4K UHD AND 240Hz GAMING!! The ULTIMATE all round projector for 2020!?! Optoma UHD42 / UHD50X

- Optoma first announced the UHD42 (UHD50X in USA) at ISE2020 in Amsterdam and we have been waiting for it to come in ever since.... Finally a Projector that offers BOTH 4K UHD + HDR for the best picture quality in movies AND a super fast 240Hz mode (1080p) for playing the latest competitive games. That super fast refresh is also backed up with a measured 15.7ms input lag time which is pretty much up there with the best gaming monitors on the market. (Many monitors claim a pixel response time of under 8ms but the actual measured input lag is significantly higher).
We put the UHD42 through its paces, comparing it with the previous UHD300X with a look at overall performance and then a closer look at its 240Hz gaming modes. DLP tech has some serious potential when it comes to high refresh rates as it doesnt suffer from the smearing and ghosting that you can get with monitors that use LCD technology. How will the UHD42 fare then? Watch the video to find out!
At just £1299 RRP could this be the go to projector for home use in 2020?
We think so, especially if you are a gamer......100" gaming at 240Hz? Yes please!

Finally someone to show the ufo blur test. Greatwork!
yea we think we need to invest in some decent high speed cameras. really tough to capture at high speed. The recording we have came from a phone (lockdown and all that) and didnt always stay in sync properly. But to the eye it was fantastic. :)
@@ScanComputers To bad it cant do 240hz at 4k... its only 1080p. Bummer for HD gaming
@@MisterGreenGuy or even just 120hz
@@MisterGreenGuy That is beyond the HDMI 2.0 specs. maybe next year when HDMI 2.1 is more widespread
@@MisterGreenGuy Technology isn't even there for 4K at 120Hz unless you've got a £3000 PC. 120/240 is perfectly reasonable at 1080P.
Dear Optoma: Do the same projector but with short throw and I will buy it!!
What is short throw?
We are sure that one will follow soon as they usually do :)
@@jamesrobinson9513 They are reffering to ultra short throw, where the projector can be just a few centimeters away from the screen rather than a few metres. Useful for those who dont want a permanent fixed setup. However they tend to take longer to come out as getting the projection correct is very difficult
Scan Computers Thank you for clarifying that.
@@jamesrobinson9513 YOU ARE THE BO$$
This vioe review was frigin awesome, well done!
I love that the 240hz demonstration was someone using a controller xD its just a rarity when most people wanting such a high frame rate play FPS games and play Mouse and Keyboard
I still come back here once in a while to check if theres an updated version with HDMI 2.1. Hope it comes out soon!
I just bought it.
I became convinced that 2.1 won’t be implemented by game creators very much for a long time.
Few games will run at 4K 120fps any time soon.
@@Michael.Eddington it's not really the game creators though, but just Optoma that needs to implement it?
I now have a receiver with HDMI 2.1. Just need the projector now!
@@madsens90 still non available as of yet unfortunately. However we arent sure at the moment what 2.1 will bring to normal projectors anyway. The current DLP chip wont be capable of doing 4k 120Hz so it will need a completely new generation to potentially allow that. The current chip is 1080p and then shifts 4 times for each frame to achieve 4k 60Hz, so would have to switch 8 times to do 4k 120 so it would be quite an ask. We also dont know how it would work with a variable refresh rate either. Maybe we will find out more in the coming months but adding those features feels like we would see a much higher price :(
@@ScanComputers thank you so much for that detailed reply!
I've never considered the lens shift vs refresh rate problem before.
What I'm hearing is that it's more likely that we'll get cheaper native 4k projectors with a high refresh rate, than lens shift projectors "quick" enough to support higher refresh rates.
what is that blue light right side of this video??? if you show screes dont youse any light on room...
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that you can't get 240hz on this projector with Keystone correction on. So for most people, they won't be able to use the 240hz mode without a hideous trapezeoid projected image unless they set the projector up directly in line with the screen, but that means that you'll have to sit off to the side or really low down, especially as it isn't a short throw projector. I'm still waiting for a projector with short throw 240hz with keystoning! Is there such projector yet?
this is correct.in enhanced gaming mode many picture options get switched off and that includes keystone correction. There are no ultra short throw 240Hz projectors as of yet.
The specs page says:
Vertical scan rate
: 24 ~ 120Hz
2D compatibility: 1080p(50/60Hz), 2160p(50/60Hz)
Connections: HDMI 2.0, 1.4
Problems:
HDMI 2.0 cannot do uncompressed 4k at 120hz.
And there's no mention of 240hz at all anywhere.
Did anyone actually test the device? Can it actually deliver 240hz in any resolution? Can it do 4k 240 hz as advertized? Actual 240 individual frames? What connection was used?
Can it do at least 120hz for a 4k image? Under what conditions, what connector was used? What compression mode? HDMI 2.0 can deliver 4k @ 120hz only under 4:2:0 compression, which doesn't have the best image quality (small text is unreadable).
