In 1990, Vince McMahon and WWF were gearing up for their big Wrestlemania VI event at the Sky Dome in Tornoto, Canada. One of the marquee attractions would feature Rowdy Roddy Piper vs Bad News Brown.
This is the infamous match where Piper comes out dressed up in blackface, his entire body painted half black. It was a shocking moment even back in 1990 but how did both participants feel about it?
Did Piper & Bad News get along behind the scenes? Was Vince McMahon the one who proposed the idea or someone else? Both interviews were conducted in the early 2000s by RF Video.

I worked in the same security company as Allen Coage (Bad News Brown) here in Calgary back in the early 2000s. Got to meet him on a few occasions. Pretty nice guy, though not overly talkative.
I met Mr.Piper during wrestlemania 26, I was dining one night before and one table behind he was with his fanily and I ask him for a picture and he didn’t think twice to say yes, I will remember how nice and humble he was and a true gentleman! RIP

I remember this like it was yesterday..my father hated Wrestling and would give me shit when I was a kid for watching it...so Wrestlemania is a huge event and I’m watching it with friends and my Dad comes in...looks at the screen and goes “Why the fuck is that guy painted bald black?”

Yeah.but in other parts of this shoot he complains about not getting the belt and saying it had been promised to him. He gives a decent interview but he contradicts himself and is too quick to level personal attacks against other people in the business. I'd say that about 70 percent of what he says can be taken at face value. Piper on the other hand is usually trying not to say anything concrete and usually takes the high road on personal attacks.

what I don't get is piper said they dumped out the solution and replaced it with water as a joke. ok fine....why go through 2 weeks of crap to get the paint off and not just get another bottle or make another bottle of the solution that they had in the first place?
I can think of a few reasons. Piper probably didn't want to seem like a pussy and said fuck it, because of the rib. Maybe he asked for it and got turned down and was told to keep it that way for a story line and it never came to be. My money is on he is full of it. I don't want to jump on the race card like some do. I think he was a guy who tried hard to stay on top while pushing others down, like all who get to the top do. His antics might come across that way but I think he wanted more to come across as an asshole than racist. Now a days everything is racist rather than someone maybe being a flat out jerk. The problem with wrestlers is they are fishermen at heart, they all tell lies constantly.
I wonder how Bad News Brown would have worked in the NWA WCW. Bad News vs Ric Flair, Bad News vs Ricky Steamboat, vs Sting. I would have liked to have seen that.

Piper never wanted to put ppl over. Complained about putting Hogan over, complained about putting Mr.T over and may others.
He only wanted to put Bret Hart over and that’s it.
It was a different time. Back in his day you lost it affected the money you could make. Always seemed silly to me. Some of the biggest moments I remember for a lot of talent involved them losing and probably benefited them in the long run. People remember moments more than anything else and some of the biggest moments of guys careers result in loses. Hogan/Warrior, Hogan/Goldberg were both huge because Hogan lost. Lesnar greatly benefited from losing to Goldberg at Survivor Series since he had become too unbeatable. It made him interesting again.
Winning and losing was a lot different back in the 80s and prior. The top faces rarely lost except via dqs/count-outs unless they were losing a belt. Bruno/Morales/Backlund/Hogan/etc. Roddy had enough leverage as a top heel to have a similar privilege and never bothered with belts in the WWF outside of the IC belt and he put over Bret in that situation.
Once they started phasing out excessive jobber matches in the late 90s and companies had weekly episodic nationwide television, it became harder to do that and even Roddy lost matches later in his career in WCW more regularly.
He was great. Piper was also the only person Hogan never beat. Why should Piper take a loss from Bad News Brown. Everyone wanted to see Piper give him a hard time . Rowdy Roddy Piper will go down in history as one of the greatest the WWF WWE had

It’s not the first time I’ve heard one of the guys say Piper was a racist but whether that’s true or not that had to be the worst for Piper, especially if he was a racist
