Buffy, but some of the thing you're mentionning aren't part of her backstory. Her backstory would be: becoming a slayer, having her first watcher dies, losing her LA friends, having her parents divorce, being expulsed from her school and having to move to Sunnydale.
Veronica, Stiles and Ryan deserve to be higher on the list than Peyton.
Logan Echolls should also be included.

Shelby from the wilds should 100% be on here. Her backstory is tragic with her parents especially her dad pressuring her to be a "good Christian girl" in their eyes.
(SPOILERS FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T SEEN THE SHOW)
Her best friend Becca was raped by her stepbrother when she was underage. After that, Becca fell into a deep depression and everyone in the town ended up hating Becca and thought she was overdramatic and too weird and dark for the small Texas town. When she confessed to Shelby, Shelby said it was not her fault at all and her stepbrother should've known better. No one had told Becca that before so it built a stronger bond between the two.
Shelby has been a picture-perfect girl her whole life, her dad is one of the most respected men in the town and she competes in pageants to win awards for her talent and beauty. She is consistently being watched by others but whenever when shes with Becca she felt free and didn't feel like she was being judged. One day when she was trying on dresses and showing them to Becca, Shelby kissed her and Becca pulled away. Becca said sorry and suggested that they should talk about it, but then her dad walked in.
Her dad is a very controlling conservative Christian man that uses everyone around him and scares many people. Turns out he ended up seeing Shelby kiss Becca and was not happy about it. He fully ignored his daughter because he thought that she was gay. Shelby got so scared she would never speak to her dad again that she started to tell him that 'she is not like that' and she is a good Christian girl. She goes onto convincing her dad and herself that Becca kissed her and she had no idea why. Her dad eventually believes her and says he doesn't want her to be alone or outcasted by their town so she has to force those feelings down even if she has them because that's gods word.
Becca ends up visiting Shelby to try and talk to her about the kiss but Shelby starts yelling and her and tries to get her to stay away from her as much as possible because she is so frightened of what her dad will think every time he sees them together. She takes it out on Becca and says mean things to her like ' that story of your brother raping you is ridiculous, I bet that never even happened and you were making it up' trying to convince Becca that she was lying straight to her face to make her happy. Becca visibly got upset because she didn't know why Shelby got so mad at her considering she kissed her. Shelby goes on to saying she never wants to see Becca again and she was only friends with her because she pitied her.
Shelby was becca's life support and only friend so that causes becca to go in a downward spiral. When shelby was getting ready for a pagent weeks later she found out before she was going onstage that becca had (TW) killed herself. Shelby then sings to a crowd while sobbing in a gut-wrenchingly emotional performance as you can see she feels so utterly guilty about it. She couldn't even tell her parents that becca had died because she was so scared they were going to think she cared for her in a romantic way (which she did).
She had this internalised hate toward herself after these events and stopped trying to get people close to her emotionally and forced herself to be with a douchebag boyfriend that cheats on her. She pushed her feelings down so much because she was afraid of getting judged by others and especially her dad. She then started to become internally homophobic and while on an island told a girl that she thought 'that way of life was a sin' she ended up so far getting a cute love story and a happy ending (but there is a season 2 so you never know). But her backstory is the most heartbreaking thing I've ever watched.
Also justice for Becca because I can not begin to imagine what becca was thinking and feeling. Becca's backstory is devastating too but I put shelby down on the list instead as Becca is only a minor character.

Her adoption and the identity of her birth parents were hidden from her. Her birth mother tragically died on the day of her birth. Her mom died when she was a teen. Her grandfather wants her dead. Her grandmother was murdered because she tried to help Nancy. Her boyfriend was murdered by her uncle. So so much has happened to her.
I had a tragic childhood and past, I went through mental health, I suffer from anxiety and depression, I have Autism and never told anybody that I have it and I don't understand some things and say things I'm not supposed to say, I had trouble controlling my emotions, I was really aggressive, got bullied and teased a lot, girls were mean to me when I was a little kid that cause me to hate myself, people, love and being afraid to give love a chance and I been single for a long time with no love experience cause I have reasons, I had trouble listening and don't listen sometimes, being ignored, mistreated, disrespected, have trust issues, became a jerk to everybody, did horrible things, have a messed up reputation, doesn't get along with society and act like nobody cares about me.
Middle School - I got bullied and teased a lot that caused me to be a bully and jerk to everybody, I once said I will shoot everyone in middle school, it did not go well, I almost got suspended, but did not, it's that moment that I realized I have autism.
High School - I also got bullied and teased a lot that caused me to be a bully and jerk to everybody, I got hospitalized for the first time and then twice in my final year in high school after I snapped and bite a student's arm and got arrested by the police in May 2018, then I said I want to commit suicide and got taken to the ambulance, away from my high school, that's the last they seen of me. It's at that moment that I realized I have a mental health disability.
I'm so relatable and sympathetic when I act out because I have Autism, was depressed or sad because everyone seems to be doing better than me and nobody seems to care. I know what it's like to have pain, I wish I had my chance with that really smoking hot, Latina girl with black hair back in my final year in high school, but I didn't cause I did something horrible in the end and she doesn't even think about me or know I have Autism, that I don't understand love, or even experience it cause I been single for a long time with no love experience. I knew relationships don't work out since I was 9 years old because I watch a bunch of Novelas based on them and I have other reasons to remain single for a long time. Nowadays I don't care anymore and gave up on love, everything, and everybody, I will worry about myself and trust nobody, have nobody, and be forever isolated and alone in the dark.
Why is Chuck Bass not on this list.

Ok what about Derek Hale from Teen Wolf? Has to kill his 1st love Paige to lessen her suffering. He is groomed and molested by a teacher who is only using him to get to his family.