I was hoping they'd use HDMI 2.1 in 2020. It seems they want numbers to match - HDMI 2.1 in 21st year...
This projector supports 1080p 240Hz, and 4k 60Hz. These are the maximum available right now through the HDMI 2.0 (as you rightly say without compression). Also there are no GPU's available at the moment that support the HDMI 2.1 standard either so currently there is no way to go higher. We did state this in the video though. We think the spec sheet has an incorrect listing and have told Optoma to have a look at it.
@@ScanComputers Releasing September 15th 2020 the RTX series 3000 cards will have hdmi 2.1.
Scan Computers So you use an hdmi 2.0 to play 1080p 240hz?
@@jacobbohlinlea5756 thats correct yes
For gaming responce time is very important. And this has 15.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong since I'm not completely familiar with the similarities of monitors and projectors but if your pixels cant change quick enough it does not matter if your tech is capable of high refresh rates. In order to send a clear 240hz signal you would need response times of under 5ms. I don't see how this projector can possibly display a clear signal. 240hz monitors have response times 3x faster than this and even then only the fastest of them look good enough to play on.
There is confusion around this.. pixel response time is what is often what is shown on the box of monitors and is how fast the pixels themselves can react. In some cases its possible to 'overdrive' them to get them to react faster but there is then a cost. In most cases monitors stating a 1ms pixel response can only do it in this overdrive mode which introduces ghosting and blurring. DLP chips can switch extrememly fast so this isn't a problem for them. Then, on top of this you have input lag. This is the 15.7ms stated for this projector. This has nothing to do with pixel speed its just how long it takes to get the picture from the cable to the screen. All devices have some sort of input lag. For monitors this isn't generally stated but the very best ones can hit about 4ms while most high end models are between 8-15ms. This doesn't affect picture quality at all as its a delay. Maybe we could have made this clearer in the video though :)
@@ScanComputers OK so 15ms of input lag makes more sense, that's a bit less than the input lag of a high-end TV running at 120hz. So that's a pretty terrible value for a 240hz device. But now I'm wondering what the actual pixel response time is. I'm willing to bet it isn't great either.
@@jayh0086 DLP chips dont have 'Pixels' in the same way that LCD does. The actual chip itself is over 1000 times faster so would be more like 0.001ms. However that isnt the full story, as it isnt with LCD either. What we can see (and its in the video) is that on the UFO test the projector does extremely well with no issues of ghosting or blurring. Overall we think its a great option for gaming aside from the very top esports pros, and it isnt aimed at those people anyway as they wouldnt use a projector.
Good night friend, what is the difference between the uhd50x optoma and the uhd506?
Hi, Could you please provide the link for the UHD506, so we can check this with optoma for you. -GH
From what I know is, that the UHD 42 is not a native 4k projector. I uses dlp e-shift technology to reach 8 mil pixel, to be allowed to name it 4k. I wonder if I use this projector with pc, can i even choose a 3840 x 2160 resolution? I think it is possible to choose, but it propably wont show all the nicely rendered 4k details send by my computer... Can anyone confirm this or give informations around the topic?? Thanks in advance :)
I'll answer my own question and hope someone may find it useful. The Optoma UHD 42 uses a chip produced by Texas Instruments. Look up how eshifting works.. End of the story use the 2 gen chip by T.I. and get close to native 4k.
Hello, the UHD380x projector is more for cinema experience ? I still want to play a bit. The imput was from the 380X ?? or maybe the UHD42
Is it a upgrade from a 1080p projector? Ive never used a projector with HDR or 4k. I currently have optoma 143x.
Yes 4K and HDR content will look significantly better vs your 143X. You may need to upgrade your cables and connections to be able to use 4K though. And its worth noting that 1080p content will benefit from this projectors better contrast ratio but picture quality should be the same.
Hello! Great job on the review. To clarify the UHD42 is the UK equivalent to the US UHD50X correct? Same projector but different names by region. Thanks!
looks like it according to some other source, I had the same question and considering getting it too.
Hello. Do you like the optoma uhd30 projector. are you the owner? What are your impressions of this projector? is it worth buying it?
The UHD 30 is basically the same projector but without the vertical lens shift and a significantly smaller zoom adjustment. If the 30 fits your setup, or you are setting up a brand new space and dont need the ability to adjust the picture then go with the UHD30 and save some money. However for most people its worth paying the bit extra for the UHD42 as it can save a lot of hassle, especially if you already have a setup and need it to fit within that space.
@@ScanComputers thank you very much
Great video! Gonna get this for the PS5 as I’m over 3m away on my couch and a tv that size is unaffordable :)
I'm not sure if 16Ms response time is good enough for fast paced shooters ECT. MOST Same priced tvs have 7Ms.
Great video!

@@Gunner11763 ahhaahhahaha
the 51 is a completely different proposition really. Its not related at all.
This video has only been out a few hours and the projector is already down to just over a grand. Massive bargain!!
Its currently on a limited time offer, but we can't say that in the video as prices go up and down :)
where?
The UHD30 is EXACTLY the same as the UHD50 (42), minus the lens shift - but for alot cheaper - picked one up from Richer Sounds for £899
@@AlexPlayerDigital ahh, thanks. I'm in the US :/
Yes the UHD30 is the same minus the lens shift and 1.3x zoom meaning it requires a longer throw to achieve the same picture size and has less adjustability, but if you have the ability to set it up correctly then its a good option and performs exactly the same for everything else. sound like you picked it up on the latest offer. The UHD42 is generally about £200 more than the UHD30 which stacks up with the offer we had on the UHD42 recently.
does the optoma uhd42 really got the 4k ? and not the upscaled 4k ? other beamers with real 4k costs about 3000-4000 €
It's with e-shift , the chip inside is a 1080p one.
Is it at least 120hz 1440p?
We have requested that Optoma look into this in a firmware update as it should be technically be possible.
What is the equivalent model in USA?
Hi Scan, great video. Can you tell me how the UHD42 deals with PAL content? Is there any judder issue when streaming HDTV? Bit worried as watching 50hz through a 60hz machine is an issue.
Hi John, it supports 24Hz, 30Hz, 50Hz and 60Hz for TV modes so will match the output of the device. you should be totally fine.
@@ScanComputers Brilliant. Thank you.
I don't game but I heard it does great 3D. Is it good just for movies?

We dont quite understand what you are asking here? The HD38 is 3D compatible so should switch over to the 3D mode when you play the video. Your PC might need a video program that supports 3D playback and you might also have to switch the PC into the 3D playback mode within that software. We arent sure on the PS4
@@ScanComputers Hello and thank you for your answer. My computer is not 3d but it is not compulsory we can watch a 3d video that the video projector is responsible for broadcasting. My problem is that my projector does not go into 3D if I do not put blu ray 3d while my still optoma could play side by side or top buttom video. I am very disappointed with this new model which prevents me from viewing my library of films side by side. If you know of a way to watch movies side by side I will be very grateful to you.

Hi!
This is a native 4k or pixel shifting?
And what is the minimum distance for a 100 inches diagonal? I'm very interested in this
All of the current DLP projectors use pixel shifting for the 4k resolution. However they do it so well they are officially certified as 4K UHD and in picture comparison tests you can see the quality is right up there with the best. Plus Native 4K projectors are significantly more expensive. For the minimum distance it is about 3.5m for 100 inch diagonal. But there is a handy calculator on the Optoma website if you want to know the exact distance. Just go to the product page for the model you are looking at and there is a link.
Thank you◉‿◉
Does this have pure motion?
This model does not have pure motion as it introduces a lot of input lag and can't be completely switched off. Projectors with pure motion are often around 60ms input lag which is fine for movies but slow for gaming.
Thanks for the clarification, can you do a video of what movies look like on this projector? There is not much info to be found on this projector. Thanks!
Its pretty tough to do a video just about movies. Overall we would say that it performs as well as any other 4K DLP projector. As we mentioned it has better blacks and brightness than the UHD300X. If you havent had a projector at all then you wont be disappointed, that we can guarantee. :) However if you ONLY want it for movies then there may be options that will do that better, but they wont have the gaming abilities that this one has.
@@ScanComputers Like what? Which ones?
@@TheChefComic thats a vey open question... For movies only then any models that have the pure motion option will offer some benefits for motion especially in 24p movies and content. to enable 240Hz mode you need to have the enhanced gaming mode switched on and be running at 1080p. Then you should be able to switch to 240Hz in the windows menu or the nvidia control panel. Only a PC will support 240Hz at the moment.

also the remote is horrible. I have it on my higher-end UHD60, which does do 3D after a firmware update
UHD60 is a great projector. How have you found it? Regards the resolution there is no way to get faster than 4K 60Hz with current HDMI standards and projectors dont tend to support displayport as it doesnt work well over long runs. Bar the odd very expensive monitor this is also an issue for gaming monitors too. Also, there arent really any graphics cards capable of driving anything like 240fps in the latest games at 4K yet. We think overall its a good option to have both so you can choose depending on the game. oh, you might find you UHD60 does 1080p 120Hz after that update. half way there :)
@@ScanComputers I'd still take 1440p120 over 1080p any day, and HDMI 2.0 can carry that. Really no point in upgrading a projector until HDMI 2.1 is included, which can carry 4K120, and dual RTX 2080 TI can handle that on reduced-from-ultra settings. The upcoming RTX3080/TI will certainly handle it with greater ease. For now the UHD60 is sufficient, albeit blurry in higher paced action games
@@iamdmc Doubt we will ever see a 1440p projector as there wouldnt be enough interest for it. although it would be nice if Optoma could add the resolution as a compatible one in firmware. Projectors dont really suffer from blur issues when running non native resolutions like moitors do. would certainly be a welcome option so we will mention it to them :) In your case we would agree to stick with your UHD60 for now as overall its a significantly more expensive model than the UHD42. The good news is that the DLP tech should be able to handle 4k 120Hz from a technical perspective once the cable standards catch up we might see something come through. 15ms is way to long for response time. Decent monitors are need to be sub 5ms
Response time is not the whole story. Usually the monitor information only tells you the response time of a pixel change but not the input lag. The input lag is added on top and is typically about 40ms or higher. So 15ms for input lag is extremely good.
